- It's been 10 years now and that gives me a lot of perspective. So here are 3 things I've learned since I've stopped gaming:
1️⃣ How much excessive gaming affected my family
2️⃣ Cravings come and go but that's ok, manage them
3️⃣ Be cautious of screen time in general, it's easy to replace gaming with other useless internet activities

To be honest I don't think it has anything to do with being a streamer or not. Streaming is pretty saturated these days so it isn't very lucrative. Most people do have the goal of streaming or going pro when they are playing multiplayer games like League of Legends though. That is literally the game structure and they designed it in such a way to keep you at a certain level and very few people can break the restraints that they have programmed into the system to keep you at a level where they want you to be. Video game addiction quiz: gamequitters.com/video-game-addiction-test-for-gamers/
8 out of 9
This test is stupid and has no real value. You basically have nine questions that completely differ in severity, and yet every question is worth 1 point. That you didn't see how stupid that is when you created this quiz really tells us a lot about your intellect.
-ADDICTIVENESS OF CONTENT
addiction doesn't have to be playing for 16 hours, it can also be overspending, multitasking important tasks with gaming at school/work excessively etc, leaving other hobbies for gaming. the more it's harder to put down & the more you keep thinking about playing it even when not playing & get through everything in the day only wait for that time of the day the more addictive it is.
-SPECTRUM
addictiveness level of it might be on a spectrum or other things that you do in the day may make you think it's not addictive, but it is. Even though to try to understand or be blindfolded would be each person's choice. And people can still figure out ways to play it within limits. But like just because many alcohol consumers aren't addicted, doesn't make alcohol not addictive, same is the case with gaming.
- GAME DESIGN
many companies hiring psychologists/neurologists etc to constantly research on how to make food, games, apps, sites, videos etc addictive for people is well known. the articles from the conversation -"The business of addiction: how the video gaming industry is evolving to be like the casino industry" and inc "This Video Game CEO Shares How Gaming Companies Secretly Exploit Your Addictions (and Tells You How to Stop Them)" explains it. if a gaming companies ceo knows it, I'd be fooling myself if I said otherwise.
- ADDICTIVE GAMES
Though I play less,I I knew that games being addictive is real, it may not under "actual addiction" but they are designed to be addictive, just like any other entertainment/any other form of online content.
- NO HATE TO GAMES
doesn't mean I hate them/blame them,i actually like them given that I don't make my life about them, though I dislike how overly exploitative the gaming industry can be, but doesn't mean awareness about how to not get addicted to them or balance them shouldn't be spread.
- OVERCOMING ADDICTION
I understand that you've overcome something and you're sharing how to overcome it with others so don't let the haters stop you. You have my respect for putting this online due to how judgemental internet can be & how much people love blaming, shaming and hating people rather than accept something. All this is insightful! Thanks a lot.
- HATERS
Some people below your comment are getting sensitive & defensive of gaming due to how much people blame gaming & gamers & i understand that because I used to be a gamer though i play less. but the amount of hate you're getting makes some part of gaming community seem quite toxic, when they're free to not quit if they can balance it & skip your content or actually argue while being civil than attacking.
No one has to quit I think it’s just a matter of putting it in its place but it can still be something you like to do like a hobby but it doesn’t have to be your life or personality but it’s still your decision and I respect that
Also plz pin me
16 hours a day? Bro, that's clearly an addiction issue you have. Most people are just happy to get an hour a day after work.
I have been playing games for most of my life and took a break for years. I have to say that I understand now why people play games. It's in my opinion one of the last safe spaces people can enjoy to be truly at peace with one self. It's not about powers or being the hero it's about being at peace. Video games give me something nothing else has given me. Ever since I have gotten my PS5. My life has become richer and fuller than ever before. I feel like I'm at home when I am playing at my PS5. I think video games can be an excellent opportunity to get dopamine without destroying yourself. It's incredibly cheap too. It doesn't harm anyone. And you don't get addicted compared to substance abuse. To me. It was the best decision ever to return playing games again.
