Some bombs had a whistle on them which made the "oooooowwww" sound literally only to scare people on the ground. So it was real. Just like how WWIl planes were designed to be as loud as possible to scare your enemies on the ground.
@Maestro_ Dany Seen an interesting video about it, "Military Aviation Visualized" or something. The Sirens on the Stukas actually made the pilots more mad than they made the targeted ground personal.
@@Omnihil777 yup, the problem with the Jericho sirens was that they would sound even at regular cruising speed. So the pilots had to listen to it the entire way to their target, which would drive them nuts.
The reason for the horns on stukas was because the pilot was to focused on ground targets and aiming to keep track of airspeed as well in the dive.. the pitch of the horns was basically an air speed indicator for the pilot.
@@SirMike02 sorry, that’s not true. The siren only activated when the dive brakes were extended, so if you heard it while ‘cruising to target’ then you had much more immediate problems to worry about (like a probable imminent stall) than the sound itself. Whoever told you that was either making it up out of thin air or basing it on inaccurate computer games.

The pitch of the siren sound didn’t change appreciably without substantial changes in airspeed so it was not useful as an airspeed indicator in any meaningful sense. Also every pilot of every aeroplane had to monitor airspeed while diving on a target; Stuka pilots were just as capable of that as any other pilot and so didn’t need a weird siren indicator to help them. Also, if you think Stuka pilots were so stupidly transfixed on their targets that they couldn’t stop staring through the windshield, consider that the indicator of the angle of their dive was on a side panel of the cockpit canopy...

Funfact which you asked for: yes bomb whistled due to their fins and the propellers on the backside to activate the timers. but that whisteling can not be heared from directly underneith. rule of thumb: if you could hear the bombs whislte, you were mostly safe.

The propellers are used to arm the mechanical fuzes we still use them today and to provide provide power for electric fuzes depending upon of course configuration.

Not all bombs whistle when dropped, only ones equipped with whistles.
Bombs are made with whistles in order to strike fear into the enemy when dropped, but, in a case of a stealth attack, they are silent.
They work as the bomb drops by allowing a small volume of air to pass through a chamber; pushing it out at high speeds and making a sound.

By far my favorite bomber. They key is to always be flying nap of earth - so on air bomber spawns you first start side ways (or even backward spiraling) dive. If you position and angle your body correctly and defensively you can have 8-10 fifties on an enemy attacker 😮 And don't forget 1.5 second bomb delays on the 2000 lbers to give pursuers a 'nice surprise'!

I also tried using this recently in ground rb. I like taking heavy bombers for the memes, but the defensive armament and the 8 mine payload looked sick as hell. it quickly became apparent that the thing handles like a skyscraper, to the point where it is just straight hard to make any form of coarse correction to drop bombs accurately. ngl would rather fly a g5n. I also noticed the bombs are inaccurate as hell. They hit nowhere near where you drop, and not consistently either like a Catilina, just sprays them all over the place. overall, the thing is doo doo and is only good at bombing bases in air rb, and even then it cant outclimb the fighters, nor be evasive on the deck.
That's why you gotta just pick a part of the map and carpet bomb the hell outta it, or you could ask teammates where they want an airstrike orcarpet bomb
OMG that assault on the castle though. Chatting up the enemies all the while. I know they couldn't hear it but that was some of the craziest WT gameplay I've ever seen. Also I hope everything is fine with Lola and the kid.

The Privateer is a rare plane in WT but I think its underappreciated because those blisters are so useful.
Also, I really like the transitions between matches like the classic Batman scene transitions, even with the Batman scene transition music. Love it.

Finally Phly playing my favorite naval aircraft in late WWII. PB4Y is based of B-24 Liberator but it lack the high altitude performance of the B-24 and one of the first large aircraft that was equipped with radar for night runs

Not all bombs were equipped with whistles, but they still all made noise as they fell due to air displacement (just not the famous whistling sound). And Congrats on being a dad!
With the bomb whistle, only SOME bomb types in the wars had those. Mostly for psychological warfare. Only a few countries used it and at the same time only a few bombs used it so it was actually fairly uncommon to hear the whistle. Especially if you lived near Dresden.
When the bomb is dropped from the airplane, the velocity of the bomb goes on increasing due to gravity until it reaches its terminal velocity. As the bomb approaches towards the ground, the pitch increases and thus the “kooouuuueeee” sound.

Actually bombs don't actually make sound from what I researched but the German put a whistle in the bomb for fear tactics like the ju87, not sure about other nations though
yes the website that that passage is from mentions thats for the bombs that actually had whistles on them to make sound. not all bombs did. I actually think they should remove all bomb sound effects from war thunder (unless they just add bomb variants with whistles for fun if you want) would give high altitude bombers a little more of a chance in ground RB rather then seeing all the tanks flee your bombing spot because they hear the bombs 3 miles up falling on them...

The whistle is there from wind passing through areas in the bombs, some bombs were designed to always make the whistle as a scare tactic.

7:36 there's been a lot of that lately. It's almost like it's not rendering vehicles for players at random. I had an instance yesterday while playing 11.0 tanks on the new russian city map where i had an abrams pull up right in front of me and fire. He was nowhere to be found. Then i switched to thermal and pop there he is. Oh, and before anyone says anything i have a ryzen 5600x with 64GB of ram and a GTX1060 6GB. My system is up for it all day.

Bombs in-and-of-themselves did not produce a whistling noise, however, there were "terror" bombs (not an official name) modified to produce the whistling whilst falling to induce fear in troops on the ground similarly to Jericho sirens on a Stuka dive-bomber.
The whistle was popularised by cartoons, but was not as prevalent in standard bombs as most media would portray.
In War Thunder they're used as a game mechanic obviously.

For accurate bombing from altitude you absolutely HAVE to make sure you're flying completely level.

Congrats... The sound that it makes is the shell cutting threw wind, i was an artilliry Sargeant major back in 1989 in Angola. Usually wr first fire the G5's, then the mortars and the the vuurpyl. It shoots 24 rockets in 21 seconds and usually after all the rockets are out you would hear the rockets cry

The timer on bombs is a little propeller like screw that would turn as it falls through the air. When that screw stops is when it detonates. The timer for the bomb is tied to how long that screw is turning after it was dropped. This is also where the sound comes from.
