Saw an excellent article in which the reviewer gave their take on what Groundhog Day was really about. In essence, Punatawney was Purgatory and Phil was imprisoned there until he expiated his past sins. At the end of the film his soul is put up for 'auction' and is bought by Rita - an angel in human form! Interesting take.

Back then if a reviewer really liked a movie they'd give a very vague premise and say "I don't want to ruin the rest for you" but if they didn't care for it they'd spoil the whole thing with a complete overview of the movie. But in this one, he seems to like the movie but manages to spoil the big parts anyway. Still a good movie though.
