Demo of Martin DX1 RAE acoustic guitar. Recorded with Audio-Technica AT2020 condenser microphone. Distance around 30 cm, at the level of 12th fret.
No post eq or reverb. Only post processing is volume "drawing" to get reasonably equal volume of soft parts and heavy strumming, and to avoid intense use of compression, for most natural tone. Very gentle limiting on master bus to cut some peaks "just in case".
3 parts
- recorded using 0.73 nylon pick
- recorded using finger picking
- recorded with 0.73 nylon pick, through guitar pickup (Fishman)
In the third part You can notice me adjusting tone knob of fishman preamp.
Martin DX1 RAE is an affordable (considering Martin's price range) electro-acoustic guitar. Seriously worth considering if You are planning to spend a money amount around it's price. It was my personall choice. Lucky and satisfied user for a few years now. - Hudba
I watch your demos not because I'm interested in the products but to hear your playing.
For me it's just a way to get to people like you, who later support me continuosly. Thank you a lot! I mean A LOT! :)
Same here, beautiful playing, man. @Darek
Thanx! I appreciate it :)
Darek Wawrzyniak no probs! Please review Martin Dread Jr, or other Martin X-Series!
+Reverent Equus i literally scrolled down just to see if someone else thought this xD
I own this guitar and I can't say enough great things about it. The fact that it is an Acoustic/Electric makes it even better (I've hooked it up to my BOSS Diablo II and a series of pedals as well - it totally kicks tail on any other guitar that may be many times its price point). I love my Martin DX1RAE. If you can find one out there, buy it - you won't be sorry.
From my experience it's a very stable instrument and a good workhorse :)
It’s such a beautiful guitar. The tone, feel, smoothness and it will make you sound better.. Happy to own one..
I've played the 1968 Martin D35 owned by the banjo player in our bluegrass group. It spoiled me on owning anything but a Martin
dreadnaught. I was 82 y o yesterday and have owned many guitars for the 70 years + I've been playing. The DX1 has the punch.
and the stage presence I like. No more trash talking DX1's.
Got mine 2 weeks ago and it sounds better every day. I had to adjust the action and I put on some different type strings but it booms and sustains so nicely
I bought one yesterday. I love it!
They are amazing guitars for the money ! Very high quality that Martin has been known for, for over 180 years !!
So relaxing sound and perfect rich tone
I'm getting this next month 👌👌👍👍👍
I just need this guitar so much
Great playing making that Martin shine..Well done and nice guitar.
Great playing sir!!
That guitar sounds amazing!
Amazing playing of an amazing guitar..
Really amazing👍 i love the sound
Ooh that second section getting your JTE mojo going excellent!!
Just played one of these... don’t let the basic cosmetic finish fool you... this guitar sounds fantastic ! 😀
This is incredible
Wow!! I have the same guitar but I cannot get it to sound like that!! Awesome playing 👏👏👏
I'm also not interested in products :P I'm interested in making You find me :P
Very good guitar and nice playing~
Great playing mate 👏👌
sounds great Freddy fast fingers wow
Have this guitar now it sounds great 😀
Martin should endorse you, i just bought the KEA version inspired by your video, thanks a lot its a beauty,
action is a bit high but ill sort that out, its a real martin sound for a real friendly price and i feel good about my ecological footprint :-)
Beautiful playing dude👍👍👍👍
lazy Guitarist thank you :)
I have one of these. I had the D-16rgt. To me this one has much cleaner and definable tone. Hard to believe it has laminate back and sides and uses a plastic nut and saddle. I believe the models they put out now are even better. Best guitar for the money.
As musicians say....it doesn't matter what it's made of and how cheap it is, as long as it works :)
so amazing! love this guitar, has such a beautiful tone! oh and you are a very talented person!
Thank you David ;)
Respect .. and greetings from Egypt
Thank you! Greetings from Poland :)
Just saw one of these on eBay for 500 hundred dollars and this is the first demo I came across ,apart from the fact it's a bargain ,I'm glad I found this demo
It's a great gutar for it's price. I own it for a couple of years now, and can truly say it's was a great long term choice.
