I agree with how you described this saga as being overly fast paced. This one almost does feel like it is a one off rendition from a skald or bard and everyone is sort of already supposed to be familiar with the characters and events and this just happens to be the one off version that was preserved haha.

I have this horrible habit of needing to review every single thing that I read, and I've spent the last two weeks doing a lot of handwringing about how what exactly I'm going to say about this. I might borrow a few ideas from this if you don't mind, and I'll make sure you credit you. It's sort of like reviewing the Iliad or the Odyssey: too big, too rich, too full. Thanks for getting us together to read this. It was so much fun.

No problem! That’s one of the reasons I call my videos “discussions” rather than reviews. They’re more my personal thoughts than an objective assessment.

This was definitely different from other sagas I have read

It was great fun, but I’m not sure I’d recommend it to someone as a first saga.

Are you sure that crow wasn't a raven?

In the moment it sounded more like a caw than a croak 🤷🏻‍♂️

This was my first saga. I didn’t make a dedicated video. The story felt disjointed, and my “take away” was a mass of disjointed feelings. Somebody - it might have been the Rambling Raconteur - suggested this might be a good place to start, but it doesn’t predispose me to the genre. I might prefer your Christian author (of the other one you mentioned) apologizing for the paganism. But we’ll see.

An Icelandic saga that is kind of like a real novella is Egil's Saga and I think would be something you might like from what I've gathered David.

I will try to make that my next saga… but probably not too soon. 😅

I liked the sense of preservation of the pagan past, and agreevthat it is a remarkable book. It did feel a little breathless, rushed. However, I am pleased to have read it. Wouldn't it be great, if other versions existed? Nevertheless we have to be glad it exists at all.
