Guys keep talking about Motown, but the O'Jays were not Motown -- they were the Philly Sound, on the Philadelphia International label.
I don't think they're talking about Motown as a geographical location, but as a music genre. There's even British acts that were "Motown".
Glad you caught that. When they said Motown I scratched my head and thought " I think from Philly"
You’re right, but they think that all soul music from a certain era is Motown. There is also Stax Records and some others, but they don’t know the difference.
Potatoe, patatoe!
TSOP❤
Tell me this isn’t a thousand times better than rap and modern pop music
Amen!!
Agreed
Most definitely
Not a question
1 million % 👍 🎉
"The Philadelphia Sound" - the soundtrack of my life!
Tough to beat that 70's Philly Soul sound. I still love it!
SHE USED TO BE MY GIRL by the O’Jays is an absolute BANGER !!!
LOVE that one!🎉🎉
& Forever Mine, by them! 😊
Yep two good songs by them
My friend I have to agree a absolute banger of a tune .
No no no..not that one
After 10 years in the business, this was their first hit, reaching #3 in 1972
They ended up with 6 Top 10's in the 70's, 4 Top 5s, and one #1, "Love Train"
They ended up with 10 #1s, 20 top 5s, and 24 top 10s on the R&B charts.
They were not Motown Philadelphia. They were very cool still is I just went to the o, jays final tour ,out standing.
Back stabbers was a major hit back in the day. On the radio all the time.
I had forgotten about it. Cool song. We've probably all seen friends - one with a hot GF, all of a sudden the guys are hanging around more!
True.@@redpine8665
This song was still strong on the radio in the late 70s and early 80s.
Yes indeed.@@chrisoakley5830
True.@@redpine8665
Undisputed Truth- Smiling Faces (This song is the truth!!!!!!!!!!!) Manhattans- Shining Star (This is a beautiful Valentines song)
I'll second the Undisputed Truth song, and I'll add "Love Or Let Me Be Lonely" by The Friends of Distinction.
Undisputed Truth- Smiling Faces
Yes! "Smiling Faces Sometimes" is one of the finest Motown songs of the early '70s, and another "beware!" song. They only had one major hit, but what a monster. Love how the O'Jays referenced it right at the end.
I sometimes feel like I'm the only person who even knows about Smiling Faces because I rarely meet anyone irl who mentions that song.
@mitchlkwitz. Yes! Such a great underrated song. 👍
Oh Yeah!! 61 year old white guy here and we always watched "Soul Train" with the Great Don Cornelius on Saturday afternoons in the 70's, so much better than American Bandstand.
The dancers on Soul Train had THE best moves, the clothes, what a time!
This song HIT me as a kid, I learned the concept of adults lying to each other, having affairs and bring duplicitous. Life lessons from the OJays.
Y'all are too good, everyday I have to see what new musical gem you've uncovered.
Now you two are watching "Liar Liar" over on your movie channel, so I have to see that with you too.... I know, I know, I really should become a Patron. ❤
63 yr old white woman and I did too. So many great performers back then
@@gwyntx7620 I saw Minnie Riperton perform "Loving You" on Soul Train and was blown away. American Bandstand was fine but Soul Train was better.
Four Tops "Bernadette".
Eddie Lavert is a dynamic singer.
My dad wanted to name me Bernadette after this song, but my mom said nope! 😂
They should've flipped a coin. heads we name her Bernadette, tails we name her Brenda... Seems fair to me. 😊
@beeseewill2407 Huh? Lead vocals were by Levi Stubbs.
Love the ojays. Please do darlin darlin baby
I love that song!
Towards the end of this song, Eddie Levert sings the words "smiling faces sometimes". This is a reference to an earlier soul classic, "Smiling Faces Sometimes" by the Undisputed Truth. Check it out!!
Well, you beat me telling them this by 9minutes lol! You must be another old guy. These songs came out when I was in high school.
Yes! Both great songs. I have requested Smiling Faces Sometimes. "Can ya dig it?" I know they can.
@@twentyfiveyears5010 AM radio in the early 70s. I was in 5th and 6th grade when these two came out and listening to American Top 40 with Casey Kasem on Sundays.
