It's my Grand Finale and 1000 subscriber special for 2016. Here's a final one from the Montreal area. We've just paid our $2.40 on a toll road and are headed to Montreal.
YAY ! My hometown at its best again. I'm always hype when someome else is covering my own Province. You did very well. And it's my pleasure for the help ! :) ... I can't wait to see what you'll bring for us in 2017.
OUTSTANDING VIDEO! I watchged it three times..Memories of driving from Ohio to Montreal to study one summer, made 4 round trips,,,,it was always exhilirating to drive into the largest french speaking city in the western hemisphere, but as I saw the french signs, I somehow felt at home.
The VMSes read as follows: From Friday, 1159pm to Monday, 5am - A15 south closed at the Turcotte Interchange From Friday, 1159pm to Monday, 5am - A20 east - No access to Route 138 west For your security, respect the lane lights
Autoroute 40 through the west island of Montreal is, in my opinion at least, one of the best urban roads in Quebec. Though I'm not sure I've ever made it through the Decarie interchange without getting stuck in unpleasant traffic. The completion of Autoroute 30 has been a huge improvement for Ontarians like me to get around Montreal without having to get stuck in traffic on the Métropolitaine.
I think my favourite Autoroute in the greater Montréal is A15 between St-Jérôme and Montréal especially since it was all rebuilt with concrete pavement :D
You got off lucky for traffic. When I drove A15 through there it was a parking lot. Also I had a bad experience with the Montreal Metro. I bought 2 tickets and it wouldn't let me in. The lady wouldn't talk to me... She'd just point to a sign I couldn't read... I wasn't happy!
Great video once more! Thank you for showing me Canada, I have enjoyed the travels with you a lot :) I'm also a fan of Above and Beyond and I know them best from the album they did with Zoë Johnston. Maybe something to include in your 2017 soundtracks? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Phil!
I miss that part of Montreal... Great way to end of your season. You're E Signs are as follows: Friday 11:59pm to Monday 5am A-20 East, Access R138 West is blocked. Friday 11pm to Monday 5am A-15 South Closed at Turcot interchange.
same here as a American traveling to Canada with different ways we spell a common words like Center and Centre but you hit the Quebec border the signs are gibberous all in French when are in a country that spoused to speak English
Quebec's a bit different with its own language laws. It isn't "supposed" to be english. It's pretty distinctly french and has been for a long time. Even in the US, English isn't actually an "official" language. The US doesn't have any "official" languages, just de-facto languages. I think in Vancouver too, we'll eventually see Chinese road signage.
While Canada is bilingual at the federal level, New Brunswick is the only officially bilingual province. Québec is officially French while all other provinces are English. There is even an official body, the Commission de la toponymie, that makes sure place names and other signs are properly marked in French, such as making sure stop signs say "arrêt", even though “stop” is a valid word in French and the stop signs in France actually say, “stop,” or you hyphenate the specific parts of place names such as the Champ-de-Mars station on the Montréal metro, even though that isn’t done at the Champ de Mars/Tour Eiffel RER station in Paris. Heck, McDonald’s had to get permission to use the apostrophe in their restaurant names because it isn’t the proper way to express a possessive in French.
That decarie Interchange, as well as that trench is clogged around the clock, isn't it? Then again, Montreal as a whole is probably lucky; Toronto is probably envying their amount of freeways compared to theirs...
yes the Freeway system in Montreal does seem to be more extensive than Toronto. What's even more surprising is how extensive the Freeway system is in a city like Quebec City, which is quite a modest size place. It seems there was a great "push" in the 60s & 70s in Quebec in general to make things more world class especially with events like Expo 67 and the Summer Olympics of 1976.
Great video! The music was very good and well done. I'm shocked you didn't have French classes in school, especially with the high proportion of French speaking Metis people around Winnipeg. I highly recommend getting a copy of Rosetta Stone. I've been using it, and I find it very effective and enjoyable. i've seen copies at Target for under USD 200.00 on the south side of the border, so I suspect you should be able to get copies up there for similar prices, too. You should also get hold of Merriam-Webster's French-English Dictionary and Merriam-Webster's Easy Learning Complete French to supplement this. As for the electronic signs, here are my translations. 8:03, 11:22 and 16:17 Friday 11:59 pm to Monday 5:00 am Access [from] Autoroute 20 East [to] Route 138 West Blocked Friday 11:00 pm to Monday 5:00 am South Autoroute 15 Closed at the Turcot Interchange 17:24 Autoroute 720 East [Rue] de la Montagne Exit Congestion 18:17 For Your Safety Respect The Lane Lights If someone has better translations, I'm sure they can help, too.
i see English and French when i enter from Windsor or Niagara Falls but i hit the 401- Autoroute 20 it's all French. You don't see signs in Spanish in the. northern part of United states but near the Mexico border you do but very few
If anything though, it'll be in the winter time, so they'd be winter drives. I might have to head to Toronto in Feb for an appointment. So I might take the time to rent a car for a day or so while there.
You may have to buy a "Canada add-on" or something of the like, so you can get the correct roadway information, and it may not be trying to translate the signage whatsoever because you don't have that add-on thing I mentioned earlier in this comment.
I actually didn't experience too much difficulty. Almost everyone in Montreal is bilingual. It was funny, even the homeless panhandlers were quite accommodating. First they'd give me their sob story asking for money in French, then when they realized I didn't speak French, they'd repeat it in English :-D

Thanks for the ride , i will continue with your production from now onward .
Really one of the best videos I've ever seen

Highways & Byways thanks. I can barely believe myself that I edited 40 videos this year.

Over the years I've used probably a dozen or so Above & Beyond tracks. Most of their more well known stuff.

Thanks. The good news is that none of the closures affected me for this video.
An old schoolmate of mine was originally from Kirkland.

in the states it's cheaper to drive than flying and the rails

yeah French isn't mandatory in schools in western Canada. Truth be told, I just don't seem to have the aptitude for languages.
i see English and French when i enter from Windsor or Niagara Falls but i hit the 401- Autoroute 20 it's all French. You don't see signs in Spanish in the. northern part of United states but near the Mexico border you do but very few
Will you every visit Toronto? Would be nice to get a video of the famous Hwy 401!
it might come sooner rather than later I've just learned.
Trans Canada Phil looking forward for it phil!
If anything though, it'll be in the winter time, so they'd be winter drives. I might have to head to Toronto in Feb for an appointment. So I might take the time to rent a car for a day or so while there.
The cyclists own the road! Anyways great video and early congrats on 1000 subscribers!
Thanks.. not quite 1000 yet...but getting close!
Montreal is the only city in the world where its fun to be stuck in traffic as you can watch the women.
my G.P.S. acts dumb in Canada and the mileage get mess up and can't translate the Quebec road signage.
I wonder if I would have similar issues if I drove in the US with my GPS? Perhaps I'll have to update the maps/software on it.
You may have to buy a "Canada add-on" or something of the like, so you can get the correct roadway information, and it may not be trying to translate the signage whatsoever because you don't have that add-on thing I mentioned earlier in this comment.
9:35 So, why is it that everywhere else, things have to be bilingual, but it's just French in Quebec, then?
You mentioned not reading any French. How is travelling in Montreal without knowing French? I know most of Quebec is mostly French-speaking.
I actually didn't experience too much difficulty. Almost everyone in Montreal is bilingual. It was funny, even the homeless panhandlers were quite accommodating. First they'd give me their sob story asking for money in French, then when they realized I didn't speak French, they'd repeat it in English :-D
Lol
