I have an outdoor kitchen...I had ants get on my stove... I used this method and no more ants.. I put the jug on top of the stove in the back where they were coming in...
    Viola! No more ants...
In stead of leaving the jugs lying around I decided to hand them in plastic grocery bags in each area of my garden ... I rarely see any anymore....but when I do see new ones I make a new solution and put it out..
This is such a great idea.. thanks so much for sharing it with us..

I use oatmeal, I put it in the food processor to make it small, but not dust and the ants love it, you can see that they start to pick it up immediately, but to be sure, I do detective and look for the nest and put there also. What happens is that they eat it and they do not know what fiber is, it expands in their stomach and they die.

Great. I did something similar in a small bowl on my deck. They just wouldn't stop. It really helped. But I like the bottle idea much better. Some ant got on my last year and thought I was dinner. In about a minute, my one are had whelps all over it. In about 2 minutes it was burning. I was under attack. Never dealt with that here in 30 yrs. Ran in, rinsed my arm off and rubbed wintergreen alcohol on it. I felt so much better. When I came in for good I put some Melaleuca cream on my arm and never saw another whelp the next morning.
Using a similar mixture to this one, I stopped seeing them in the house as much. They were starting to take over. Store products didn't last long, may even seemed to just feed them. I was getting worried. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

Maybe somebody already commented about this but Terro ant killer at HDepot I have been using for 25 years. Nothing but borax and sugar in a liquid suspension and proper ratio.. The point is to have them take the liquid back to the nest, so you can sit and just watch them drink for several minutes until they have all they can carry and then they head back to the nest alerting the other ants where the liquid is. So all the worker ants come one day and take all of the tiny amount of liquid I put out. The next day there are only a few confused stragglers that don't know what to do but the whole colony is killed through dehydration IF they get back to the nest. Terro obviously has perfected the ratio. Killing them in your bottle eventually alerts the ants that they should not go there. One tiny bottle of Terro ($4) would last for years controlling ants in the house. In the garden I pick a dry day and put out some so that it will not contact the soil in the container, once they find it (I watch their path to the plant but anywhere at the base works) all the ants from that colony will be destroyed. Works with any sweet eating ant.

I hear you...we "must" protect our bees! I would use a small container from sour cream....drill small holes around it and place mixture in there! No bees can get in!! Even drilling small holes in this bottle would work better so no bees get in!

This is such a great way to put down this solution to treat ants. I am so grateful to Khang for sharing. We bought some borax on line and I didn't know how to put it down without my dog eating the stuff. If anyone ever says Sluggo isn't toxic to animals don't believe them. Unless you want to spend the night with a salivating dog in the vet. hospital. This is such a great solution. And thanks for the insight on the aphids too. The comment were very interesting to read as well. Thanks for all those thoughts expressed here and all the extra info. Jnentti.

I did this a few years ago (ants were invading my outdoor box turtle habitat). I was concerned that beneficial insects might become victims. I don’t recall what the size was, but I did some research and ended up using canning jars and using screen mesh - of a size that lets ants in, but keeps bees (etc.) from getting in. PS, you can do a GOOGLE search to find out the correct proportions for the boric acid and sugar.

Believe it or not, Borax is not deadly for humans. You can take an eighth of a teaspoon a day, dissolved in water as supplement. Then the boron becomes the beneficial form for us when it hits our stomach, when property dissolved in water, and not in large quantities of course; enough is enough, and more is NOT better. Yes, that’s good old-fashioned laundry Borax, it contains some trace minerals we need. Just know that it’s not going to hurt you if used the same funnel for cooking or if you ingested some. It could irritate your throat if you tried to consume it dry, or took too much, but in a glass of water, 1/8 tsp., not tablespoon, is just fine. I find hot water works best. And yep, I’m alive still, though I haven’t used it as consistently as other people do.
People get confused by this, saying, “omg, it’s ant poison!,” but it may shock them to learn that we actually have a different physiology than ants (not to mention we are so, so, so much bigger than they are!)... and any other species, too, as they have different physiologies from us. We’re actually not physiologically interchangeable after all. That’s why we have to be careful what we feed our pets, but it also means that everything that poisons them doesn’t necessarily poison us:)

Thank you so much for this ant trap. I have noticed that I am getting a lot of ants and aphids on some of my beans and leafy green crops. I wanted something that would not harm the beneficial insects in my garden but be effective against those two pests. Hopefully this will do the trick. I believe slugs are getting them at night as well and I plan to use beer traps. Any suggestions for slugs that is organic and less harmful to pollinators?