@@KenRoerden About 4 years ago, my 20-yr-old son asked me if I had ever heard of this great group he had discovered called "Tower of Power." Yeah, I had.
Live From Daryl’s House featuring the O’Jays and Daryl Hall is a must!! Both of them are bit older but sounding great. 👍
Yes!
A lot older - but YES!
Any episode of Live is always good!
AGREE!!
Yessss!!!! That whole episode is SO good but Back Stabbers specifically is TO DIE FOR!!!!
i love that i grew up in a time when a single radio station would play so many genres of music... in an hour, you would hear r&b, rock, folk, country... it is the reason so many people from my generation enjoy such a wide variety of music...
So true, stations that were considered pop back in the day, played this song all the time.
They also played an occasional "Country Crossover" hit like: Baby Don't get Hooked On Me by Mac Davis. I'd like to see them react to that one.
That's because (for the most part), we didn't break music down by "genre" at the time. You either liked the song or not. If not, you just waited a few minutes and something that you liked was bound to play. It was all "just music"
@@TonyM1961 Good point, if it was good music, it was accepted by most people.
Philadelphia radio stations were very segregated in the 70s. You got one genre of music, period.
When I was a child in the 70s songs like this, For the Love of Money, Smiling Faces, War, Ooh Child, That’s The Way of The World, What’s Going On, etc., so many socially conscious were the norm, and I never expected it to change… then disco came in, but there were still socially conscious songs around straight through the 90s, but now, not so much.
That's a great list of songs right there
"The O'Jays" were a fantastic band on The Philadelphia International label, they had many great songs:
"I Love Music",
"Love Train",
"Put Your Hands Together",
"Used Ta Be My Girl",
"Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet, Tender, Love)",
"Livin' For The Weekend",
"Time To Get Down",
"Give The People What They Want",
"992 Arguments",
"Forever Mine",
"Now That We Found Love",
"Don't Call Me Brother",
"Survival",
"Listen to The Clock on The Wall",
"Brandy (I Really Miss You)",
"Put Our Heads Together",
"For The Love of Money".
There are plenty of other tracks but these are good ones to continue with.
The guy in the right is Eddie Levert, excellent vocals and his son Gerald saang real good too but he passed sadly.
Actually Eddie Levert had two sons who sung…both were part of the group called LEVERT and tragically, they both passed way too soon. Gerald was also part of the supergroup LSG featuring him, Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill.
Shawn was great too and he also passed.
As a white guy from Detroit who lived most of my life in California, I was into Motown and all the bands that came out of Philly. I was was accused of wanting to be black by my Army buddies because I listen to the black sound scene in the 60's and 70's.from those two cities. I didn't care what people said about me honestly! Still don't to be honest. That music was so smooth and to this day, I still listen and love the music that all the those great bands put together. Sorry but the music was the best in the 60's and 70's!
I agree! I grew up with this music of the late 60s and 70s, and I simply love it! Too bad for those who can't appreciate it!
1967 Motown - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - "I Second That Emotion"
Also “Tears of a Clown” 70’
Harmonies and bluesy disco. The clothes! The choreography! Soul Train! Such a great sound. Thanks for taking me back to my younger days.
DITTO!!!
WLS...Chicago !!😂
So good! They don't make music like this any more.
Old schooler's music 🎶 are considered classic timeless legendary music of today is nothing but trash
Nope, not at all
O Jays are great and this song is deep , and full of soul.
One of the best Soul Train performances by the O'Jays is 'Stairway To Heaven'
They're backstabbers because they are your friends. You already know where your enemies stand, your friends are the ones you have to watch 🤔
Right. You’re facing your enemies and your “friends” instead of backing you up and having your back stab you in the back.
They aren't your friends. They are pretending to be your friends. That's why they can stab you in the back.
The O’Jays biggest hit might be "I Love Music." Def my favorite song of theirs.
William Powell was an original member of the band, he in the center of this video. He unfortunately died of cancer in 1977 not long after this video was shot. The O'Jays was the first major concert I saw probably about 1974 when I was 12 years old at The Forum in Inglewood, Ca.
I thought this song was FIRE, back in the day, and STILL DO!!! O'JAYS are AWESOME!!! SO GOOD!
Now you need to do - Smiling Faces by Undisputed Truth. Different song, same theme...