Gaming isnt the problem , the problem is how you manage your time
video games are useless anyway, only good is bonding with people but games are design and default to be grind to be addicted to be slave to the game especially nowadays, need grind

that's the government agenda, keep people slave and be a zombie
16 hours is crazy. There’s a difference between a hardcore gamer and a full on addict. Congratulations on getting out of your addiction but you do realize you can play games without getting addicted. Most “hardcore”gamers play for about 4-5 hours a day, and most normal gamers play 1-3. You can find a middle ground
there is no middle ground when it comes to electronic games, the mind nature is to greedy to the senses especially to the eye
and we all know games are colorful and beautiful that's why it's addictive, that's why people come back even they play1 hour, it's either live in real life or be a slave to the government who created games
this whole video games is an iceberg, it's very deep topic
when you really see it clearly
games and other entertainment will keep people distracted to the truth that life is suffering that's why government work with people who invented games to make people ignorant to the truth, search 4 noble truth and meditate to be free from boredom and to know the truth
because life is default boring that's why so many entertainment to cover up and layer the truth

4800 days ago, I became a Dad. I’ve been playing video games with them since they were 5, and now that they’re teenagers, it’s one of the most reliable ways to get them to engage with me. We’re playing through the Danganronpa series (it’s a visual novel series, so most of the game play is dialogue and choices). We’re doing all the character voices and having an incredible time together. (That particular game also allowed me to have several very meaningful conversations about hope, despair, and the value of life) We go to arcades regularly and one of their favorite childhood memories was playing Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime together. Also, I’ve gotten to meet some of their friends because we like to stream Jackbox games and they invite their schoolmates. I’m extremely grateful for video games, and I’m glad that OP has found a path forward for themselves out of addiction… Just keep in mind that your experience isn’t everybody’s experience.

I just stopped playing after tbc ended. I noticed since then how demanding gaming actually is and i have barely touched the computer the last 4 months. I noticed right away when i tried Wow again that my priorities shifted slowly in a direction i did not like. So i simply stopped since i did not like what happend within my brain. Now i have played some singe-player games now and then but it kind of feel like i have to put a effort and energy to play so i dont engage often maybe 2 times a month. And i play around 30-60 minutes which is a cool feeling when you dont play so often. And it feel plenty enough before it becomes a chore or boring. Most games however are designed to be played a lot i realized as i forget bindings etc. I just gradually go back to older simpler games and enjoy that much more ! Games were better back in the days. Its exhausting having 100 buttons, 1000 items and systems like wtf. I dont need gaming in my life to be honest. But getting rid of it might be worse for me as i can get a little taste of gaming every now and then and be satisfied or offput rather than giving in and getting a brand new system and binge as most guys do after some time temptation and depression creeps in. If this works and i continue to enjoy games once in a while without hinder me irl i will continue as now. Maybe in future as i become a bit older i may just get rid of it depending how my life developes in other areas. I don't have cravings, rather i dread playing its a resistance rather, it feels like i have to force myself to play some. The better life is the less you game pretty much. I enjoy real life more as games wont satisfy anymore compared to the much deeper reality of life. Games missions tend to feel like chores and it feels very 2 dimensional like i have a hard time to get into it as i did before. Like how can it really compare to real life staring into pixels. I finally feel this real difference, 11 years ago it was the opposite for me. Hope someone found my thoughts interesting ,wish you all the best here at gq.

Otherwise and especially if the sitting area is stiff you can expect hemorrhoids.
I'm writing to you as someone who's been through it all as a gamer, if I was a parent I would try to teach my kid time management and not set any specific boundaries, if the time management is done right and they learn how to organize themselves they will naturally set up healthier boundaries.
But yes of course I would only interfere if it goes above 8, the interesting thing is that "gaming" itself might not even be the leading cause for glueing people, voice chats and the community surrounding it can be a bigger voidhole, or just surfing the internet mindlessly.
Most times playing with appropriate focus and relatively decently designed games will lend you satisfied and fulfilled for the day in 4-5 hours.
i only play video games 2 hours MAX, it's ok to play games but it's not okay to do it by instant gratification, only game once you do a task. Ex. exercising, going for a walk. reading a book, doing hw.
my life is like a video game
yes
Trying hard to beat the stage
16hrs a day??!! That wasn't gaming son... that was a straight up addiction.
