    Design Type: Semi Non-Freestanding
    Number of Guylines: 6
    Stake Quantity: 13
    Testing :
I received this tent at the end of summer and have been using it since then.
Temp ranges from 60’s to the lower 30’s.
I’ve experienced strong winds, moderate rain for hours at a time and light ice

    Pros :
Very good price considering how light this tent is. Most tents in this weight range will run hundreds more.
Good size for those whom are 6’3” and under. Taller than that and you will find this tent snug
    Excellent 3 season tent
    Ultra light weight
Very airy but condensation may be inevitable regardless of the shelter’s design.
Excellent design which features an awning.
Extremely small form factor - can fit horizontally in your pack - only 13” long - great option for bike campers
For such a small tent; 32-inch peak height. It has enough room to lie down or sit in a hunched position, and to keep your gear out of the rain, but nothing more.
You can use the inner on its own with the fly and if you want, you can even use it with a large tarp for a variety of setups.
Easy to pitch and break down; not the easiest but not complicated either. A tight pitch can be achieve rather easily.
    Good weather resistance
Excellent quality; no issues when I received the tent and none have presented themselves with the last 6 months of testing.

    Cons :
Small tent without a ton of space. Think of it as a step up from a bivy; not a full tent in terms of size b
Requires a lot of stakes to setup
Because of the need of stakes to setup properly, this isn’t the tent for all adventures
    ….
With this tent, you need to ask yourself, what are you seeking? What is that that you need and want?
Are willing to sacrifice livable space for weight-savings.
Seek a shelter with a small footprint and/or small packed size.
Want a dedicated pole set, because you don’t use or need trekking poles, or because you are willing to carry more weight in exchange for a less fussy pitch.
Camp in humid environments, and therefore benefit from a physical barrier between you and a possibly condensation-soaked fly.
Always use the fly and tent body together, for a full-sided and fully enclosed experience.
Have a limited budget, or don’t care to spend $300-$600 for a shelter that is marginally lighter and/or uses more premium fabrics like 7d nylon or Cuben Fiber.
There are lighter tent stakes on the market; ditch the included ones if you want to drop a few oz.
No tent is perfect as there is always some compromise between weight, price, durability and usability. However, Sierra Designs has done a nice job with this one and is worth putting high on your consideration list if you’re looking for a new three season solo shelter.

On almost every tent set up I’ve seen you do, you make a critical mistake of extending the ground cloth beyond the tent. In rain that channels the water under the tent. The ground cloth should never extend beyond the tent walls. Just my two cents.

I took this exact tent hiking in Minnesota about 6 weeks ago a decent snow storm came though and dropped about 6 inches and had 30mph winds gust up to 45 for the the first 3 hrs the snow froze then later on lightened up. This was not a fortcasted storm and i was a bit worried but the tent took in like a champ and i had absolutely no major complaints. I like it

I bought this tent 2 summers ago (along with the meteor lite 2), and stuck with the meteor lite 2 because of the interior room and ease of set up. Also, I was really fat and the high side 1 was just too small for a 230lb claustrophobic me. But last fall, I got down to 180lbs, and I could finally fit in the High Side 1 and I really started to like it. It packs down really small, it's a really simple design, and totally functional. My complaints are about staking it out, and I would recommend that to avoid condensation, to really stake down all those guy lines. Sag happens, and I've woken up with a wet mesh when I was too lazy to stake out the fly properly. ... I had gone to sleep without the fly, but I could feel it getting cold, so I threw the fly over the mesh inner, which warmed up the area well, but also brought moisture.
I really enjoyed your review and your enthusiasm. I've got a trip to Alaska coming up and I've been wondering if I should buy a Hilleberg (very popular up there) or if the High Side would suffice... and I think the High Side might be okay. I'm expecting temps definitely in the 30's at night, possibly 20s, but heavy snow is unlikely, and it's the constant rain, drizzle, and potential winds I'm trying to factor in to my decision. If you're reading this, and feel like commenting, do you think I'll be okay in the High Side in that environment? I mean, I'll spend money on a new tent if I need to, but I already have 6 tents, and I'm thinking while it might not be an obvious choice, it may be a solid choice. Anyway, thanks for your review and video!

