- In this video, I'll show you how to make a simple self watering bucket. It is perfect for those who do not have time to constantly water, or those who just forget to water. It is also great for places with hot weather and can help your plants survive. You can also reuse this bucket many times when your plant dies from frost or disease. Fertilizers may be added through the reservoir tube as well.

Thank you. Working gardener, mom mother in law., military mom, grandmother and domestic violence Advocare. You are giving me peace with this watering option. I subscribed to thx again love the step by step
Thanks for taking the time to do this video. Some helpful hacks: Cut top off a plastic bottle for a funnel that can be left in place. Put a piece of window screen on the pipe first to keep out mosquitos. If no pipe available, piece of old garden hose works too. I had access to lots of buckets so just dropped one into another. Quick, easy, and doesn’t require cutting the lid or providing support in the reservoir. Just drill holes like you did. Microfiber cloths make great long-lasting wicks. Split end that goes into dirt into 3-4 strips to spread out in soil. Positioning overflow hole to allow about 1” of air space is vital, and do check that bucket is set on level ground to maintain that air space all the way around.
Love these buckets for our hot Hawaiian summers!
When you grow your own food it gives you a sense of pride and you know what you are eating. Thanks for the video.God bless you.
there are two things you may want to do to keep mosquitos from getting to the water and laying eggs. I put screen material in the drain hole. Window screening also works. Put a cap on the pvc pipe that you use to refill with. I place coffee filters over the holes to hold the dirt from falling into the water area. A place a cut piece of screen cloth over the lid. Remember that the roots take a while to get its roots that deep, you will need to water from the surface.
Thanks for the great tips. I don't have a problem with mosquitoes, but great for those who do.
Good add. Thanks. In Washington State that would be a good idea. We get lots of mosquitoes.
Pantyhose work very well.
I participated in the original design of these about 12 years ago. You did a great tutorial!
A few suggestions:
1. Cut a 45° angle on the bottom of the fill tube so it doesn't sit flush on the bottom of the bucket. It'll allow for the water to flow into the Bucket.
2. Be certain that whatever you use as the platform to hold that lid cut out will not collapse under the weight of the damp soil, otherwise your soil will end up in constant contact with the water and could become anaerobic.
The overflow hole is cut an inch below the soil platform to create an AIR GAP between the soil and the water. It is very necessary that the gap doesn't dissappear under the weight of the wet soil collapsing into the reservoir.
Finally, you can use a 2nd lid with a smaller hole cutout to allow your seedling to grow through it. This will protect the unit from becoming too saturated if it rains. Or, stretch a garbage bag over the top, and cut an "X" in the plastic. Set your seedling then affix the lid rim in place over the plastic. Trim off the excess plastic.
I know these work!
Our original design was based on the patented Earthbox, so we called these "eBuckets."
Thanks for resurrecting this much-needed answer to promoting food security.
"Feeding the world, one eBucket at a time!"
Wow thank you for the amazing and detailed tips, especially being part of the original design. Appreciate it!
That is great information! 👍
Awesome additional information Thanks
Thank you for sharing those ideas, very helpful
I have 2 Earth Boxes, they work great, their pipes are cut straight across at the bottom. Good idea to angle the lower end. Thanks!
You explained how to do this in a nice articulate way. I am definitely going to use this self watering bucket! Thank you for showing us.
Thank you for this great tutorial. I appreciate all the comments that give tips, also. A great place to find lided buckets for free would be construction sites (like home communities) where you can ask for any empty paint buckets with lids. Just let the paint dry entirely then peel the dried latex paint off the buckets. And, the buckets are somewhat thicker than the Lowe's or Home Depot buckets. So, more muscle power, please. Thank you, Ms Hawaii for resurrecting this idea. Loving it. 🌺
I'm assuming the bucket's should be good grade. Wouldn't a paint bucket continue chemicals from the paint. Just wondering
I think this is the best system I’ve seen! Not using extra items… just the bucket (pipe & towel) THANK YOU!!
Wow. I'm doing container gardening this year for the first time. This was hugely helpful. Thank you and God bless you.
God bless you! Good luck with your container garden.
I’m so very jealous of the people that are able to grow anything anywhere I’m jealous wish I had a house so I could garden anything I want thanks for sharing

