- Grappelli and Grisman play "Dawgma" and "Swing '39" on a 1979 episode of the Tonight Show. Sadly, I turned off the VCR after the last song and missed recording a Grappelli-O'Connor duet of "Tiger Rag" that they played over the closing credits. Johnny Carson's reaction at the end is priceless.
Stephane Grappelli: violin
David Grisman: mandolin
Mark O'Connor: guitar
Mike Marshall: mandolin
Rob Wasserman: bass
Oh my God…Stéphane is so good he makes me cry.✌️❤️
sooo there was a time in which the tonight show featured 7 minute jazz instrumentals... and they got roaring applause...
When the show was still 90 minutes (which it was up until 1980), Johnny (or whomever was guest hosting) would regularly give extra time to musical acts.
@@RayNDeere MAGA
@@claymationwaves you win dumb shit of the day. Congrats
Hell yeah... And they used to feature The Tonight show band with doc severinsen blasting away a lot
@@greg4673 I still remember the show the day Benny Goodman died. Johnny wanted Doc to play a Goodman medley, but because Graham Nash was the musical guest that night, we had to hear a mediocre, forgettable song by him instead. I was disappointed that Johnny did not overrule his producer that night.
Incredible performance by that basssist!
RIP Rob Wasserman
Mark O'Connor on guitar adding some great back up chords. He and Grappelli went on to record some great swing fiddle duets.
Saw Mr. Grapelli in the mid 80's at The Musician's Exchange in Fort Lauderdale...got to talk to him for several minutes after the 8 o'clock show. When he realized I was leaving he asked me to stay as his guest for the 11 pm show. He had the kindest eyes and mildest demeanor but when he played his violin pure magic filled the room. At 55 years of age today, that night remains one of the highlights of my entire life. "THE MAN WITH THE VIOLIN" as he was known was a direct link from gypsy tunes with Django Reinhardt in the 30's to Yo Yo Ma and Sting. He was also an amazing pianist. Pure genius !!!
You delighted me and made my day with your find memory. ❤️❤️👍👍🎹🎹🎸🎸
what a blessing!
Thanks for sharing that. Great memory!
I remember watching this on TV. He was so hip for his age. And, he just kept getting better the older he got. If he lived to 110 he would have been unstoppable. One of my favorite musicians.
As great as they all were, I couldn't take my eyes off the bass player, that guy was flat out FLYIN'!!!!
Top shelf music right there! Today's crap on the radio doesn't even compare to this!
Great music. I remember this particular Tonight Show, back when there was quality entertainment on late night television.
I played the David Grisman Quintet album "Dawg Jazz Dawg Grass" for an old girlfriend one time and she said something I've never forgotten, she said, "these guys are having some serious fun." In all my years teaching music I always told my students to have fun, because music can be serious fun.
I heard David Grisman at McCabe's back in the early eighties. It was an interesting combination of bluegrass and Weather Report. Good show.
This shit would NEVER be on the tonight show today. Damn shame. Carson had some great, great folks on.
You are so right. The Tonight Show is nowhere near good enough a platform for this wonderful shit.
Doc Sevrenson.
I would totally watch Stephane Grappelli jamming with the Roots though.
That's because Carson, for all his faults did have class.
Love that rich rhythm guitar, so much more tone
I’ve been listening to Stephane Grappelli for almost twenty years and somehow this is the first time I’ve seen an actual video of him performing
To me, "Hot Dawg" is my go-to album when I am feeling low.
Saw Stephane in the early 80’s in a small club in NYC……. phenomenal! Not much later caught a solo performance of David Grisman in a tiny club in Cleveland Heights, my home town. Both great memories.
This is a great piece of music history. Thanks for posting it Jim Stripling. What an extraordinary group of musicians to be on the same stage. I got to see all of these guys in various thrilling concerts around the Pacific Northwest and Vancouver, Canada in the late 1970s. Like a couple of the commenters below I was able to meet Stefan Grappelli and chat for a minute. Apparently meeting Stefan Grappelli is unforgettable to me since that is 40+ years ago. I also remember jamming with Mark O'Connor quite a few times at music festivals in the Pacific Northwest from 1977 to 1979 or 80 when I was a banjo player. Since I wanted to eventually have a social life and a girl friend I decided to switch from banjo to guitar (badum bump - a banjo joke, they are so easy to make).
ALWAYS A TREAT to hear the MASTERS of their instruments!
Jajajajaja... WOW!!! Out of this world! Really!! The Great David Grisman and Greatest Stephen Capelli. Unparalleled!
Saw the quintet in 80 or 81 several times in San Francisco's Great American Music Hall with Rice on guitar, Anger on violin, Mike Marshall AND O'Connor, and once with Grappelli sitting in with them. Awesome.
Me too. Those were the days!
Got to see Stephane live a couple times in Detroit who saw him play with the hot club of France. Listening to Grapelli now and his mind blowing harmonics. God almighty!
young Mike Marshall!
Yeah!
Did you ever get the album "Chirascuro"?
I'm a self taught muscians.,acoustic guitar, electric bass as well as acoustic bass not a stand up.This show on Carson was pure magic.I think wouldn't be great to play this perfect..Wow.Rip Stephane Grappelli.
Real musicians!
Got to see him play once at Blues Alley. He went in a janitors closet during break and ran scales the whole time!
