The top box has some kind of mounting bracket, aka an accessory. Probably a go pro mount but an accessory nonetheless. I am sure if I got a walk around I’d see a USB charger and cellphone mounts on the handle bars. Probably a tank bag too. Trust me, this guy got all the extras.
A GS on tarmac is a depressed GS. It has a burnout. It needs a sabbatical. It is not happy as it used to be. Leave that stupid city, and go down the famous mud roads. It weighs a lot, so people stay on the tarmac and the GS gets depressed. There should be a 250 cc GS boxer! Almost just as large, but a lighter engine. Far slower, but strong enough to have a great ride. Is it there? On tarmac you need the RT.
I use my 1200GS in daily traffic. Albeit without the full panniers, extra gas cans, fire extinguisher, and God knows what else. This guy is a poser with that clean bike, you're right!

These bikes are PERFECT, by the way. Riding hairpin roads in the mountains, riding gravel or dirt roads, riding weeks on end? Buy a GS. Not cheap, but you'll see these bikes are worth every Yen. Or buy a five to ten year old one. Also good, why not? And you can do GS courses to enhance your terrain riding skills. Depends a lot on where you ride it.

What I would LIKE you to write is this. Bought a slightly larger front wheel and fork, got myself some rallye tyres, changed that flimsy chain for a stronger one (including a set of rallye sprockets). Top speed has gone down, put in first gear I can climb a mountain. Made an enduro out of it. Living in Brazil, that makes sense. Now my MT09 is ready for all terrain travelling, just a bit lighter than that GS. What are you waiting for? Or do you own an Africa Twin, too?

They're called Rotopax. There's an oval hole in the middle of them and a bracket that swivels on the top to lock them in place. They're fairly common.
