He's beyond exceptional for Ireland so it would be massive if Josh and Andy were able to help get Ireland into a first ever world cup semifinal appearance this autumn.
Win the WC, anything less would be failure...
He's scored 8 tries this season already(7 for Leinster) and 5 International tries last season. Excellent stats for a player in his position.
Has a surprisingly crisp pass on him, sometimes gives it from the base of a ruck or maul and you wouldn't be surprised if it was actually a scrumhalf throwing it
Funny you say that because when he first played rugby he was a back and played scrumhalf in the sct cup
Probably the best response to getting dropped I've ever seen. He was told to go improve parts of his game and he improved so much that he won World Player of the Year. Farrell should drop him again, and tell him to improve at winning turnovers, then he'll be complete.
To be fair he’s a decent jackle threat, the entire pack for Leinster and Ireland are
Great analysis, proof is in the pudding 😊 Let’s go Ireland, 6N winners this year 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Great video.
Josh is a very honest, decent and hard working chap. His work ethic is what has brought him to where he is at the moment. He is not afraid to put in the effort on and off the field to progress. The improvements in his carrying and other aspects of his game took hours upon hours of boring analysis, learning, practicing, practicing and more practicing. He had the desire and the patience and work ethic to make it happen. He deserves all of the credit that he receiving. Keith Earles did something similar, he was told that he needed to go away and work on his game and improve in key areas and he took it on the chin, went away, worked his @ss off and came back a better player.
Hopefully, JVDF can stay fit and have a create WC.
Great player, great concept for a video, great stats and great graphs. Thank you
My pleasure!
This is a great breakdown using the stats to zero in on a specific player and their importance to a team 👍🏻😀
WILL CONNORS is why he got better! Said it himself!
Finally someone took the time to do a video on JVF..appreciate it...he is a revelation in Ireland and I hear one of the nicest guys in Rugby.
Yeah man seems like a top bloke and a top player!
Really enjoyed this video over morning coffee. A similar one for Dupont would be inteteresting too.
Actually yeah Dupont would be really interesting!
Dupont it has to be said has been consistently excellent the last few years, it would probably have to be a career analysis to get an accurate view
As Leinster supporter we obviously love Josh . However , he may never have received a guaranteed starting slot for Leinster ( never mind Ireland ) if it was not for injury ( and forced early retirement ) of Dan Leavy and then, the long term injury to the great Will Connors ( who is just about to come back to play ) .
Funny the way the door opens sometimes .
Dan Leavy retired? what a shame. i remember thinking of him as one of the greatest irish players
@@THEMRblackboy7thst he is/was . Long term injury and advised by doctors to retire . Also Will Connors with almost 2 years of injury has his issues as well . JVDF is like the Duracell bunny and just keeps going
Poor auld Dan. What a player.
This is such a good idea. Please do more!
Without looking at any stats, I'd say it's the try scoring...
Ok, so watched the video. All the stats add up to huge improvements... Class!
Thanks for doing the research. Great video.
Always love seeing the performances validated by the numbers bro 😁
@@TwoCentsRugby are you coming to France for the World Cup? I'm Irish, but live in the US, I'll be heading over for the WC.
Sadly not man, but the next one is on my list 😅
Morning coffee and this video .. cheers Mark
Morning! Mate! Hope the sun is shining ☕
Yeh, very clear exposition - the number don't lie. VDF takes off in 2021 and, for the national team, everything goes back to that game v England which they won in March 2021 (32 -18). From that point they have almost been a different side and have carried on getting startling results (through all of the 2021 Autumn Series, record away win v England in 6N, then the famous away series win in New Zealand etc.) Ireland show no sign of peaking - instead, they give every indication that they are getting better. Look at Doris's recent form for Leinster - I think he has learned something from VDF's improvement and he should show up very well in the 6N. I imagine the stats for many other members of the Ireland team would show this pattern of 'taking off' in 2021.
5 years ago if someone had told me JDFV will win WPOTY i'd have laughed at them and said he won't even hold down a place at international level! The man deserves the highest praise for the work he's put in.
Yeah man 5 years ago I would have said he's a good player - but WPOTY? Not even close. He's done amazing
Good analysis. Josh is an exceptional player with a great back story which is translated into his work rate and commitment. I’m convinced that This guy, (along with Sheehan and Doris in particular) could be the difference for Ireland when it comes to the RWC
Classic 2c quality here. Thanks Mark !
Most welcome mate!
I never thought he has this current level in him. He’s exceeded all expectations I had. His strength and work rate seem immense at present
He is the Madonna of rugby, totally reinvented himself and nobody saw it coming. When we lost Dan Leavy it was horrible then a year later we have JDVF doing an amazing job. No SOB, or Leavy left our back row a bit toothless, Josh Murphy looked decent but never really got a proper run of games at 6. It's the post contact meters that JVDF gets that are so impressive imho.
I have never seen a player turn a weakness into a strength so quickly or successfully. He was told to go away and work on his average to middling carrying, then came back as maybe Irelands best ball carrier? How? And why is whatever he did not mandatory for every player in Ireland?
