  • Fall foliage in the White Mountains peaks in early October. By the second weekend in October, Crawford Notch is filled with red, orange, and yellow.
The Conway Scenic Railroad operates daily excursion service to Fabyan in Bretton Woods during peak foliage on their ‘Mountaineer’ or ‘Notch Train’. These excursions head north from North Conway passing through the towns of Intervale, Glen, Bartlett & Harts Location. A stop over at Crawford Notch gives passengers a chance to stretch their legs and have a look around the area.
The train operates over the former Maine Central Railroad’s ‘Mountain Divison’ starting in Portland, ME and ending in St. Johnsbury, VT.
The power for the Notch Train is Ex-Maine Central / Guilford GP-38 252 built in November 1966 and Ex-Norfolk & Western / Guilford GP-35 216 built in March 1965. Both units are painted in the Maine Central ‘Yellowbird’ paint scheme replicating the locomotives that once ran through the notch.
The consist for the Notch Train goes as follows. 4735 ‘Rhonda Lee’ Ex-CB&Q dome car used as a first class dining car. 310 ‘Leslie Ann’ Ex-Orford Express dome car used as a luxury dining car and is the railroad’s newest acquisition. 492 ‘Hattie Evans’ Ex-Norfolk & Western used as a dining car. 3234 ‘Carroll P. Reed’ Ex-Canadian National used as a first class car. 6749 ‘Mount Webster’ Ex-Canadian National used as a table coach. 6739 ‘Mount Bemis’ , 6745 ‘George B. Small’ , 6743 ‘Mount Willey’ all Ex-Canadian National and used as coach cars. Finally is the 3202 ‘Hurricane Mountain’ Ex-Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western used as a coach.
Thank you to Merrimack & Saco Productions as always.
    Thanks for watching!

I'm just a wee late in getting to this video, but it was so worth the wait. Simply awesome. Thank you. My sister hates yellow, she is much younger than I am, so she cannot understand my love of the color, especially when paired with green. But I grew up on the MEC, and I can't get enough.

I am unsure about their plans with the rest of the mountain division. Last I heard there was a plan to make it into a railtrail.

Could you share the camera positions to film these spectacular footages? I only know it's Conway Railroad, but I can barely find good positions to shot

Hello! At 3:53 was Frankenstein trestle and 12:51 was Willey Brook. I shot this video over several days but they made the same trip between North Conway and Fabyan