I love watching Bandstand and Soul Train on Saturdays!
I watched both as well. Loved it!!
My cousins and I used to perform "Used to be my girl" after we saw it on Soul Train. We was good!
I LOVE their 'Used Ta Be My Girl' &'Forever Mine!! 🎉🎉 😊
🇬🇧 The O'Jays weren't Motown guys, they were The Philly Sound. Not Motown but still fabulous. ❤🎼
Love Train by The O'Jays is one of my favorites. Great Philly group.
Playing For Change ( PFC ) version of Lone Train rocks.
They're from Cleveland!
LOVE the O'Jays!!! I was working with a BEAUTIFUL young Black woman (23 years younger than I). One day she walked by me and suddenly turned towards me and said, "What they do?" I sang "They smile in your face, and all the time they want to take your place. The Backstabbers. Backstabbers." She smiled at me and said," And that's why I love you." I walked her home after work, and we've been in a relationship ever since! I LOVE you, Yesha!! and it's such a good story!!
Angie Stone sampled this song in" Wish I didnt miss you"
I never realised that fact until I heard this song😊
The whole Levert family was/is super talented. I was on a plane with the O'Jays once, everyone who wanted an autograph got one. They were so nice and patient, class acts.
O'Jays were from Philadelphia, PA. The Sound of Philly...the best!!
The next song from the O'Jays should be, "I Love Music" " For The Love Of Money" "Used To Be My Girl".. And Jay! the quote that you give every day "Give The People What They Want" was sung by them.🎶👍🏽✌🏽 Oh, and they have a lot more hits.
Sister Sledge - "We Are Family".
this song includes one of my favorite lines in music history... the verse goes... "i keep getting all these visits from my friends.. they come to my house, again and again and again.. so are they there to see my woman... I DON'T EVEN BE HOME, BUT THEY JUST KEEP ON COMING..." writing lyrics the way people actually talk is so cool..
ASHFORD & SIMPSON - " Solid " official video Soul Motown and R&B classic from 1984 VEVO video 80s Duets beautiful song you'll definitely love it.
That's a great song 🎵
Ashford & Simpson were a married song writing team who became performers. Their other 2 hits are "Shake Your Groove Thing" and "Reunited".
Old school R&B from 65-75 just can’t be beat. Whether it’s from Detroit, Memphis or Philadelphia, I love it all. And I grew up as a metalhead 😂
Soul music of the 60s and 70s was a big influence on many rockers.
I miss the 70's. Bellbottoms and platform shoes! How about The Stylistics - People Make the World Go Round.
Eddie Lavert on the right.....Walter Williams on the left....Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members and Philadelpia*s finest!
A good summer song from '71 was "Smiling Faces" by The Undisputed Truth.
Hi Amber and Jay, I am a 74 year old woman and I think you’re wonderful. You were just talking about the O’Jays and wishing you had some more music similar to theirs. You need to check out Tavares. The first song you should listen to of theirs is,Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel. “1976” Make sure you watch the one where they’re dancing as well as singing. They are five brothers. They have one other brother and a sister.
As someone who's not the biggest R&B fan ever, I gotta say that when an R&B song hits it really hits. This has been one of my favorite songs since it was first played on the radio.
Listen to the O'Jays' "Used Ta Be My Girl", which (Yay!) has a Soul Train video.
O'Jays singer Eddie Levert formed a group with his sons Gerald and Sean and they had a #1 hit "Casanova" in 1987. Great example of the New Jack Swing genre.
I requested that song by the O'Jays too! It's my favorite of theirs.
My favourite too!...
🎉🎉 plus their 'Forever Mine! 😊
@@jana7514 My other favorite is Let Me Make Love To You!
@@324cmac That's a great one too! Can't go wrong with the O'Jays!
🇬🇧☺️
The "spunky" one is Eddie Levert. Dude is a legend
The O'Jays run the gamet from the social commentary to the soulful sensual " Ship Ahoy" to " Help" to " Family Reunion" to " Who Am I" you got to hear more
Hi guys, love your channel! I'm a radio DJ/host in Connecticut. TThe O'jays are still putting out kick-ass new music! Try The Rich Keep Getting Richer. I play them on my show, which is as eclectic as your show. Our station is free-form, meaning the DJs can mix genres on the fly if they want to. But I'm not here to promote that. I love your reactions to all the music of from my childhood to now. And I hope to suggest some one day with more thought, keep on keeping on! And my daughter's name is Amber, too!