I own this beauty
thx! and nice music hey from Argentina
Hi Darek,
I started playing since september 2016 and i hope to know playing like you later. I bought a Dowina Rustica DCE and i really love it but i think i will take a second guitar like this Martin.
Thanks for your video, Darek.
Seb from France.
Hey Seb! Dowina has a specific sound, It's a good instrument for the price. Usually Dowina will have less treble and more middle focused tone than this particular Martin. I think it's a good idea to have both :) Good luck with your practise and skills developement :)
Damn dude. Never actually felt a demo vid but shit man you got me all tingly. Lmao. Great stuff!
What a sound
Perfect
Great demo and great playing! I am considering one of these guitars and you sure make it look like a great idea. I live in Mb Canada and humidity gets very low in winter and high in the summer. Will I need to use a humidifier with it all winter? I like to leave my guitars out on display. My other guitars have been fine without.... thanks
I'd love to hear DI + mic blended on this guitar :) Great guitar, great playing.
What is DI?
Rick 182 though the input
You convinced me to save money for this guitar... :)
Finally a demo that isn’t bluegrass or generic blues
Oh my word I want to play like that.
Bravissimo. Ok
Hey mate, what strings were you using at this point?
I've had 2 of theses over the years the best acoustic guitar in it's price range
Do you find them hard (or harder) to play than others? I've tried these in the stores and found them very hard to play, especially w/ barred chords. Now none of the ones I have played have been setup at all. But I feel like even w/ a setup it might be harder. I will more than likely get one (x series), set it up and give it a go.
Ronnie Williams I find it very easy to play compared to my Taylor 214e and other brands like Yamaha and guild that's I've owned in the past. Depends on the what typed of radius you are comfy with. People who can play Taylor's find it hard to play martins and it's the other way round
its electro acoustic or pure acoustic?
@@RRW276 some advice. Change the strings. Get Newtone Low tension strings. You will be amazed the difference they make. They take all the pressure away, you will find barring a breeze. They will go out of tune alot for a few month's, just keep on tuning till they settle in. Then they will be fine. They are so good that they take the effort of pressing away, and you will find you improve in other areas as its one less thing to bother about. I don't sell them or anything. But they are a game total game changer, hand made and only £10 a set, sound amazing too. Had my set on 7 years.
slightly heavier than a solid rosewood guitar, but solid and fantastic sound.
I fessed up in an earlier comment I messed up trading my DX1 RAE in on a Road Series DRS1. This guitar, altho with laminated back and sides sounds
better than some solid wood Martins (Martin GPCPA 4 for instance). Scouring the www for another X model geetar. How bout the XA40 model? Any
input?
Beautiful sound and composition,, Darek! I've been playing it on repeat as I am looking for a new acoustic and your video sealed the deal for a DX1RAE for me : ) Do you mind also sharing what strings you're using on this recording?
Hey Boyan. Thanx for your kind words. I'm using Elixir Optiweb 11 Phosphor Bronze
Great demo! I will be extremely thankfully to you if you'll think about checking out some epiphone acoutics like Dove Pro or Hummingbird Pro. I would like to hear them from your perspective, but it's if you won't do that. ^^
very nice job...great tone.. what strings and gauge are you using
woooowwww!
Nice tone what strings were used here? What flat pick and thickness?
Is it worth buying even if I don't really need the electronics? Looking for a nice acoustic, I prefer mainy fingerpicking and folky/country style. I find this particular model very interesting, especially for this price... It just sings, the dynamics seems to be right on point, responds to your hand perfectly! I'd like to know your opinion on this.
Great video and playing! greetings
Do you have any music ? I would love to buy your music, if not you really should start selling songs cause your talent is amazing. I have been playing for 30 years and I can appreciate you talent, you have the passion. I love it.
Thank you Nate. You can find my all my music at my channel. 99% of my vids are my compositions even if made just for a demo purpose. Unfortunately I have no songs to seel by far but I'm working on my album literally as we speak. The alubum will contain mostly rock based electric guitar stuff but I hope you'll find something to enjoy there as well. All best!