  • @iberiksoderblom
    @iberiksoderblom Před 5 lety +1

I like its features and the "high side".
But I really mean that a serious hiking tent (or tactical tent...) always must have an exoskeleton tentpole setup.
Makes setting up in dark and/or bad weather easyer and keeps the interior dry.
If this tent came in a configuration like that and with low profile natural colors, it would be a sure winner for me.
    Thanks for reviewing it, Luke.

      @Im_With_Stupid Před rokem

The new model is out and these older ones are being cleared out for peanuts where you can still find them. I just bought one yesterday myself for $170. $167 or $170, both are incredible deals as the new model has been increased to $300 and it doesn't look like they've done anything but changed the color, although it is a couple ounces lighter.
I imagine they reach the minimum weight by removing the fly and all but the barest minimum number of stakes and guylines. Since it doesn't include a ground sheet there's really nothing else you can take away from it and still have a functional tent.

On the bright side to the colors, at least you can easily refind your tent if it's your first time camping lmao. I imagine this tent might see some viability on major trails like the ACT (not sure about PCT due to all of the high mountain peaks and spontaneous snow). The stakes really may be the only thing holding it back. When you've hiked 20 miles the last thing you feel like doing is messing with that many stakes (they seem ultra light though given the base weight of this thing so that's a plus and you may not have to spend more to shave off that extra bit.)

Ave watched this video a number of times am looking for an ultralight tent for backpacking 3 season in Scotland, west highland way etc in the uk this tent is $310 does anyone think it’s suitable and decent value as obviously costs a good bit more than in the US?

Hello Steve, I'm in the UK too, down South but looking to hike in Scotland next year. I've looked at a LOT of tents online and this is good value - £230 plus footprint, on various sites. I think we'd need the footprint for the extra HH rating but that still makes it 1.1kg with an ul stuff sack. There's nothing close to this - Snugpack Ionosphere weighs 1.5kg, only alternatives are Terra Nova Starlite 1 but that's £350 and tapers a lot. Look out for the Vango Arete 2 - that could be a seriously excellent UK backpacking tent. I'm going to try this though, the High Side 1, for the weight and pack size. Just not sure about the room....

yeah, I agree. I'm more of a earth tone kinda guy. I dont want to be that visible when I'm out camping. I like to somewhat blend in. I'm not talking decked out in camo but some nice flat earth tones.

A more subtle color would be nice. Bright colors, and shorter floorplans seem to be the norm these days. Some of SD foorplans are a bit longer though, which is nice.

Another great review. Although this tent isn't for me (6'2 250lbs) its extremely cramped, but then again look at my size, so nothing being taken away from sierra designs. I just really wish we could get a few more inches for us "bigger" guys. The thing im seeing with most with single person tents is that you really have to fit a certain size and weight to fit comfortably in these 1 person tents and have room for gear (pretty much solved this by using a hammock when out by myself). I like the added vestibule , but rarely do I have straight rain. Its usually blowing in at a hard angle. I'd like to know how well it does in those situations and if you zipper it down how much room is there outside for gear? But as always thanks for the video so i can get my morning outdoor fix. Strength and Honor as always to you Luke, and your family. Have a great weekend my friend.

They make a 2 person version now. I'm considering buying it for my 6 year old daughter and me. We are both little and skinny so I think the 2p would be perfect for us!

If you're wearing that hat because of a cancer scare I've gotta tell you, it ain't cuttin' it. You need at least a 3" brim, 3/2" -4" would be better, it won't be long before the UV's start to get serious & that hat you're wearing will be next to useless.
