I'm glad the script didn't take these two down the romance trail and undermine the whole storyline with a soap opera. That would have been so *typical* of a Hollywood flick at that time, and the fact they didn't go there was a real class act; in fact, it was my favorite thing about the whole film. I thought so in the theater back when it was released, and I still think so today.
pretty sure moore's part was originally written as a man then changed. had the character originally been written as a woman i think hollywood and especially director Rob Reiner would have gone down the predictable route.

@@johnhays2915 Now, that might have been slightly interesting if they had gone the direction of: boy meets girl, boy and girl bump nasties (complete with morning salute), boy loses girl, neither boy nor girl can stand each other by the end of the picture.
That there is what you might call Hollywood heresy.
When they looked at each other after the court is over, one could imply they will have some pleasant conversation some time after. Or not. So leave it to audience's interpretation. The director and writer did a helluva job because this dating scene is multi-layered. Yes It's common date between a man and a woman, but it's also about interaction between their characters over the serious case they are facing, what should they do next. The date is part of their character developments in this movie, it must be there.
I love rhe fact that SHE asked him out on a date and already knew what to and where to eat. They weren't discussing on who's going to pay for the date or worried about what restaurant they're trying to go to.
Just a night out with two people having a deep and genuine conversation trying to get to know each other better which is extremely rare these days.

She speaks directly to who he is and provides a vision and a path forward.

This is why she put him on the spot and have him “risk his career”. To her calling jessep to stand is just doing whats right, but she knows too well that she cant do it herself. Which is she goads him. Very naive of her but paid off in the end.

Love it when Daniel says he does think Jo is a good lawyer, she immediately calls him out on it, and he has no response. One of the few times in the film when Daniel has nothing to say.
He really killed the mood on that date.

This was one of the most low-key, least obvious dates ever. And I liked it that way. You could tell there was attraction, but it was very subtle and the film just dips its toes in to it but doesn't explore it. And it works!

It's cool how there are scenes where Jo and Weinberg both praise Kafee based on how they saw him perform in court. If this were written today, we'd have a bunch of minor characters tell us this at the beginning of the story, and never show it.
Also Kaffee would be a woman.

Demi was at her peak till Disclosure. Once she moved away there was chance for Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Catherine Zeta and whoever followed. Expression mattered back then, acting was rehearsed over n over again till they got it spot on. It was Cinema. It is not so today or a decade ago.

Men and women are not equals and never can be, because men and women are not the same. Having known dozens of servicemen from various branches, I can tell you that (minus the poon they provide), they're a distraction and a detriment to the social and command stability of the military and that they all feel they have something to prove makes them all the more aggravating to be around. Even _other_ "women", prostitutes masquerading as servicemen, hate them. There's no peace anymore.

The case? Yeah. Date with Demi? Nah; there's thousands of femoids in the military with a chip on their shoulder, something to prove, and delusions of manhood. There's nothing exceptional about fraternizing with a military "woman"...unless you count the exceptional stupidity, given that most men could probably do better. If they're not activists or deluded, military women are desperate. After all, a better looking, less-unidimensional female probably wouldn't have to serve to survive...she'd attract a providing man to do it for her.

Not 20 years and wouldn't be plea bargained to 6 months. Good movie though. They could do a part 2 movie where instead of jessip getting convicted he gets promoted, goes to the Pentagon and gets killed by a terrorist plane crash on Sept 11 poetic justice, Dawson and lowding get life in prison instead of death for convincing the court they did not intend to kill Santiago, while in prison lowding snaps and shanks Dawson in his sleep for bullying him in to it, then lowding is found schitsophrinic and is released, kaffey gets approved for flight school and becomes maverick and Joanna becomes the first female navy seal.