Great job! Besides your mic, what do you use to get such a clean clear sound in your videos?
Thank you! I mostly do avoid anything unnecessary in signal chain. In this demo it's a mic plugged directly to Presonus Inspire 1394 interface.
DX or GPX is fit for studio recording?
ps. great playing sir.
What string gauge you using?
Nice playing. Man that guitar still has that Martin sound. I hate to say it but Martin just knows how to do it right. I don't call this an entry level guitar. Some do. But that shouldn't be said just because a guitar is affordable. I just bought 2 of these. USA made black label and I bought a Mexican made black label. Both solid top spruce. Apparently there are some that are all laminate or they are listed wrong on some sites. I'm a little confused about that. Could be the black labels are solid top and the tan are not, not sure. I'm not saying these are the best on the planet. They are NOT HD-28 quality of sound. But I've played for a living my whole life and can tell you as a gig guitar you would NOT be at any disadvantage using one of these and they sound really good. Mine were the non pre versions, I added a K & K mini' pickup ran to a Presonus channel strip with the upgraded tube where I can compress, EQ and shape the sound going out as to not be totally at the mercy of a sound guy LOL., using a volume pedal on the floor, and have been gigging with it. The Tayor I'd been using I paid $2500 for and its an amazing guitar. Switching to the Martin I fair easily as well. It's a wonderful instrument.
No i na wyjazdy super, bo głównie laminat.
I see one for sale that's listed as DX1RAE HSC. What does the HSC stand for?
I think you just sold me one of these guitars...
Hey, i have the same guitar but the neck in the middle where the thumb layed up is a bit rough compared to the rest of the neck wich us smooth.
How about your guitar or is that normal?
Mine is even through all it's length. Same was with few other ones I have recommended to my friends. I have no idea what could happen to yours :(
Sounds like the Martin DX1 I traded in on a Martin Road Series DRS1. Wish I had just bought the R S outright and kept the DX1. I'm a dumass!!!
t a Bill. I replaced the OEM strings on my DX1 with Martin 80/20s Mediums
OK. I badmouthed laminated, Mexican guitars!!! I bought another brnd based on it's being all solid rather the HPL. After a month of
trying to bond with it, I availed myself of Guitar Centers 45 day policy of returning the guitar for a refund OR swap for another brand.
I swapped it for the Martin DX1. I'm really pumped over the swap.
Is this a thinner neck? I want something like the yamaha f310 but better sounding :)
best
Anyone had a chance to demo the cutaway version against the non-cutaway? Any loss of bass or fullness?
I personally would go with non cutaway anyday.
what's the name of the first song?
Incredible playing! I am 60 years old and want to start playing guitar. What do you feel would be the best play ability guitar that’s made regardless of cost considering sound quality as well?
don't buy it because it's a Martin. Maybe the feel is good but Its a low end ...
for me, this guitar sound very dull
Pierre Tombale you’re mad
Hope you got one. I've put Newtone low tension strings on mine. They go out of tune alot because they stretch. But after a while, they settle down. They take all the effort out of pressing down hard, so much easier on the hands. Make all the difference, and allows you to concentrate on other things. Plus they sound amazing. They really make playing a pleasure. The difference is amazing. Just keep tuning till they settle, might take a few months . Hand made and about £10. Same as any good quality set. I've also had my Martin set up by a Luthier for £30. You don't have to, but it will lower the action, making it even easier. Hope you got one. I love mine and cherish it. Play it every day. You will thank me.
Witam.
is thisbthe same as the Dreadnought Junior?
What strings are you using? Stock?
which fretboard cleaner is best for this guitar
always go for dunlop. and imo fastfret is good for prolonging strings' life
i think you just sold me on this guitar. I hope they're paying you.
They don't but I get something much more precious by doing this - listeners like you :)
The absense of the "dots" in the neck kinda bothers me. Why Martin did this?