Jim Stripling - THANK YOU! This is insanely good..
yes, indeed it is. Glad you liked it
Been a fan of Stephane for 40 years ~ has anyone in this audience ever seen Grisman's face ?
Back to practicing:) Good to remember where the bar is set!
Same here
everyone one of these guys is a master.
Bad ass. Pure magic. Two of my favorite musicians. The whole unit is magic but Grisman and Grapelli are stellar in this brief set. Always. Wow.
Who in gods name could dislike this ?!?!?
Why is this comment in every thread?
Mike Piercey ONLY BLINDED FOOLS MY FRIEND
Bassman working his nuts off - fantastic all round.
This is amazing on so many levels!
Thank you, great mix.
Met Mark O'Connor in Steamboat Springs when he had dinner at my Restaurant there called Giovanni's with Peter Rowan ! I still think David Grisman's best works for me is when he played on " Old and in the Way" which is one of the greatest albums of all-time ! Don't believe me , give it a listen !
Thanks for copying this and having the vision to do so; awesome!
hot dawg is a desert island album. this performance is absolutely off the hook. and the talent, in addition to stephane & david, you have mark o'connor, mike marshall & rob wasserman holding it down. amazing!!
Fantastic! Thanks for posting this Jim.
very great improvisation with .. Mike Marshall on the left. It's a very good lesson !
Wow, just wow!
You can't help but feel the happiness:-)
Sheers brilliant, R.I.P STEPAHAN GRAPELLI 🎻🇮🇹❤
Somewhere in my stack of old albums lies this record.. just hope it still plays if I can find it..I literally put a hole in it I listened so much.
Young Mike Marshall, awesome!
thank you so, so much for sharing this with us. Honestly I have had so much fun listening to this recording over the past few years. What a blast of energy!
Does it not annoy anyone how Mark O'Connor is literally a virtuoso in every instrument he plays fiddle, mandolin and guitar. One of the most gifted people alive.
He'll be the first to tell you that.
@@JamesJessenfedden Lol, he does toot his own horn a lot, but hey, the guy IS a genuine musical genius.
it annoys me how much he promotes himself, that's about it tho
found Mark O'Connor's burner account lol
Pure fire!
All that bounce and youthful vigour from grappelli alone!❤❤❤
Recall seeing this & then attending the date noted in KC before going to find my fortune!
Hot Dawg was the second album I ever bought on vinyl. Very sentimental spot in my heart for both David and Stephane. Thanks for the vid! Great quality
I was lucky enough to see these two guys at the Paul Masson Winery ❤
This. This is what I want to play when I start practicing Violin. Well, eventually anyway.
Ah, such is fate. What you did preserve is pure magic!
So many legends ❤ mike is so young my goodness!
Grande Grappelli y Grisman !
So amazing to this day.
Music at another level ! Fab!
Who the HELL would thumb down this? This is amazing.
A master of Gypsy Jazz and more.
That was some wonderful music-honest to the bone….☮️🎶🔛🌎
That's great... thanks for sharing
Incredible
10/10 Thank you.
This is great! Thanks for posting
thanks so much for sharing this!!!
Grappelli sure was a young 69 year-old...AWESOME!
beyond amazing!
Very happy to find this. Thanks for posting.
Now that’s music!
Thank you soooooo much for posting this! In-freaking-credible!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Magic....
two legends! Bravo!
I saw these guys when they toured--and on Tiger Rag, they all jumped in the air on the upbow! Darol Anger, Mark and Stephane on fiddle!
Fantástico, sublime . . .
World class!!...and beyond!!...
Incredible. Funny when Grisman goes into his first solo and the camera quickly pans to O'Conner.
Either the band didn't give them the proper sequencing, or the camera director/shot caller had a glitch. Was pretty much spot on for the rest of the performance.
Terrific!
simply wow!!!!
Wow I didn't know Mark O'Conner was in the Quintet! Thought it was only Tony Rice.
Pure joy!
I caught Grappelli at LA's
Wiltern Theatre in the 80s 'an indelible jazz concert from opening to closing Note
Smokin’!!!
If you don't tap your foot to this fantastic music, you can't hear at all!
That's the hottest Swing 39 ever. Grisman is ON FIRE.
Adorable¡¡¡❤❤❤ Sublime¡¡¡ 👏👏👏👏
I saw one once with Mark and Stephan playing Tiger Rag, I can't find it again.
Magisch und unvergessen.
The one and only!!...
There is an album of them live, I think it's just called David Grisman Stephane Grappelli live. Steph and Mark do Tiger Rag, and they do King of the Gypsies medley. If you watch the movie "King of the Gypsies" (starring Eric Roberts, Judd Hirsch) you will see Steph and David sitting around jamming in parts of the movie! They did the soundtrack for the movie.

haha this is amazing wow really!
no comments on Rob Wasserman on Bass..When I saw them play I thought I was hot on the bass..Lol Was not even tepid at the time
you missed a few, or else they were added after your comment. He is fantastic!
Stunningly great. Thanks Johnny for letting 'em pick. Dawg you've come a long way since Earth Opera.....
Positive vibes
Это божественноооооо!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! !
All I got to say this is" SMOKING HOT"
A little credit to Mark O'Connor in the background playing difficult chord comps and making it look like childs play.
Oh my...
Next level shit. Awesome!
They all went to Sears and bought matching slacks together
