Fountain Pens. People Of The Pen: My first time at a pen show.

  • I love using fountain pens. Why fountain pens? I had to know. I have three. One was made for me by a fan. Being that my goal is to improve my penmanship in 2019, going "full-on fountain pen" seemed like a reasonable thing. My favorite learning style has always been total immersion. I went to the show expecting to be there a couple hours, but fell down a deep rabbit hole. After I got there, I discovered something even more interesting than the fountain pen, it was the people of the pen. I only planned on taking pics and a few short vids for instagram. I ended up staying for several hours, seeing that I easily could've attended this for three full days. I haven't met people that were so eager to share their love of this hobby and business. What you are watching was a compilation of videos I edited in no particular order. The final edit produced a serendipitous, informative, humorous, inspiring, and poignant show. All by accident, or was it?

      We must be on the same wavelength at the moment. I subbed to your channel a few months ago...watched one video and would parachute in from time to time just to skim through a few more videos but then you come up again as I search for fountain pens...I recently bought one...and now here you are again.... starting the same journey I myself just recently embarked on...so interesting. Fountain pens are amazing...I bought my first for 25...now im looking to buy a more expensive one.

This documentary has opened a flood of fond memories of him, thanks George! This is also the second time i'm watching this and i have to say i think you've introduced me to a new hobby. I am already a DE razor hobbyist and i see many parallels to the fountain pen hobby.

    In my country, kids are encouraged to used fountain pens until they graduate school (grade 10), and from grade 11 every one seems to quit it for ballpoint because they are easy to find and cheap. I have fallen in that habit too. It has been a few years since I stopped using a fountain pen and think I need to get into it now. Will be buying a good fountain pen later this evening to write my journal.

    One of the most enjoyable videos that I've watched, in a very long time. You're absolutely correct, as you shared with your pipes. I have a few myself. My tobacco is Prince Albert. I have a few ebonite pens, nothing vintage, and hope to find one someday. My ink is Parker Quink. I feel like I'm in another time, and location, something as simple as writing in my journal, or a letter; pen in hand, and pipe in mouth, I am transported.

  • @Steelhorsecowboy
    @Steelhorsecowboy Před 5 lety +2

    I remember using a fountain pen and being fascinated by them as a kid in the 1960s. I haven't thought about them again until now. At the time cartridge pens were popular as well as ball point pens of course. The cartridge pen resembled a fountain pen but instead of having a rubber refillable bladder the had a replaceable plastic ink cartridge.
    Ralph Reyes passionately described finding a lifelong writing companion in a valued and cherished fountain pen. I think what was said that was most true was that writing with a fountain pen adds character and distinction to your writing. I also like old books and you often find inscriptions written with a fountain pen and it makes you dream about who and when and under what circumstances they were written. Thanks

    • @stephanfeinen3923
      @stephanfeinen3923 Před 5 lety +2

      A cartridge pen is also considered to be a fountain pen. It's just another way to fill it. Most modern fountain pens are cartridge pens. In most cases you can replace the cartridge with a "converter" which acts as a little piston, so you can use bottled ink which is much less expensive than cartridges but you also have a much larger selection of inks available.

    Bert! He’s been a friend to my uncle for many years. I bought my first Montblanc from Bert about 20 years ago when I was a young 19 year old Marine visiting for the weekend during a holiday. He inscribed my initials in the clip. Man did I think I was classy! Never had it occurred to me that writing with a good pen could be something more than just recording numbers and letters on paper. I don’t know how many times I’ve been asked why someone would spend so much money on a pen. All I do is hand them the pen I’m using, slide them a piece of paper, and tell them to sign their name. About 60% of the time they just get a surprised look, nod approvingly, and the conversation is over. It is then that they understand 🙂

    Great documentary George!
    I was bitten by the fountain pen bug a year ago, and now have 40 or so pens. There is an artistry, a craft, to manufacturing quality fountain (and dip) pens. My favorites are Lamy (German) and machined American-made pens from small manufacturers. Next step is investigating vintage pens. And yes, ink and paper are part of the whole culture. Good times.

    I picked up a fountain pen the other day(pilot metropolitan), and so far I really don't like it. It has a lot of friction, tugs on the page, stresses me out when it stops writing if I don't hold it correctly. When I'm drawing I'm trying to be loose, expressive, I'm constantly shifting the pen position, holding it in a fixed angle is not for me. Another thing that bothers me is that the tips can be easily damaged, I don't like having to worry about that, I'd rather have something cheap. My personal favorite pens right now are just some cheap stuff, crystal bic, dollar tree r-2 rollerball, and papermate flair medium felt tip.

    Back in my College days, the one thing that my Teachers always told me was how terrible my handwriting was.
    Due to being ambidextrous, where sometimes I'll have to change hand's when writing, due to my Brain deciding to switch sides, as well as having arthritis in my fingers, my hand writing wasn't exactly the best.
    But one Teacher told me "have you tried using a Fountain Pen? As due to the sensitivity of the Pen, you have no choice but to go careful, it's like taking the Training Wheels off your Bike for the first time", an I tried using a Fountain Pen, at first it was a big slopping mess, smudges everywhere, ink all over my hands, but just like playing an instrument, you begin to develop muscle memory, where you reach a point where your writing something down, an without even thinking about how your controlling the Pen, your handwriting is perfect.
    P.S. Sadly I got lazy, I needed to write down a number very quickly, I used a Ball Point Pen, I needed to make a shopping list (where I'd cross shit off at the store) I'd use a Ball Point Pen.
    But I really am now highly considering getting back into it, my Daughter is 5 years old, she has shit handwriting (she's 5) an I'm not too much of a role model when she looks at my writing.

    I truly liked this video.
    The people interviewed, like most people, say and/or spell their wed presence and/or web address too fast.
    When one speaks too fast, like in giving a phone number, the one receiving it generally is not able to understand it.
    If the receiver does not understand it, then one needs to rewind or ask again.
    So:
    When stating a web presence and/or web address, speak slowly and/or spell it slowly.
    And it would be a a nice addition to add the web presence and/or web address to the videos narrative below the Channel Name.
    Just my three cents worth of a thought.

    You saved the best to the last. Very talented and we got to see some pens in action Not just talk, talk,talk. I could tell that you weren’t into pens at that point.If you loved fountain pens as much as I do, chatting would have been secondary to browsing with the desire to buy. As far as smoking an old pipe, drop it before it smokes you! Obituaries never read ..”died from writing with a pen”. 🥴