The Dells. The love we had stays on my mind.
It was so much fun growing up in the 70s❤!!! We had “ Soul Train “ and “ American Band Stand “ !!! We had tv shows like Sunny And Cher and Donny and Marie and lots more!!!!
Soul Train performances: Dynamic Superiors - Shoe Shoe Shine / New Edition - Kinda Girls We Like / James Brown - Medley (Cold Sweat, The Payback, etc) / Aretha Franklin & Smokey Robinson - Ooh Baby Baby / Stevie Wonder - Perfect Angel / Jermaine Jackson - Daddy's Home / A Taste Of Honey - Sukiyaki / Honey Cone - Want Ads / Bar-Kays - Holy Ghost / Joe Tex - I Gotcha / Millie Jackson - My Man, A Sweet Man / South Shore Commission - Free Man / Run DMC - Rock Box / The Temptations - Hey Girl
“ I Love Music” and “Cry Together “ are two of my favorites by the legendary O’Jay’s. Keep up the good work you two!
Soul Train was so much better than American Bandstand. Better clothes, better hair, better dancing, and MUCH better music. The dance line was always a treat to watch.
The first singer is Walter Williams, the guy in the middle is William Powell who has sadly passed, and the final guy is Eddie LaVert, father of Gerald and Sean LeVert of the singing group LaVert. Sadly both of Eddie's sons died as well. Walter and Eddie are the only original guys left of the Ojays. The Ojays just finished their last tour and announced their retirement from the road. ❤❤❤
The OJays has so many great songs and their Stairways to Heaven is so amazing
Oh my goodness. As a gen x-er, I just recently fell in love with the Isley Brothers and now you’re getting me reconnected with the OJays, so smooth! Love it! So excited about the level of music from the 70’s. I was just a kid then and definitely didn’t appreciate music yet.
Great reaction RSR!!! The 70's had the best music. The 50's guys were still relatively young....the 60's guys were still gettin it done....and the 70's were a melange of wonderful styles and genres!
Well said.
Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes with Teddy Pendergrass on Soul Train doing "Bad Luck" is another classic dance track from that period. Give it a listen.
Everybody talks about the guy in the right , Eddie Levert , rightfully so, yes he is such an expressive singer and one of the most dynamic performers , but the guy on the left is just as important to the group. Walt Williams is such a smooth singer and equally smooth performer, these guys brought it in every single performance , in the studio and on stage!
This song came out in 1972 just as I was starting to seriously listen to the radio. So many great songs that year and this was certainly one of them.
Thanks for reacting back to the Mighty O'jays guys. Here's some more suggestions for some O'jays
Time To Get Down (1972)
For The Love Of Money (1973)
Now That We've Found Love (1973)
Sunshine (1973)
You"ve Got your Hooks In Me (1973)
Stairway To Heaven (1975)
Let Me Make Love To You (1975
How Time Flies (1975)
Livin For The Weekend ,(1975)
I Love Music (1976)
Desire Me (1976)
Message In Our Music (1976)
Brandy (1978)
Use To Be My Girl (1978)
Thanks again Jay and Amber 😊
The two members who were the most prominent singers in this video are Walt Williams (the one with the mustache and afro), and the one on the far right who sings most of the song is Eddie Levert. Williams and Levert are both still alive in their early 80s and perform from time to time. The man in the center is William Powell one of the original founders of the group who passed in 1977.
I always remember Don Cornelius ending the show saying "We wish you love, peace, and soul!" - and everybody in the studio would say the last word with him. :)
O'Jays!
Love that Sound of Philadelphia the great vocal groups with MFSB playing on the records.
It doesn't get any better than The O'Jays!
A little trivia....They may be part of the sound of Philadelphia, but the O'Jays originally hail from our hometown of Canton, Ohio. Yes, that one. The home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
You should react to She Used To Be My Girl by The O'Jays. Love it!
My fave!🎉🎉
Songs had messages back then as well as entertained.
The lyrics “smiling faces sometimes tell lies“ is from the song Smiling Faces Sometimes by the undisputed truth.