I deleted steam from my computer, it will take some time to delete my steam account but I´m doing great whithout it
keep going Ivan!
Don't delete your steam account, just stop playing.
@@Phriffo it's been a long time since I deleted it and I'm doing great, I spend most of my time learning web development and playing chess as hobbie.
@@systemofadown1986 Great! That's much more productive. I also was a non-stop gamer until I realized that playing 7+ hours a day wasn't going to take me anywhere. I still play video games though, I am just not addicted to it.
I also started going to the gym, dropped my bad friends, got good friends I could grow with. Also started to code a year ago (hard but worth it). Life is hard but it's worth it! Hope you are great now!💪🏾
I need help with my computer management
try this
So what are you filming with mr. Parent Who watche's TV all day! 😎
No shit 16 hours a day too much
How is nobody talking about the fact that he counted those days??
Well he probably didn't count them after a while but he saved the date of when he chose to quit. So he has that written down somewhere and with that you can just Google how many days it's been since then. Easy.
So true lmao ive seen many alcoholics do this. 45 days no drink! Right before the relapse
How do you become aware of it?
Have a clock nearby
Bro you not ever do herion with addictive personality like that. Bro i still game and love it, it helped me beat my herion addiction. I still spend time with my family, take them out, play outside etc. I still work and clean my house. My wife loves that i play games because she knows how much they have helped me as a person. Dont act like games are the problem. You are.
one thing I appreciate of this short is not mocking or making fun of other people who do play video games.
Big L for you gaming is a blessing, just balance spending time with your family and gaming, my family games aswell just get then into gaming so they play games with you
Thank you for influencing us to not play video games, it really helps. Gaming can really be addictive and can waste our time, and sometimes we don’t even realize that. But you told us your story, and how it can really not benefit us. We only have one life, so don’t waste it, as your life is very much precious…
Video games aren't the issue, it's the Tim spent playing them that can be a problem
16 hours a day? That's basically every waking hour unless you just don't sleep or work!
I've been gamefree for a year now. And now that I've had time to sit down and think about stuff I realize how self-centered and selfish I was when I was gaming. I used to prioritize gaming over spending time with family and friends, and the only thing I cared about with my friends was gaming-related. I didn't care about them or what was going on in their lives, everything was about gaming. Being gamefree has taught to me listen to people and see value in what they have to say.
Me too, best to quit gaming.
That's like 11 years almost of no gaming
Blessed
Moderation is key to anything, but some people cant control themselves so do what you gotta do
It's why so many idiots are roaming the streets nowadays. Their parent's couldn't moderate their reproduction.
Might be a problem to you and not others. I choose to play a game from time to time. It’s what’s I like doing. There’s no point to life. I work, have a great career… and have no intention of being rich or working my ass off with zero free time. It means nothing in the end. I value my time with loved ones, I work to be home more
16 hours a day, that's just a you problem. Other than that, I would say 4 or even 5 hours a day is fine. Gaming is just like any other hobby. If you do it too much, it's bad. Quitting isn't really smart, because you are just going to replace those 4-5 hours with another hobby. Instead of that, just learn to manage your time like an adult and, of course, if you have a family or other responsibilities, then you get less time, but that doesn't mean you should just quit doing what you like.
Yeah 16 hours is insane
for most people 5-7 hours a day is enough to do everything else, if you need more time then you obviously cut it down from your free time. also 5 might be stretching it but 4 hours free time is not absurd what is absurd is you thinking that it is.
I'm not an american I have a job and i go to the gym 4 days a week, do everything else and sometimes i still have time to spare, not everyone is a dad with 5 jobs and 10 kids infact most people are like me
16 hrs?? Bro u good fam?
I only play 30 to 50 hours over 2 weeks 3.5 hours a day.