I like the absense of the "dots". But they are there, on top side of the neck..
inlays are extra when they're making the guitar. Martin puts together their guitars by hand. But the x series is made in Mexico. They're made cheaper, still sound great, but because they're made cheaper (and quicker) they don't add inlays.
I like it better like this though....
You won't even notice when playing. Use the dots on the top of the neck.
How much that guitar bro?
If you don't mind me asking, what strings did you use?
This one has Elixir Nanoweb's 11 Phosphor Bronze which I use for most of the time but to be honest for recording, a regular Martin strings have more of that "wooden" tone and I would prefer them besides the fact Elixir sounds 80% of their tone for year or two while regular strings sound perfect for 3 days and then go really wrong :)
@@vawrzyntry Newtone low tension strings. They stretch alot but make playing a breeze, after a few months of tuning they settle in. Sound amazing. Hand made. Only about £10 a set. Told my mates to get some, and they were blown away that they take away all the pressure off your hands and then you improve in other areas. Sound amazing, a real game changer. Give them a go. Had mine on 7 years. Why work any harder than you have to.
I gotta be the dumbest picker on this planet. I had the clone of this guitar. Like a true dumass I used it to trade up to another Martin. A Road Series DRS1
I traded the DX1 and a Taylor 110 in on the DRS1. Returned to Guitar Center to buy both the DX1 and the Taylor back. GC had doubled the price I paid for
both!! And the DX1 had a buyer who was returning to pick up the DX1. GC has a policy of not selling used guitars for 14 days. The buyer had placed a deposit.
Sir, wich gauage of strings are on guitar, 011. or 012.? Beautiful.
These are Elixir 11 Phosphor Bronze Optiweb
@@vawrzyn thank you I have DX1AE, same, is there a big difference between elixir phospor and phospor bronze? Regards...
@@stranac1978 Yes, there is an audiable difference. for me phosphor bronze and bronze(you probably meant). For me Bronze does not pull as much "wooden" sound of the guitar as the phosphoer bronze does. More like electric guitar strings on the acoustic guitar (or something between electric and phosphor bronze), Hard to describe with words.
@@vawrzyn understood, sorry for my bad english, I was born in Washington dc & live there 2y...best wishes 🙂✅ I have exactly same guitar, and she give me maybe 70%...and I use only bronze...I didn't know for phospor...beginner🙂🙂🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸✅✅ but I'm not satisfacted with Martin..'cause, guitar is fine, neck, no frett....all five stars...strings...?! Thx for your time, mister Darek.
Whats better sounding: DX1KAE, DX1RAE or DX1 AE? Which wood is the best on this guitar?
Midaw all depends on what you’re looking for in your guitar. More bass and overtones = dxrae. More midrange and more dry sound = dx1ae. Look up the difference between the tone woods and make a decision based on that.
They are all the same, the only difference is the decoration of the first layer of your HPL back and sides. Absolutely no difference soundwise.
They are all the same. If you check the hpl inside they're all grey/dark. I've tried the rae and own a ae. Same.
Even with that cheap mic you managed to make the guitar sound as if it was made by the greek Gods
Well done!
Thx! This mic doesn't sound cheap in opinion :)
@@vawrzyn the stratabond neck feels akward or pretty normal? Thanks. Excellent play.
You think Johnny Cash would have tried this if he was still around?
little martin or Dx1rae?
i just bought the DX1, the little Martin doesn't have the full bodied sound of a full-sized guitar
That's correct. There's no way to compare guitars with such a different body size.
Is this different than the dx1ae?
I think the only difference is that the DX1RAE has a rosewood rather than the DX1AE's mahogany back and sides
What flat pick and thickness are you using?
I'm using 0,73 nylon pick. This info is also included in the viedeo - look at 0:20. Cheers!
What strings and gauge were on this Dx1?
@@billdedrick1914 in the factory they put Martin SP 12-54 phosphor bronze. In this recording I'm using Elixir Phosphor Bronze Nanoweb 11's
I've had mine for about 2 years. Here she is in action czcams.com/video/KKSEo9N12sQ/video.html