Think he still way go as Ireland best ball carrier think Dorris or could even argue shhenan is better but definitely massive improvement
@@deanflynn3745 Doris is the better carrier, as he gets those extra metres through contact, Sheehan is probably the most athletic runner where he wouldn’t be out of place on the wing, I reckon VDF is probably the best combination of those attributes
Please do the same for Eben Etzebeth, Just for a comparison. Probably not as much improvement, but lets see how he did in the stats in 2022.
Thanks!
Cheers man!
Josh has to be the most improved player in the world.
The most consistent openside flanker in world rugby for the past 5/6 years. The man can do it all. His weakest area was his attack but now that’s one of his best areas. Always beats the first defender. Goes 80+ minutes every game for Leinster & Ireland.
It’s a real shame Dan Leavy had to retire though as that 7 position was his. Leavy would’ve been the best of them all if it wasn’t for that horrible leg injury. Not taking anything away from VDF though. He’s world class. Leinster just know how to bring through quality openside a. Seán O’Brien, Dan Leavy, Josh Van Der Flier, Will Connors & now Scott Penny.
Yeah man sometimes that's just the way it works aye, awful for Leavy but a chance for JVDF well taken
Funny how depth varies over time. Sean O’Brien moved from 6 to 7 as we had no natural 7 to replace David Wallace and we had Ferris at 6. Now in addition to those mentioned we have Timoney and Hodnett. Wish we had a similar depth at prop and 15.
You know what could be ringrose player off the year this year he is some form early i know but he has improved so much dorris beirne improving as well and porter sheehan never had so many irish players in such great form
Yeah man very true - Ringrose has been on fire for what seems like an age
I cannot remember a first choice Irish openside who actually specialised in the breakdown. Before Van Der Flier there were O’Brien and Wallace, who were outstanding ball carriers but not breakdown specialists, but it did not really matter as there were other players like O’Driscoll, O’Connell and O’Mahony who were as good in the breakdown as anyone. For me Van Der Flier is more of a defensive player and plays more like a blindside, with O’Mahony and Beirne making most of the turnovers. Still, he is great player though and deserves his award.
Keith glesson was the last ground hog irish number 7
I don't think Timoney has ever been a threat to JvdF; Connors, on the other hand, certainly was a threat until injuries removed him from the scene. It isn't a coincidence that the dynamic improvement was under Farrell's more aggressively fluid attacking philosophy
Dan Leavy was and would have been the number 1 if injury hadn’t ended his career. I think he would have been the best back row player in the world. He was exceptional.
Are they just Irl stats or Leinster 2C?
Just Ireland stats
This video appears to have been published privately or something? It’s not on your full list of videos and is instead buried in the “playlists” tab.
Yeah it's up early for Patreon, it'll publish shortly 😅
Did changing the coaching ticket help players like this?
Yeah man could well be - apparently Farrell is the one who told him what he needed to do
I think he gets a lot of competition from Ardie Savea for effective work rate.
From the top of my head I'd say Savea probably gets more offensive work done but JVDF defensive - I'd have to check the numbers though - either way both bloody good!
The REAL question is: how does Eben Etzebeth manage to stay the best in the world since 2017
Aw, there's only room for one question, what a shame. Close down the channel mark, nothing else to discuss.
Ah the real question is about SA in a video that has nothing to do with SA according to the CZcams Saffa contingent. That's a real shocker!
Why must I stay on topic? Why? World Rugby deliberately don't consider Eben and Ardie Savea as candidates for world player of the year, even though ALL could see who performed at the highest level.
I am not taking away anything from discussing Josh. I just made a side statement. You don't have to comment here, do you?
@@sbok9481 "Why must I stay on topic? Why?"
Apologies, my bad. I didn't know you are new to what's called a "discussion".
You know Lukhanyo Am was nominated? Most nominees usually come from the better teams, that's what probably kept Eben and Ardie out in '22.

I'm gonna send you random videos of people's selections. See how many actually thinks Josh is the best. He is not even in some of the teams for 2022.
We all know World Rugby is not functioning properly, according to everyone. The new tackle rule is evidence. So, let's not take WR nominations into account because they have their own agendas.
Funny how it goes.. if Dan Levy never got that injury, Josh may never have become the player he is now. Dan was the man before his injury.
Jaysus vdf made a victory out of feedback
Haha indeed bro
He no vermullan in size but hes a tough as nails no forward in world rugby works as hard as him. and his go forward is of the scales for one of the smallest forwards in rugby
6’1. 17 stone isn’t small by any means. Lots of other forwards out there smaller than him.
I heard he improved his ball carrying
Yeah apparently bro!
He's done South Africa proud
Especially His recent try against south Africa, when Ireland won ! See you at the world Cup ;)
@@christianmccann9400 hopefully he'll do is proud by making it past the quarters
He's from Ireland, his grandad was Dutch.
@@JL-ti3us I know buddy, it's a running joke
He's a credit to his family, i went to school with his older brother in Durban, sound fella
When you add tries to your game people sit up and take notice.
100%
Not sure the guy deserves 11 minutes, but hey
