    Looks great so far man! I love the point you make about the retaining pins/blocks, I’ve seen so many fail for saving a few extra minutes. I mainly use the versa lok with the pins, taught my guy to build it right from the beginning, and that warranty hardly ever comes into play. Btw, Im the guy that said hey at the show the other afternoon, it was great to meet you and watch you guys build. Keep up the great work man 👍🏻

    That’s a great video Kyle like the demonstration on the block not only do the mechanical means hold the wall together plus the three-quarter gravel locking. Everything together is a great component along with the Geo grid.
    This is why we stress to the client that a retaining wall needs to be installed properly by qualified installers

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks man, I hear to often from others in the industry that those tabs are useless... I'm glad I was able to demonstrate how helpful they are. You are completely right about walls needing to be done properly. every stage, properly. You never want to go with the lowest bidder for large retaining walls that will hold pressure. You will end up paying twice when it fails. Thanks for the comment brother! ✌

  • @rodcoslett173
    @rodcoslett173 Před 3 měsíci +1

    Curious why you are glueing the blocks. I wouldn't think you need the glue. You have the holding blocks and the gravel infill in the blocks are plenty to hold the blocks in place. We also don't use geo-fab up the back of the wall either. Acts like a water dam and can push the wall over. Your projects always come out nice!!!

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Před 3 měsíci

      The glue is just an additional measure that is not necessary but definitely helpful. Plus it helps the blocks sit on each other better. After a few rows, the inconsistency in the blocks can make them wobble a little... Putting a bead of glue prevents that wobble and keeps the rows flatter as you build. And the fabric behind the wall is the most important thing in my opinion. If you do not put it, the soil will slowly migrate into all the drainage stone. Then when water gets in it and freezes, the clean stone no longer has open voids for the molecules to expand into. So it pushes the material apart and in return puts pressure on the wall. I know what you are saying about the water behind the fabric, But it would have to be an insanely heavy flow of water to effect the wall. And in a situation like that, you should have additional drainage measures set up. In this situation, the existing timber walls were still holding the grade no problem and there was no sign of drainage issues before, even with no drainage stone behind the wall. Now with the new wall and a lot of drainage stone, they will have even less of a chance for water issues. ✌

    Those jackson wheel barrows are legit. Love them. If your by yourself and need to move 2 wheel barrows. Shove one in the handles and tilt it up so the lip of it catches on the one your coming into behind. Then when you tilt it it will lift up the first wheelbarrow allowing you to push both at the same time with one completley in the air.... Blew my mind the first time i saw someone do it

    Do you suggest the 1/4 clean bedding stone for any paver application regardless of area? I’m in Arizona and we have a very hard clay subsoil. Everyone around here uses 1/4minus. Excavate out about 2-3” below paver and use 1/4 minus for the whole base (base and bedding). I’m about to attempt my first paver install and want to do it right. Great videos btw. Super useful information.

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Před 3 měsíci

      I do recommend clean crushed stone over dense grade gravel for sure. Not having to deal with freeze / thaw climates like here, you certainly do not have to worry about a deep base but having a few inches of clean stone under your pavers will allow proper drainage, even with clay sub soil. Good luck with your project!

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you and that sounds like an awesome project! My initial quotes are estimates based off the best measurements I can get during the estimate walk through. On projects like this, I never give a definite price. It is always subject to change a little depending on what happens during the install. So if it comes to me needing to add another row of block that is not included in my estimate, I would then approach the customers and tell them the situation. But that doesn't happen often...

    Your a big inspiration man. Maybe its in one of your older videos and i will have to do some digging. I thought i would just ask how you got started? How many years did you work at another company before doing your own thing? Did you work at landscape companies or hardscapes? I notice you dont mess to much with the irrigation? I kinda do a little bit of everything. Wanting to get more into hardscapes. I know irrigation very well for my area and it doesnt take much to create a lil kit to move/reroute lines from hardscape installs. Could be added money for you in the future. Maybe one day you can do a lil video about your work history. The knowledge you gained before going out on your own. What made you finally pull the trigger. Stuff like that! Love the work you do. Found your channel just about the same time i started running the mini X more and more. Even to dig up main/drains or big commerical mainline repairs. Also to excavate for hardscapes. Keep it up buddy! Learning alot from you about open grade bases have really opened up my mind. In my area literally no one is doing it i think because we are in the high desert so no one is to concerned about drainage but it seems to be more solid system overall with the lack of weeds. We do get alot of freeze/thaw cycles but not alot of rainfall. About 8 inches per year

