    Lmao they don’t make ‘em anymore and Amazon doesn’t sell them. Just called Ford and it sells for $160 for the whole assembly. Found the rubber elbow at Napa for $30. This video helped a lot. Thanks dude.

    Well, You saved my ass again! 4 years ago I followed the 4 part video of timing chains in my 1998 Explorer 4.0 SOHC motor and its still going strong. Now I went back to your videos because I had the P0171 & P0174 codes. Been working on it for a week. Tried the relearn strategy, Still ran up and down. Watched your video and sure as shit that was the problem. Changed out the hose, Test drove it and no more racing engine or dying at a light. It was so bad that sometimes coming to a stop light the tranny would bang so hard. And yes I did do something stupid, I changed the IAC motor thinking that was the problem. Your the best!! Subscribed to you for 4+ years now!

    I had a rough idle in my 2003 Explorer. One of my best friends, who is a certified Ford mechanic, pulled the codes and insisted that it had a cracked intake manifold. After checking the video, I located the rubber elbow and sure enough.. It was the exact same split. Since it was a Sunday and I am 2 hrs from a parts store... I cut a piece of washing machine hose and Voila!!!! Fixed!!! I then disconnected the battery for 15mins and the Check Engine light reset itself. Thank you very much.. All is good again!!!!

    Thank you so much! My 2002 Explorer would not run on its own while idling and found the problem in less than a minute of having the hood up. My elbow was disconnected from the hard tube. Popped it back on and put a hose clamp on it for now. You're the best!

    Here is one on this problem that no one that I have watched covered. I had rough idle a PO171 code and stalling when put in gear, I check every sensor looked high and low for a vac leak watched over a dozen video and could not find my problem. everything checked out as good final we figure it out a clogged fuel filter was not allowing enough fuel to get to the engine a long day of pulling out our hair ended with the very simple and cheap fix of a new fuel filter. The one important lesson I learned was start with the basics and branch out from there.

    Changed out the valve gasket on my wife's 2008 Ford Fusion today. Did exactly what you said in your video, felt very confident. The job took me close to an hour. Took my time taking everything apart and cleaning/ inspecting. Waited for about 4 hours for the RTV to cure, then ran the engine to operating temp, found no leaks. Went for test drive and double checked the valve cover for leaks. Wonder how much a mechanic would charge me for this job! Excellent job on your video!

    My 2003 Ranger 4.0 never had a rough idle just a sudden CEL for P0171 and P0174 lean codes. I checked my PCV elbows and didn't see any cracks or holes. I pulled the front elbow, the one in your video, and found a small hole on the underside. I replaced it with a elbow I had, cleaned the MAF and cleared the codes. I hope this fixes the issue.

    I have an '03 Sport Trac, My truck was wanting to die while sitting at idle for a long time. I came across your video, while searching for how to change the O2 sensors. I went and checked the elbow, and low and behold, the elbow had a split in it. The only thing I was hoping for in this video is showing the exact placement of the complete hose, removal and install. This video just saved me $300. Mechanic didn't even check the elbow, just went by the codes and insisted it was the O2 sensors.

    Thank you very much for this info. I have a similar setup on my 2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L. One design I don't like is how the PCV has to be mounted to at port at the end of the Left Valve Cover. A Mechanic had cracked that PCV mounting port off the valve cover and it cost me plenty to have that valve cover replaced.
    So, for me that PCV can be very costly to changeout, if I have to change the valve cover too. I changed lots of PCV valve, but I don't want to change this one.

    Another reason it could be hunting for idle other then PVC or TPS or IAC on cold starts is the Timing chain tensioners, there are 2 of them an upper and lower..this was my case.

    Great tip. I've had my '03 SportTrac since '05....Pretty decent and dependable vehicle. Replaced this a couple of years ago. You're exactly right, from my experience dealing with mine, really just small components fail from regular wear and tear. The most annoying things were the emergency fuel shut off, and that darn t-stat housing (X3), With regular maintenance the hard stuff been held at bay so I've been happy. My wife just bought a '14 Explorer 3.5 V6. We'll be lucky if it's any where near as good of a vehicle.

    Encountered this exact same problem on my cousin's C5 Corvette. Very similar design, and it collapsed in the same way. Idle was hunting and rough, stalling occasionally. Was hard to find because the intake tube opening is pretty close to the throttle body on those and it masked the sound. Replaced the broken elbow with a scrap length of fuel line I had in the shop as a temporary fix. That was about a year ago. Still running fine that way.

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have a 2001 sport trac with the 4.0, and I have been hunting a idle issue for almost a year. From what I understand there is a job1 and 2 for these engines. And I cannot find this hose on my engine, I do see the plastic hose that goes to the rear of the valve cover, but no rubber hose on the front of the engine. Do you have any idea's for my engine? It runs ok, but sometimes when you put it into gear it will actually die, and start back up again after restarting the engine. I am getting horrible mpg at only 13 mpg, and have been for almost a year. This thing is driving me nuts. I have cleaned everything you can think of, and you could eat off of my engine. I am crazy about maintaining my vehicles so any oil leaks are fixed as soon as found. But this vacuum leak has been evading me. Any help would be greatly appreciated, one last thing the truck is not throwing any codes and never has. Thanks again.