One of my favorite O'Jays' songs. We used to do this in a band called Shades back in the day. "I wish they'd take some of these knives out' my back!"
You MUST also react to LeVert, two sons of Eddie LeVert and one of their close friends. Sadly both of his sons have passed away but their music is timeless.
Love this song! So glad ya'll are hearing and reacting to it!
The one who puts the "spunk" in the group, as you say Jay, is legendary Eddie LeVert. And the other lead who voice you two really like is Walter Williams. I can't remember the third guys name though. I wanna say he's Bill Isles, but I can't be sure.
More must-know classic R&B/Soul from the 60's and 70's - Little Anthony & The Imperials - Goin' Out Of My Head, Billy Stewart - I Do Love You, Deon Jackson - Love Makes The World Go Round, Clarence Murray - Let's Get On With It, Clarence Carter - Slip Away, Gwen McCrae - Rocking Chair, Betty Wright - Clean Up Woman, Al Green - Let's Stay Together, The Dramatics - Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get, Billy DeVaughn - Be Thankful For What You Got, The Spinners - It's A Shame, The Undisputed Truth - Smiling Faces Sometimes, The Main Ingredient - Everybody Plays The Fool, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - Where Are All My Friends, Archie Bell & The Drells - I Could Dance All Night, Jean Knight - Mr. Big Stuff, Tyrone Davis - Can I Change My Mind, The Delfonics - Didn't I (Blow Your Mind). So Many more GREAT songs, but this will keep you loving this genre for a while. Enjoy!
This was so cool to see. By the time I saw it it was vintage but I still loved seeing. Black people dancing with each other, epic fros, bell bottoms ringing, The O'Jays singing, coolness in everything seen and heard is just beautiful.
It is a soul imperative to listen to more O'Jays. This is the Philly sound. And do yourself a favor and watch them on Daryl's House with Daryl Hall. The O'Jays are definitely some of his musical heroes.
You can never go wrong with a visit to Motown. You could devote one day a week to Motown artists and not run out of great music.
I hate to say it, but the O'Jays were never a Motown artist.
Motown is great
The O'Jays mostly recorded on Philadelphia International Records *The Philly Sound *
Philly International
@@Spo-Dee-O-DeeAnd you can really hear it in this song.
Thanks for the wide and varied music you review as it refreshes our memories of the great ones we don't always think about, and for your interaction with us all. There are 2 tracks that I feel you should consider reviewing - the first is by Jimmy Nail & Mark Knopfler and is called Big River. Jimmy Nail is a Geordie (much like Chris Rea) and Mark Knopfler is...well the lead guitarist with Dire Straits. This song is about the closure of the shipbuilding industry in Tyneside. Jimmy Nail has a fantastic voice with so many pertinent lyrics. The second is by Lara Fabian and is the 1999/2000 live performance of Je T'aime (which she also wrote). Lara was going through a turbulent time, having split from her boyfriend and experiencing the death of a close family member. Her career was hampered as she was signed to the same label as Celine Dion and Celine's management threatened if she chose to release in the US, they would cancel all the European venues she regularly used. She had suicidal thoughts and did not know whether to continue. Her audience knew of her tribulations and arranged a surprise for her. There are a number of clips of this but the one with French and English subtitles does best to explain what is being said.
One of a string of hits for the OJAYs!! "Love Train" is their anthem one that brings ALL people together. Their music is still highly appreciated by today's generation..."Money, Money, Money", "Smiling Faces", "Use Ta be My Girl", "Forever Mine", "I Love Music"...70s da best!!
I Love Music is another great song of theirs and of course there’s a Soul Train version
Oh, I just love this song I’m over here with a big ole smile on my face ,Thanks for picking this can’t sit still song 😁
The voice on the right is Eddie Levert, the father of Gerald and Sean Levert, both members of the R&B group LeVert. Sadly both brothers passed less than two years apart in the mid to late 2000's
"Forever Mine" by the O'Jays is one that no one has mentioned in the comments...the guy you love so much is lead. Also, "Lady" by The Spinners is another classic.