    • @lukemarks92
      @lukemarks92 Před 3 měsíci

      Lack of weeds/ants! Big selling point in my area. Those ants are crazy out here in dense grade bases. Polymeric sand keeps them at bay for maybe a season or 2 at tops but they are everywhere

      I'm glad to hear it brother, that was a big goal when I started the channel. Inspiring DIY homeowners and other guys trying to get into the trade, I love feedback like this!
      So I started landscaping when I was a teenager on school vacations / summer vacations for my Uncles company. I dropped out of high school in my 2nd sophomore year...LOL Started working full time with Cousin who then took over my Uncles company. We did a lot of landscape maintenance but also started getting into hardscaping. We both started shifting more towards that as the years went by. That was from 2006-2012. Then I actually moved on and got a job a big landscape company where I ran mowing / maintenance crews for a few years 2012-2015. Then I made a switch to landscape construction / hardscaping at that same company from 2015 -2017 and learned a ton from the guys I worked with. Then in 2017 I left that company to go to another big company with a better opportunity doing all hardscaping from 2017-2019. I had a blast there and met some great people. That is the company I still plow for. In 2019, My Grandmother started having problems so I went back to work with my cousin to help because my Uncle needed to help my Grandmother. Had some awesome years there given the circumstances. And the last year I worked there in 2021 is when I started filming job videos. Then I established my business in 2022 and been on my own since! SO it took many years of gaining knowledge and experience before pulling the trigger but I'm happy I was patient. If I tried any sooner, it may not have ended well... Sorry for the book I wrote but I hope it explains it!
      And I recommend getting into the open grade base, it will set you apart and your product will out last the competitors. Thanks for the feedback, God Bless! ✌

Iv been apart of some good jobs and good crews. And been apart of some terrible jobs and crews haha as i get older i find i cant stand to do shotty work or rip off clients like iv seen countless times in the industry. Thats why i like how you approach jobs and your craft. Ill keep learning from the channel. Meanwhile i hope to see you reroute some of those irrigation lines next time and make that EASY MONEY lol We dont do alot of hardscapes at my current company. Maybe 4 or 5 a year. Mostly irrigation/planting trees/placing boulders/moving dirt. Etc. I might work for a hardscape company next to try and master it more before taking the leap to be out on my own. I have done some pretty good installs with the traditional base. Ill keep ya updated when i get to try out open grade. Hopefully this year at some point. Keep on keeping on with the goodwork you and your crew does.

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Před 3 měsíci

      I built a wall that was between 5-8' for a patio back in 2019. But I typically build walls 4' or lower to stay away from permits and engineered plans. So when I have a big grade change I usually recommend multiple tiers like this situation exactly.

  • @Max_Persic
    @Max_Persic Před 3 měsíci

    Hey, Kyle, I’ve been watching your vids for a while. Love all the videos. My only concern with the geo grid is that, shouldn’t it extend to the soil too? I can’t speak from experience but we strictly use techo bloc products and have been to a showcase and they show that it’s important to extend into not only the 57, but also into the reinforced soil. I’m still learning and gaining as much experience as possible, so don’t think I’m dissing, I’m just genuinely curious.

    • @Treehandler
      @Treehandler Před 3 měsíci +3

      You wouldn’t be able to separate the soil and clean stone with the fabric if you extended the Geogrid into the soil. The clean stone staying clean is much more important than the geogrid. The most common failures are from the hydrostatic pressure and expansion caused by the backfill not being a clean and well draining material as well as the blocks not being able to properly dry after rain and snow events.
      Seen many of them lean over to the point of failure but also the blocks disintegrate after 30 years of being in contact with wet soil rather than clean stone.
      So in my opinion from my experience, I would much rather have the fabric separating the soil and clean stone than having the geogrid extending back and disrupting that

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I could not have responded better myself. Right on the money with the explanation. Keeping the stone clean is the most important part. These manufacturers push many different methods and building techniques all based on different circumstances. For me, any block wall under 4' will be completely fine with geogrid only going into the backfill stone. And no feelings hurt here man, doing your research is not a bad thing. Some large walls require grid going into the soil per engineered plans. At that point, you follow the plans exactly how they are drawn up. ✌
