Michelin: Less rubber
Goodyear: A big ball of rubber with magnets!
with contact surface from a point to a small circle depending on infation.. so the stupedity of this project was clear to everyone from the bat🤷
@@theoteddy9665 normal tires contact surface is anywhere from a thin line to a thick rectangle, depending on inflation. A ball tire making contact at a single point wouldn't offer enough grip but I'm curious why you see a circle of any size as being more detrimental than a rectangle with the same surface area...
Depending on the design of the ball tires, they could still dial in the amount of surface area needed to acheive the right balance of grip and rolling resistance. Theoretically, depending on the manufacturing requirements, it may be sealed well enough to maintain roughly the same circular contact area throughout the life of the tire hence would need to be engineered specific to the vehicle. The main thing to worry about would be tread squirm and the consistency of tread effectiveness if the tire's rotation has fully spherical freedom.
James spent more time talking about his love of dandelions than he did explaining the Kuhmo tire lol
Teacher- How old are you?
Me- 43 years younger than Post Malone
@@powerthrashingdeath he’s 26 which means the person who wrote the original comment is roughly -17 years old

Can we have science garage back???
Actually, the Michelin "Uptis" tires where originally called "Tweel". The creator Steve Cron came up with the idea in the early 90's and worked for Michelin as one of their engineers. They had many designs over the years, and I believe the original idea had major issues with speed and balancing issues, and the compound used between the tread, and the wheel itself had issues in cornering, and high speeds. They had a lot of videos out there with the tires, mostly for tractors and vehicles that don't have a need to go fast, or corner sharp with vehicle weight being a factor. It's not a bad idea, they just need to perfect the compound for each vehicle, and reduce the price where it'll be a contender to our standard pneumatic tires.
You guys are the whole reason i now love and play the DIRT videogame series! Keep it up!
4:14 Yes and you measure time with Post Malone lol.
And he uses the Disneyland monorail to refer to shapes of cars
That's because before there was Post Malone, there was all the time before him which is called Pre Malone.
"that's as strong as spider's silk, the strongest material in nature next to Nolan's chest hair" I love how they keep roasting each other on their videos.
Thank you James and D list you make this day actually kind of worth it
That kid reacted to winning a Corvette like he won live tickets to his third favorite band.
Looked like he would have been happier if he'd won a BMW 3 series. You know, the ugly squished ones like girly bois like to drive to a cheap bar with.

Great video! Love learning about this type of stuff from who can explain it on a level that I can understand.
James: "Just like the earth, the tire is round"

The earth is actually flat because america wants to invade jupiter for oil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #savepluto

Really good guys, thanks for the content and keep it going!
You’ve probably already seen one but a mecanum wheel is pretty weird as well but they are easier to create than those spherical tires and you don’t need any futuristic magnet configurations to control them.
"The power of triangles" ROTARY BOYS CAN I GET AN F IN THE CHAT

Some more of the science please.
Thanks again
They did a great job, the car got clear, we saw it move around, amazing! 😂😂😂

"Black circle rubber" James is a big brain lmao
What about when a journalist asked Juha Kankkus for a rally in Finland in 1999 which tires he had and Juha And Juha answered " black round pirelli"
Thx for that video. Awesome stuff.

I see people continue to take extra time and energy to write and say 'dad joke' than saying and writing what it is, a pun. One syllable and five characters shorter.
I can confirm, shape memory alloys are in fact magic. I'm studying to be a materials engineer and I literally just learned about shape memory alloys today in class. That exact graph from 11:11 was one that my professor used lol
I just learned about them recently to!! SO COOL! Do you know of any good online resources to learn material engineering? It's something my little brother is super interested in.
Yup! More stuff like this please 😊
Seeing the spherical tire I realize I had the exact same idea as a kid. Use magnets so it doesn't have to rely on a solid link, as a sphere can't have one without interrupting the surface
I just did a science fair project making an airless tire, this video would have been helpful about 3 weeks ago lol, cool vid
Those ball tires looked better attached to the "futuristic" Audi in I, ROBOT
Great. Now I want super advanced magic tires for my rustmobile.
The dell sticker over the apple logo on your Mac book is hilarious!

To answer your question, yes. I do want more of these sciency vids. Very coo

Fun fact: the internet was originally called the “arpanet”
@@JoseEstrada-dm4wt between 1992 and 1996 it was called arpa instead of darpa because the research they did was very broad
Na dawg that is wrong. ARPANET stands for Advanced research project agency network and was used for communications between the United States security and some universities. It is like a predecessor to the Internet. And ik this cause I legit had to study this in school
Those triangle wheels actually seem like a good idea for snowy and icy roads
Another thing you can love about dandelions is you can make a really good tea out of them
Great show guys!
"Dell", great placement 😂
There is like a zero percent chance we get sphere magnet tires.
@@ethanleno5259 imagine if you drive over a big magnetic the safety would be so far away from getting approved.
@@silverhawk534 There are lots of issues with a sphere tire, but I'm not sure driving over a big magnet is one of them :P
@@IrocZIV yeah I know but it if you drive over anything metal it will pick it up.
@@ethanleno5259 Also imagine how much wasted energy goes into just making your car float. Battery dies and your car collapses? Awesome. If electromagnets weren't used then it will be next to impossible to make it stable. Plus the gain of any extra longevity is probably destroyed by the insane cost to manufacture.

The Michelin airless tires are something they've been advertising for 20 years already. They better start producing them, I think they're the only ones on this list that I can't wait to test.
