- Introduced by Dimitri Chamblas’ choreographies and the harmonies of singer Obree Daman and his choralists, the 2022/23 Métiers d'art CHANEL - DAKAR show was held against the majestic backdrop of Dakar’s former Palais de Justice, with its rhythmic columns and sunlit inner garden. The collection celebrates the spirit of the 1970s with silhouettes with vibrating colours and richly ornate embroideries of beads and sequins, textured tweeds and floral motives. Silhouettes are finessed with beaded sautoirs layered with sparkling pendants and bold belt buckles adorned with Mademoiselle Chanel’s lion.
Imagined by Virginie Viard and crafted between the CHANEL Ready-to Wear ateliers in Paris and the Maisons d’art of 𝘭𝘦19M, the 2022/23 Métiers d'art CHANEL - DAKAR collection is the result of multiple meetings over the past three years between Virginie Viard and artists of all backgrounds: the choreographer Dimitri Chamblas who called on Germaine Acogny’s École des Sables dancers, but also directors, musicians and writers, all together with friends of the House. The show is part of a vast cultural programme and the starting point of an ongoing exchange between the House and Senegal.

This is why Chanel’s Métiers d’Art is one of my favourite shows, after couture. As a traveling show, its amazing to see the marriage between the house codes and where the show is located. I have been holding my breath for this particular one, as an African myself who is well versed in different cultures around the continent, and an avid fashion person having studied in Italy, this show brought tears to my eyes. The imagery, Malic Bodi’s genius and all involved, the music, location, the cultural appreciation, diversity & inclusion, to the garments. It’s absolutely sublime. I’m looking forward to seeing the work the Chanel continues to cultivate with the continent as it’s essential for fashion to be inclusive and diverse in al aspects! This is such a beautiful it to a very long year! Magnifique👏🏾🙏🏾❤️

Loved all the beautifully designed fashion, the colour combinations and also the fact that there were all sizes in it. The music also entertaining but it’s a shame that these days such beautiful models don’t smile anymore on me catwalks as it would really help show highlight their beauty and what they’re wearing 😊

Like frfr as an African American person to see a big brand like Chanel to represent our style and culture of Africa in the clothing was amazing. Like she did an awesome job and definitely has kept true the codes of the house. Karl is proud, Coco is proud!
ADOS (American Decendants of Slavery)culture has its own unique flair in several regions of America. Africa is Africa, America is America with over 400 years of innovation. It's amazing how the rest of the entire world wants to emulate ADOS culture. I met a Syrian young man who told me he studies ADOS culture fashion,style,music 24/7. Dance Your Style World finals in December had a Japanese as world winner dancing as if he'd been born to ADOS parents and lived in a homogeneous ADOS neighborhood.
He was good but ADOS he is not.
ADOS culture is co-opted globally.

Nice! I loved that there were cultural influences in this show … Perhaps it was a subtle homage to Karl’s culturally-influenced show in Cuba. Very nice touch to end the show with a performance from DBN Gogo x Musa Keys x Dinho. Bravo!

All these additional CHANEL collections had a purpose - to show off that Karl is the quickest, sharpest and ahead of everyone, alongside showcasing possibilities of the house. Now, they seem routine with no clear purpose or energy behind it. They should let Virginie find her own new format, scope and rhythm while providing ever increasing client appetite. Also, it is very clear that Karl and Valentino were the last generation that truly understood certain finesse, whimsy and true nature of couture. This you can't learn - era, circumstances, class etc. enriches you with it. Maybe Victoire de Castellane has it in her, for the rest is game over. This sensibility is almost lost forever. It is not bad, nor good, just it is how it is, however it gave an edge for Chanel big time! So they need to find substitute for it as well, because the brand is becoming just like other brands and no princess of the world can't change it. Wink win. All in all Virginie is great, but Chanel needs to rethink it bigly. Its getting really boring...

I kind of was expecting more from this collection. The details and colours are rich where you can see some of the cultural influences from Senegal, but it lacks interest. The silhouettes are the same, a lot of the cuts are no different than what Virginie has been doing for the couple past collections. It's missing the elements that made the cruise and métiers d'art collections visually interesting that Karl would show in the past. I found his to be so experimental and you never knew what to really expect when he was presenting in Seoul, Dubai, Edinburgh, and etc. That's what I was hoping we'd get from Virginie in this collection.

@@tashaallen8359 she's been playing it safe for 3 years now. Karl played it safe for his first few collections in the 80s but then went all out after that. Everyone talked down on his designs but he was way more innovative for the brand.
