Including Catfish & Whiting , Porgies which was the “poor man’s fish” back in the day. It’s getting worse out there to buy food for ourselves and families. Senior citizens are struggling too. I try to give my mom advice on how to stretch her food by making stews, soups, small casseroles (rice or pasta). We are going back to the 30’s &40’s when our ancestors had to stretch meals with these types of meal combinations. Smh 🤦🏽‍♀️

      The price of oxtails went up in the 90s with the influx of Caribs. We called it cowtail, because that is what is it. Cowtail like pigtail was 1.49 a pound. The Caribs came here calling it oxtail, and it went up to 4.99 a pound. Same tails different name. An ox is nothing more than a male cow with its gentiles removed. That means its a cow...period. But the price when up because of the name. Everything that poor people ate during slavery is sky high now.

    Saying everything is going up is garbage. It’s the same thing they did with chicken wings. Chicken wings were throwing meat, and only SOME we’re eating it, but the minute it became popular at parties/potlucks, chicken wings became extremely expensive. It’s the same now with oxtail. Huge Caribbean population and people traveling, has introduced what used to be super cheap or free when I was a girl in Ja. The way the store employees were listed off by name as family, with the added implication that a thief could get a little “pepper spray” with their attempted meat theft, was charming. - I grew up powdered-milk poor; if it wasn’t milk from our goats. They featured on cooking shows, restaurants etc and boom it's hit main stream. I remember a pack of four was under $4. Lord knows I love me a good ole oxtails. NS I will buy from a booster😥 if the price is right. OXTAILS❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Good interview.

  • @annem.parent8580
    @annem.parent8580 Před 8 měsíci +3

    The worst part of oxtails it is mostly bone. Your paying high prices for BONE!!!!! What makes the prices high is supply and demand. When the beef industry doesn't have enough to meet the demand it will go up on prices in the store. Stop buying BEEF!!! You will see pricing go down. OxTail not so much. I have eaten them myself and they are very tender and delicious. My father had his own meat market and sold Ground Chuck at $.99 a pound in 1970s. The population growth is overwhelming since the 1970s and that is why prices are so high. Not enough to go around.