Love that one!🎉🎉 You're right Gerald is great in that one, Eddie too. 😊
Love the O'Jays! React to "I Love Music" next. Also, more from The Spinners "One Of A Kind" or "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love". Tavares is another good soul group. React to "It Only Takes A Minute" Thanks. 😎
Tavarez has been suggested many times, hopefully they'll get to them soon.
Soul Train, and the others (Midnite Special) were appointment TV growing up. There were no letters like VCR or PVR etc.
This song is OK but Use Ta Be My Girl is by far the best O’Jays, IMO. Do check it out, a Soul Train version of course. There are two versions, one with principally the band and the other with only the Soul Train dancers.
Do they make music like this in 2024? Hell no. But at least we can recall the tunes of the ‘70s. The only thing is the songs were too dang short.
Used Ta Be My Girl by them is my favourite too!! 🎉🎉 along with Forever Mine! 😊
The O'Jays are so phenomenal and so underrated. Back Stabbers was BIG along with super unifying Love Train, and She Used to be My Girl. My best childhood radio memories.
Used to Be My Girl was their biggest hit. It was their crossover hit. Of course the 90s group Levert, the sons of Eddie Levert, the lead singer.
Another song with a similar message you should check out is “ smiling faces” by the undisputed truth
I have made suggestions for the undisputed truth with various music reaction channels and so far no one has reacted to any of their songs.
I wanted y'all to do this song!!
T.S.O.P.!!! The Sound of Philadelphia!!! The same time period as the Golden Age of Motown, but a different city.
The whole album SHIP AHOY is amazing. You will love it all. Has the original long version of " For The Love Of Money "
My late husband loved the O'Jays. Thank you for this.
The O'Jays...on the right is Eddie Levert (Lead vocals on the right of the stage) Walter Williams (Lead vocals on the left) and William Powell (Backup vocals in the middle). Some of the O'Jays many hits, I Love Music, Love Train, Darlin, Darlin Baby. Thank you for your great reactions of the O'Jays! Keep up the great reviews!
Wonderful orchestration in this song! I've always loved the richness of the piano at the beginning.
Hey RSR! For something really different the next time you do O'Jays check out their 1993 live performance at the 30th Anniversary Bob Dylan concert at MSG. An incredible line-up of bands performing all Dylan covers and the O'Jays were there performing "Emotionally Yours". A POWERHOUSE performance. They had already been performing it for years in their shows so was a natural for them to perform it at this tribute concert. For extra credit name the backup singer with the wavy blond hair. Hint: this was just before her solo career took off. Check out the whole concert. Still amazing 30 years later.
Happy memories of my 70's teenage. Phenomenal track!
My Uncle loves this song...so as a kid, I fell in love with it.... "They smile in your face..."
Ahhhhh The Sounds of Philly. Absolute quality music that's still being played week in week out up and down the UK and soul gigs everywhere. Magic!
The one on the far right with the afro, his name is Walter Williams.
Good classic music selection. ✌️😎
Guys, this ain't Motown it's Philly.
Two very distinct sounds from the mid 60's to the mid 70's. Motown came out of Detroit and the Philly sound mainly out of the Sigma sound studio's in Philadelphia. The Motown sound was created by Berry Gordy and song writers like Holland-Dozier-Holland, Johnny Bristol, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder to name just a few. It was distinctive in so much as they brought the sound of the symbol and drum to the front of the music in many of their early hits. They had a number of different record labels such as Motown, Tamla, Gordy, Soul, Rare Earth, MoWest to name just a few.
Philly song writers such as Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff who set up Philadelphia International Records (PIR). Tom Bell and Lind Creed who wrote for the Stylistics on Avco Records and Blue Magic on Atlantic Records. Along with B Hawes, C Simmons and J Jefferson who wrote for the Spinners who started off with Motown and moved across to Atlantic Records. The Philly sound was a distinctive but very different sound than Motown. The Philly sound of known for its strings arrangements and really smooth soul. With bands like the O'Jays, Intruders, Harold Melvin & Blue Notes, The Three Degrees, MFSB, Billy Paul etc all on PIR and other bands previously mentioned above, The Spinners, Blue Magic, The Stylistics, The Delfonics and many many more. There was also STAX again a very distinctive sound with bands like Isaac Hayes, The Dramatics, Booker T & the MG.s, The Stable Singers, Sly and the Family Stone to name just a few.
