I’m on my second BMW R1200RT and I love it. My brother rides an FJR and we sometimes trade bikes. I can tell you, the FJR is the only bike I’d consider leaving the Beemer for. It’s smoother, has more power and burns regular fuel. I’d miss a few things about the BMW for sure.

Been riding since the age of 16yrs firstly in the UK, then for the last 40yrs in Western Australia, had some great bikes during that time, but having owned a 2003 & a 2009 FJR1300, both from new, they would have to be at the top of my list for greatness.
Incredible all round motorcycles, unfortunately due to reaching the grand old age of 72yrs I had to part with the later model & now riding a 2020 Speed Twin, this does most things well, but will never forget the enjoyment I received when riding my FJRs.

Nice review and nice video shots. I smiled to my self when you mentioned the hard to read speedo, my BMWf800R is so bad that I've put little white markers on the clock at 30mph and 70mph, but then I am approaching 70 (that would be years old not mph!)

  • @RoadcraftNottingham
    @RoadcraftNottingham Před 3 lety +21

Regarding the fuel gauge, just do what us oldies used to do and reset your trip at every fill up. You can buy bifocal adjustable eye protection so you can see the speedo and sat nav if applicable. Agreed on the amount of gears, we're that used to changing gear early, we notice it when we get to higher speeds. If it had 8 gears we'd be looking for the 9th. Very professional review, thanks.

    I've owned two fjr1300's ('05 and '06).
Fabulous machines to say the least.
When I got my first i discovered that when fueling the bike MUST be in the upright position preferably on the center stand... NOT leaning on the sidestand.
This will insure a proper CONSISTANT fill up every time.
The difference amounts to almost three quarters of a gallon.
Be safe, enjoy your ride and keep the shiny side up.

I've only ever had the Honda CTX700 (manual with fairing). For a single rider commuting to work, crossing 1000 miles, or zipping across town to pickup carry-out dinner it is a MARVELOUS way to move about, and uses only 3.6 L/100km
in the city! I'm only out looking about because my darling wife will not (and should not) put up with the miserable shock on the CTX700 that can't handle our 180 kg together.

Cheers on an exciting review! I own an R1 on which I replaced the stock clipons for 4-inch high Apex clipons that I placed above the triple clamp giving me an actual rise of 5 inches and the ride has never been better (I am a young 61). Gone are the motorcycle top-heavy and body back-aching feelings. Yamaha has been making engines for car manufacturers including American for years for a good reason. Now I have a cruising R1 pocket rocket complete with Riding Tribe passenger seat bag similar to yours. Safe riding.

Smooth, powerful enough, nice motor sound, soooo easy to work on. easy shift clicks up or down. For me, 6'4" I could not get comfortable for long rides. Had to sell it. A truly outstanding bike; I have an 09 in nearly perfect condition. I would suggest adding auxiliary lights (I use Denalis) so you can establish a better view of yourself to oncoming drivers; it's called the triangle effect. Also, I was not in love with the horn or muffler so I installed a Dinali Soundblast horn and switched to a Beowulf carbon fiber muffler system. I hope you enjoy your bike as much as I've enjoyed mine and be safe out there.

Ridden and managed nearly 20 FJRs. 1 x Gen 2 and the rest Gen 3.
Great bike in many ways. Very reliable over 60k miles each.Fantastic mile muncher.
It is heavy to manhandle, can eat rear pads as caliper under slung, get filled with crud and rear shocks can go around 40K miles. Seat is firm, standard screen too small. Speedo on G3 reads nearly 10% fast.
There is very little difference between 5 speed and 6 speed. Top is around 1mph longer. The 5th speed is already longer than most of it's contemporaries, ST1300, RT1200 and Trophy 1215 and some more recent models.
At 6'2" it can be cramped in the leg after a few hours.
Standard BT23s last well for such a heavy/powerful bike 9K on back quite often. Front handling susceptible to uneven front tyre wear, especially when dual compound centre starts forming a ridge.
It isn't nimble enough for me and there are more comfortable, equally pleasurable 4 cylinder bikes out there. Sadly they don't have shafts.

Just got a smokin deal on an low mileage 08 AE. No clutch on a bike feels lame at first but the super quick hand shifting is growing on me. Very neutral, stable geometry and turns in well if you know how to countersteer. The pegs are in a sporty position, right under you almost like it has rearsets.

I did multiple changes so my 2016 ES to make it " Fit me like a glove!" First was handle bar risers, next I lowered the seat to the maximum by removing the plastic seat frame, gaining an extra 3/4". I'm 6'-1" tall. Next I trimmed the foam on the front seat, added a heat pad front and back seats and re-uplostered both seats with marine vinyl upholstery. Changed the straight pegs to mini floorboards ( now I don't ever have a pressure point on my insole) . Those were the main changes to be comfortable while riding long distance. Added front and rear crash guards, dash cameras front and rear facing ( so I can have evidence of the asshole that killed me!) Instated delkevic 14" slash cut cans a few days ago. Now it's heard and sounds fantastic. I've also added a powered phone holder, Tom Tom rider gps, drink holder, trunk bracket on the top box and multiple ram mounts. The taller wind screen. All of these additions were either for comfort or convenience. It takes a while to get your machine to where is completely functional for long distance riding. I also have an air hawk seat cushion. No matter how comfortable your seat feels, after three or four hours riding, your ass starts to ache. Air hawk solves that problem. I still have items to complete! Signal cancel, brake light flasher and fog lights. Now I'm happy with it! 😃👍💓

Ive got a couple of FJR 1300 ( 2005 & 2008 ) Ive spent up to 17 hours in the saddle . My tip is to stand on the pegs get your bum of the seat every 1/2 hour for say 1 minute .It is the position of your knees and hip that causes it . If you want better seat , try that first , then if that doesn't work get a sheepskin for it and you can add an air hawk if you like . Fatigue is a problem within long distance . Here are some more tips , move head around every 15-30 minutes not just your eyes , flex you feet , toes and hands every 15-30 minutes . roll your shoulders occasionally . You may also like to try a good kidney belt for long distance rides .

I bought a 2019 FJR. Great bike. I installed a Corbin seat and a VStream windshield, both very worthwhile improvements. My speedometer reads roughly 10% high. That might save you some speeding fines but it is annoying to have to mentally compensate for that. I use a Garmin GPS all of the time so I can see my actual speed. 13000 kms now and getting new tires installed before the bike goes into storage for the winter. Cheers from Canada!

Forgive the presumption, but you could dramatically improve your view through those rural corners by positioning. Generally into the left for a RH bend, to the right for a LH. That said, always give up position for safety, say on a blind LH or if you see an HGV coming your way.
