@TheBlackiwid dude, I'm very far away from computer science, so I mostly don't get what are trying to say and why did mentioned "histories of famous dead people". Floor could reach operatic style back in After Forever days, then she decided to explore this side of her vocal range and joined conservatory where she studied opera for one year l and then left. One year is not what's considered "full training", but "some training". Mostly, she developed her vocals by herself. As far as I know, the only education "from the side" she gained from conservatory (one year) and finishing musical theatre course in Rock Academy. That doesn't make her worse, in opposite, I think she's an exceptional singer who thoroughly explored her abilities and developed her own unique sound.

Odd choice for your second Nightwish experience. Nightwish has always been known for their operatic vocals, but that was a long time ago. Floor can perfectly well sing full opera style, but it’s not her favourite style. She prefers the more metal style, although she blends in opera from time to time. She uses it as one of the colors on her painting palette, to mix and create the vocal colors that the song needs, that’s how she describes it herself. A lot of Nightwish fans feel that there is not enough opera In the Nightwish songs, so they are all thrilled with this song which explains the hype about it. Having said that, I think you’d be better off reviewing their older material first, getting to know the band better in all their versatility, before starting the new album. Even for seasoned Nightwish fans the new album seems a little hard to digest at first listen. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great album, I just feel that it isn’t very well suitable for newcomers. No offence! 😉 Check out Ghost Love Score from their Wacken 2013 show, followed by Storytime, Romanticide, Song for myself and the other songs from that concert. Btw. Nightwish’s live performance are almost always preferred over their studio recordings. Nightwish is enjoyed best live. Have fun!

She is right, it really makes sense to know the Shoemaker story.. but actually the whole album should be listened as a whole since it tells a story in bigger picture. This song is about Shoemaker, but how it is related to humanity, to theme of the CD1? A LOT to digest there lyrically, poetwise, musicwise. Not made for 1 listen.

There could be no finer tribute to the legendary planetary geologist who said his greatest unfulfilled dream was to go to the

Tonight, the ashes of Eugene M. Shoemaker are to be launched in a memorial capsule aboard Lunar Prospector to the moon. The
polycarbonate capsule, one-and-three-quarters inches long and seventh-tenths inch in diameter, is carried in a vacuum-sealed,

Around the capsule is wrapped a piece of brass foil inscribed with an image of a Comet Hale-Bopp, an image of Meteor Crater in
northern Arizona, and a passage from William Shakespeare's enduring love story, "Romeo and Juliet":
    And, when he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine

I think you guys are very quick to pick up stuff from their songs and describe them in a way that actually makes sense. Having listened Nightwish for 20 years and still I learn and get new ideas from your observations. I've listened to this song a ton of times already (one of my personal favourites from their new album) and I never considered the build up being from a singular storyteller to another and end up in a choir - as in a crowd. But it makes perfect sense to me, considering how Eugene Shoemakers story started from his own observations and ideas which eventually turned into science that is now continued by others (the crowd/choir) after his passing. And then the orchestral part and the operatic vocals at the end praising to the stars as his earthly remains are lifted to eternal rest in the celestial realm. Really enjoyed all of your Nightwish reactions, keep them coming!
I hope you guys check Ghost Love Score and Romanticide live from Wacken 2013. They are both amazing songs in their own way and the band is pure gold live. If you want some heavier stuff, I think Brad would really enjoy Yours Is An Empty Hope live from Wembley!

Alena said something insightful about the lyrics being partially about the "dreamers" of our society. It's those "dreamers" that often end up being just like Shoemaker, Albert Einstein or Tuomas Holopainen. One of the most wonderful things about us humans is our ability to imagine. With that we are able to create something new, which might even end up being revolutionary.

Laudato Si is Latin for "Praise be", and as you said "ad astra" literally means "to the stars", though there are a few bits of additional meaning there.
"Ad astra" traditionally carried a connotation of the impossible, or taking something to an infinite degree. The phrase originated from Virgil, who wrote "sic itur ad astra" which means "thus one journeys to the stars", from Aeneid spoken by Apollo to Aeneas's young son Julus) and "opta ardua pennis astra sequi" which means "desire to pursue the high (or hard to reach) stars on wings" spoken by Aeneas to his foe Turnus in their combat). Another origin is Seneca the Younger, who wrote "non est ad astra mollis e terris via" which means "there is no easy way from the earth to the stars". The memorial for the disastrously destroyed Apollo 1 mission in which all three astronauts buirned to death while still on the pad was "ad astra per aspera" meaning "to the stars through hardship".
"Laudato Si" is also repeated in a famous song (The Canticle of the Sun) by St. Francis of Assissi as he calls for the praise of the natural world in various guises, as wind, water, fire, the Sun, the stars, and even death, with the most notable line for this song being:
Laudato si, mi Signore, per sora Luna e le stelle:
in celu l'ài formate clarite et pretiose et belle.
Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful.
The members of the band are not religious but they wanted to capture a religious reverence for the greatness of Shoemaker's legacy and the grandeur of the universe. For what it is worth, the same attitude can be found in spades in the Nightwish song "The Greatest Show on Earth".