You had me at "lazy" (or as I prefer, why work harder, just work smarter), Misty. Thanks for providing another informative & fun video. Your compact garden is producing/yielding great!
Thank you! Yes producing well. 😊
Helpful tutorial video. Thanks for getting straight to the point and also pointing out the "why" on some of those created features.
Came across your post, I'm from Hawaii too and as everyone knows real estate prices here are off the roof, literally and most of us have very limited space to garden, if any. Have been watching other videos but yours have inspired me to "you can do it" too. Look at that cabbage and wonbok!
Thanks so much.
Thank you for watching! And yes, most of us have no to little yard space but I try to show that everyone can do this!
Perfect for patio garden, thanks.
Looking forward to seeing all the information pertaining to Oahu Hawaii 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks for watching!
You are fantastic! Thanks for sharing this information with us!
I'm really impressed with your method, don't have electric tools but I do have a soldering tool and can make holes easy with it use scissors also, I live in the Mojave desert so this would be perfect, because it's soo hot I don't like to go out much in the day time & am semi disabled & am ready to do container or tote on chairs gardening, making it easier for me as not to have to bend. Oh and also I was born in Hawaii (Oahu) during wwII My Dad was a Marine & met my Mom who was also raised in Hawaii. Thank you so much for your sharing. God bless & stay well!!!
I'm glad that this will be helpful! Thanks for sharing your story about you mom and dad and you being born in Hawaii. What a small world.
you can use an ice pick that you heat over a flame in a pinch too.
@@jnetteshepherd6146 yes great idea. Or a soldering iron would work too.
I have most of my container garden complete for this year here in Indiana but I am going to start on my self watering buckets for next year thank you so much at 65 and disabled this is going to be a game changer for me.
Awesome! Happy gardening and hoping your harvest will be bountiful.
Putting the lid rim back on the bucket also will reinforce the rim of the bucket, so good idea.
Improvement: for plants that need stakes, cages to support plant (tomatoes) drill hole for fill pipe in center of lid. Then run fill pipe wild too any length you need then use fill pipe to attach plant to pipe. This will work with any wicking bucket design. I glue a pipe fitting to bottom of bucket for extra support. If you use her design you can drill a hole in bottom of support container and run pipe thru it Don't glue pipe to fitting so you can remove pipe to change dirt. Dooesn't matter where wick hole is. I use a metal garden stake instead of plastic pipe, especially with indeterminate tomatoes. I think the "stake" is 1/2" by 8 or ten feet long. You can use a pipe cutter ($3- 5.00) or saw like she has or hacksaw. Well worth a little extra time! If your fill pipe is long, you can use a T fitting and elbow to create a fill point any where along fill point

Great presentation. Thank you!
I see your Rosemary is so nice and tall, pretty good video for wicking bucket info, will do this in 4 maybe cuz I like to have it in my backyard with the cemented big pool I never use 🙄😬 all my vegetables are in pots cuz of that 😔 so can you imagine how I’m so tired the whole day watering, thanks for sharing. 😊👍👍👩🌾
Good video, great advice! Thank you. God bless you.
Mahalo❤ I love your video because you show everything I'm old and it seems like all the new videos everybody just like speeds through them I like that you show everything😊 good job❤🎉😅🥳 when I lived in Hawaii.. since I wasn't Hawaiian.. in the early 60s I went to school in a quonset hut on hickam Air Force Base.. all my friends were native Hawaiians so they had their own School😂🎉❤ thank you for sharing your awesome talent! ❤️🌞🤙🏄🪂
Hi 👋 from California. Thank you for this awesome tip for watering plants. I don't know how to plant but I want to try to plant this summer. Blessings.
This is brilliant! ...and because I like pretty things I'd paint or Mod-Podge fabric around the bucket.
AWESOME THANKS BUNCHES 🥰🙏🙏🙏
You're very welcome!
Very nice video, even if you are not sensitive wear a mask to keep yourself healthy as we don't want plastic dust in our lungs. I use a small solder tool and melt holes but like that graduated bit.
Thank you for this wonderful video. I live in the Southern California desert and I can surely use this method because there are days I don’t get out to water my pots. 🙏🏼❤️

I did some last year, but your are made better. I think ill try it, especially for my korean melon I spent to much time watering those last month
I'm glad I wandered into your channel. Finally, someone from Hawaii who has experience, common sense, and does not over-talk.
So many of the websites mention frost date and starting seedlings indoors. I live in Kealakekua, elevation 1,700 ft.
Will my strawberries, cherry tomatoes, and sweet potatoes keep on growing because we don't have distinct seasons? I don't have the specifics about the plants. They were all given to me by friends. Mahalo
Mahalo for stumbling upon my channel! I don't know much about the Big Island but I know you are near Kona. I think your plants will be fine. Sweet potatoes and tomatoes love sun and warm weather. I think even here on Oahu if you start seeds in "winter" when the night time temperature dips near the low 60s they will take a while to grow but they won't die. But if they're already mature they will be fine. If you start tomato seeds in summer they grow faster. Your strawberries will be most productive in our cooler weather in winter and spring but may die in the heat of summer. Happy gardening!
Mahalo for your quick response. I've already subscribed and shared your channel with my friends. Will be following you
This is such a good tutorial! Thank you so much!