    Hey Brian, I am most likey off topic here, but I'd like to know how to get a good front end alignment, repair/replace child door locks and headlight alignment. was given 2000 explorer XLT. You could say a rolling dumpster, it was and still is in need of a lot of TLC. Yesterday the engine ran erratically, and died when wife drove to work. She thought it may have been overheated. She added 50/50 mix antifreeze and it appears to be ok. However, after viewing video, I will check that tomorrow. I am unable to drive, and apprehensively must ride in it to Dr.office. It seems squirrly on the road, one slight overcorrection scares me a bit, much like a willis army jeep. Is this because of the wheelbase being short or incorrect tire size? All 4 are the same, just smaller. Thanks for videos, and your time/expertise.

Fuel pressure 65psi, new fuel filter
    I dont want to change intake gaskets Unless I have sure reason to. Or is that the only option for vacuum leak in this engine, Maf reads fine, and so do O2 sensors, no exhaust leaks, what would you try next.Your the best on the net!

    Assume! Nailed it! My 03 Ranger XLT suddenly started running rough, nearly dying while idling and unable to rev over 2000 will accelerating. Seemed like it was running out of gas; it was not. Then started running better after. No check engine lite and no codes. Change fuel filter, checked fuel pump related fuses and relay. Everything OK. Just drive it. Now, two weeks later, it throws two codes: P0171 and P0174, right and left banks lean. The Chilton manual is pretty much useless for this so did a google search for Ranger P0174 P0171. Bingo! The first hit was not quite right so checking the other hits lead me to your video. Great video and thanks for the tips.

    I just did a top end job on my '99 Explorer 4.0L SOHC (heads replaced, every gasket and o-ring, timing cassettes, tensioners, chains and sprockets, etc.) and now my brake booster is leaking vacuum. It's running rough at idle, but no codes. Whenever I disconnect the line running to the booster and put my finger over it, the engine continues to run rough. I did have 90 psi compression on #1 cylinder, but I believe it was a stuck ring. Compression is now around 150+, so I know it isn't that. I haven't checked the PCV yet, so I'm going to give that a shot next.
    Any tips on what else can be causing that?

    Thank you Brian, With 2003 Sport Trac V6 4.0L what must I do to re-tune or adapt for flex-fuel...?? By "flex fuel" I mean using any combination of Gasoline, E10, E15, E30, E50, E85, or pure straight ethanol....{in a just pump and go fashion}.
    Since or local stations now put in random amount of ethanol I never really know what I am running.. E85 might be E50 .. Pure Gasoline does not really exist at most stations in Missouri {due to government mandate to add ethanol/alcohol}.

    Hey I have a 1999 ford explorer 4.0 / 2 wheel drive the oil gage started bouncing around today and 30 min later it started a knocking noise I changed the sensor already and it's still doing it.. The knocking makes me think it's the oil pump can you tell me your thoughts on this and if you think it's the oil pump what's the easiest way to change the oil pump??? Thanks in advance

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  Před 9 lety

      Aaron Stoner if it started knocking then an oil pressure test is in order if it its low you need to look at the oil pump drive under the cam synchronizer first then go after the oil pump. How is the oil level?

    Hey! Good evening. I have a 2002 explorer 4.0 with a new engine with no more than 4K miles on it and my rear timing chain has a bit of a noise, I’m wondering if I can get away with replacing that external tensioner. Not sure why my new engine would have any noises at such low miles.

      @FordTechMakuloco  Před 10 lety +1

      It seems the arm has been botched yes, all wipers clip into the arms no nuts or bolts required. I would change the arms out and some new blades and you will be all set with the correct arms and tension so you have good clearing of the windshield for the upcoming fall rainy season and winter snow.

    Why does ford have two different style Upper Intake manifolds for the SOHC for these model years. Like mine is two huge double barrel things and this one looks like what most rangers have. My last explorer which was a 2000 XLT is same as my 2001 Explorer 2 door Sport which has same front end as a Sport Trac because for some reason they couldn't decide on that either.

    I thot some of the readers might want to know, if you happen to accidentally switch plug wires 5 and 6, you will get a P0174, high long and short term fuel trim bank2 only, and loss of power, but no check engine light, and no backfires, runs only a little rough,, ask me how I know :) the correct cylinders are noted on top of the coil , very faint on this vehicle but i was able to find them

    I have a, 07 explorer, 4X4, 4.0L with just over 80,000 miles, that runs rough idle and dies after I have driven her for a while gotten her up to running temperature and shut her off, resting for 2 - 30 minutes and then try to restart her. I have changed my throttle body, MAF, intake manifold gaskets, (caused they leaked) and still have the same issue. Codes come up with a p1000, but that is no big deal, and had a B1676 error pop up, but I do not know if that has anything to do with the engine running rough, I have no idea. The only thing I can think of after this is spark and fuel. According to my scanner my fuel is now with in normal range, which leaves spark. I was thinking about changing out my ignition system, Spark plug wires and spark plugs.
    What do you think.

    I have a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer and I just replaced the thermostat housing and the intake manifold gaskets. Now that it is all back together it I am having a very rough idle/misfire. I took the intake back off to investigate and there is now oil in my intake at one of my cylinders. Could this oil be caused by a manifold leak, which would be causing the misfire/very rough idle? Tricks on getting the intake manifold to seat well? thank you

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  Před 9 lety +1

      Paul Seaman No once your at speed the vacuum leaks are null you have a secondary ignition fault causing the misfire.