Gamin has increased some people’s intelligence like strategy games
Yea he is only talking about the addicted people and make it that its every gamer, my favorites genre is rts, as i found chess a bit less micro manching comapred games like men of war, games can have good health benefits
Hey guys! This is how I eliminated things that I love for no good reason. 😂😅 I was upset until I found it he's trolling.
Geez the closest thing to addiction I had is soda.
When I was 11 years old in 2019, I used to play a lot on my Xbox, but then COVID-19 came, and consequently, I kept playing more and more. At some point in 2021, I stopped and reflected on what I was doing with my life, and I learned one thing: live for today and plan for tomorrow, because we never know what will happen. Nowadays, I play around 4 hours a day. I found time between gaming, family, and school. For me, it's simple, but for some people, it's not. Sometimes, when I want to get an item in the game, I usually focus on trying to get it on weekends because I have more time to spend on the game.
Thanks for what you do
Thanks John!
Bro its hard to imagine me playing games for even 10 hours even on weekends it would just make me hate it
16 hours a day… yeah thats the problem. I play
1-2 hours at most and i think thats a alot!!! And i have family and need to provide for them!
I’m glad you mentioned that this is what’s best for you. I’m a gamer and when I was younger, gaming was a very big problem in my life that I didn’t deal with for quite some time. It wasn’t a problem due to the games themselves, but the way I was approaching them. I was having it be the center of my life with no room for anything else. Now, at 18 and starting uni, I still game. That’s because that’s what I’m trying for as my career. I turned my passion for games and turned it into something more productive by, instead of just playing, I’m writing content for my own games. I’m networking with as many people as I can in the industry. I’m going to uni to learn how to develop games. Gaming still takes up a massive amount of my attention, but in a way where it’s not just me sitting at a screen looking at the clock every now and then, but actually engaging with people about it. It’s even grown my family and I much closer, as they’re supportive of my career goals and talk with me about them.
I haven’t played video games in 2 weeks
omg what happened to the other two lessons I hope they're ok
You could have MUCH worse addictions bro. Games for me saved me from drugs and alcohol. Those were my true addictions. Everyones different. I dont really see how gaming itself could be that harmful to someone's life but thats just me. Gaming saved me from way worse.
Yeah but you simply traded one addiction for another. This is why people shouldn't get into drugs in the first place because if you do then you literally have to replace it with a separate addiction whether that be working non-stop or video gaming for copious amounts of time. I don't understand why people get into drugs when we are literally shown videos and see what it does to people on the streets as kids. I've never once thought "oh, heroine? Yeah, I'd love to try that. I saw how it fucked up all those homeless peoples lives and how it causes you to basically be a useless piece of shit. Sign me up!"
Good god. How did you even manage to game 16 hours a day? Like how did you even get anything done? The most ive spent over my life has been like 6 to 8 hours a day and that was when I was a child and even then it was not consecutive.
Im glad you managed to get away from 16 hours a day.
how not to solve a problem
I keep telling myself that I will play in moderation but every single time I open the game, hours go by and I end up regretting.
Yep them cravings to play videa gaems came back around when Jagex announced osrs was released on mobile. I couldnt handle the temption.
Me who never played high figh games because I can't afford 😂😂😂
my son is playing guitar for 12-14hours a day and my daughter is a bookworm with aorund 10 hours of reading a day, my wife sees no problem, since its not tv or gaming.. what i see, is addiction and fleeing
I have played video games for 25 years and have an addiction. Quit 4 months ago and did not realize how much time i have wasted
I used to read books, tend to my garden and talk to my friends and family for 8 hours a day. I was so foolish, since I quit I now have so much free time.
I play games a LOT. If I spend like 10-14 days without playing anything, doing other shit - especially snowboarding or hiking or camping or climbing or anything active - then I just completely lose the urge.
16 hours a day is insane. I only play 4 to 10 hours a week and I think that's a lot, but the key is balance 👍
Ive never been happier playing video games, it may seem like an addiction to you, but idgaf
Dont blame gaming, blame your poor self control. 16 hours a freaking day?!
I only play 2 to 3 hrs only for timepass and fun
Everything in moderation
This dude was an addict. Even streamers only play for 4-8 hours a day.