I really enjoyed this. I am happy that Alena is liking Nightwish. Nightwish songs always take you on a journey. Between the music and Floor's voice they brings the emotion out. Tuomas is an amazing composer. Brad great job on the lyrics. I am getting the feeling you like the harder metal. Nightwish has that too. I would suggest you listen more songs before doing more of the new one. You will get a better sense of Nightwish. But it is up to you. This is your channel. I really like how you are doing your channel. And I appreciate the work you have to do. Take care and stay safe.

Just stumbled across your channel. I really like your reactions and your thoughts or comments to the songs. In this video your girlfriend makes the wiser comments, so she should wear the Geek-Shirt next time :-)
You should also keep reacting to the "older" live stuff. Even if the girl (sorry, I didn't hear your name properly) know some Tarja-versions of them. Floor add always something own and unique to the songs. Here some recommendations:
    Storytime (live at Wacken)
    Ever Dream (live at Wacken)
Your Is An Empty Hope (live at Wembley)
    My Walden (live at Tampere)
Shudder Before The Beautiful (live at Wembley)
I Want My Tears Back (live at Wacken)
    Sahara (live at Tampa)
Dead Boy's Poem (live at Buenos Aires)

I would recomment, that you stay with the older live stuff first. Because the new album is complicated, even for experienced NW Fans. It will be easier for you to get into it with the Songs from Wacken and the other live shows. ( they will be suggested to you massively, don`t worry). For Brad would be "Romanticide"--live at Wacken, or " Yours is an empty hope" live from Nightwish cruise very attractive. They are straight and heavy.

  • @bkeyser

Nightwish lyrics tend to be very thematic. Often there are stories being told that are not immediately evident through the literal reading of the words, not unlike most poetry. If you prefer not to get backstory before a Nightwish reaction, having it pulled up and discussing after might add some clarity for certain songs. If you continue this Nightwish journey, there will be certain songs recommended that will come with additional recommendations to read the backstory before watching. It would be wise to do so for those, and you'll know which ones they are by the preponderance of the comments. Enjoy. Stay well.

Greetings from Finland. The t-shirt was spot on as Tuomas Holopainen (Nightwish's keyboardist & principal composer) is a natural sciences geek for sure. Both him & their current female vocalist Floor Jansen as children wanted to become biologists , but I for one am glad that it didn't happen. Although Floor Jansen has extensive vocals training, she studied musical theater & opera part-time for two years, so she is not a classically trained vocalist like Tarja Turunen (Nightwish's 1st femalke lead vocalist) has. However, as far as I'm concerned, Floor could also sing opera full time if she wanted to, like e.g. this aria: Floor Jansen - Puccini: O mio babbino caro - De Tiende van Tijl czcams.com/video/UeTyAZtV5wI/video.html

And hey, Brad, that girl you do the reactions with is pretty cool. You should think about hooking up with her. She's a keeper. At ease, soldiers. That is all. PS: She says her name like "Alona" but above it's spelled "Alena". Also, Floor had some classical training, but not operatic training per se.

This is a very artistic Ode to Eugene Shoemaker. Eugene had some of his ashes deposited on the moon, thus the ending showing the moon with the sun setting. Eugene's wife decided to inscribe the Shakespeare quote on the capsule that held Eugene's ashes that were deposited on the moon. Laudato si' (English: Praise Be to You!) is the second encyclical of Pope Francis. The encyclical has the subtitle "on care for our common home". AD Astra "To the stars".Floor has had some operatic training and you can hear her on performances of "O Mio Bambino Caro" and "Vilja Lied" live from the Dutch TV show Beste Zangers. See link. czcams.com/video/lcLG5X1i2QM/video.html Vilja Lied - An aria from The Merry Widow - Done in Floor's style. Great reaction video from both of you. As you can see from this song most of the new CD is done using complex musical patterns and styles in a very artistic way. However there are still some very heavy songs. See you both next time. Be well.

Very nice reaction. I enjoyed the commentary very much. Shoemaker’s ashes are actually interred on the moon, which explains some of the lyrics. The greatest thing about Nightwish is that it is it’s own genre. They can deliver hard, soft and everything in between. No other band is like it. No other band has Floor. Props To Tuomas for composing this work of art. He is the Hans Zimmer of the Metal world. Brad, when you get to Tribal I believe you will like it...a lot. Alena you will like everything being a woman of discerning tastes. 😄🤘
