  • Joy of Living subscribers now have the exclusive opportunity to participate in regular live Community Circle interactive sessions with Tergar instructor Tim Olmsted. We've already started and this is an excerpt from our last session. Come and join us at joy.tergar.org/
These Community Circle sessions create an open and relaxed environment where subscribers can share their meditation experiences and gain insights from the questions and perspectives of fellow practitioners.
Tim Olmsted has been a student and teacher of meditation for the past four decades. For 12 of those years, he lived in Nepal, working as a psychotherapist serving the international community. There, Tim studied with many of the greatest meditation teachers of our time, including Mingyur Rinpoche’s father, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche. He is very much looking forward to being with Joy of Living subscribers during these Community Circle sessions!

After a nice long happy life some changes occurred last year and at the age of 65 I am now faced with anxiety. My question is how can I meditate on my anxiety?

Carole, when you are meditating if there are symptoms of anxiety just gently rest your awareness on those symptoms. This will cause the components of the whole feeling you know as anxiety to reveal themselves; gently rest your awareness on each component and it will resolve itself in time. When you feel anxious, does your heart beat fast? Let that be the object of your awareness. Does your stomach feel knotted and tight? Meditate on that. Do you feel fear? Meditate on that. Go through the various parts of your anxiety and meditate on each, however long it takes, and ease will come. I recently did this with my lifelong feelings of chronic depression and after six days of meditating on it off and on I was free of it, mostly. It recurs from time to time in a much gentler fashion I'm easily able to dissolve with a meditation or two. I hope this helps you, it helped me tremendously.
