- "The Deer's Cry", attributed to St Patrick, is known by several names: "The Breastplate of St Patrick" and "Lorica" to mention two. It is a beautiful prayer celebrating a God who lives with his children, guiding them, sheltering them, strengthening them. A God who is with us and in us through his Creation. In 1994 Irish composer Shaun Davey put a section of the Breastplate to some wonderful music in his CD "The Pilgrim". It is wonderfully sung by Rita Connolly. If you like Celtic music you will treasure this CD. This video attempts to enhance Shaun Davey's music with some relevant images.
I listen to it before my transplant operation and think of all who are part of this event. The grace of Christ be with us all.
This is my theme music as I try to get up at 5:30 a.m. to get the six kids ready for school.

This is a beautiful rendition of the Breastplate. It takes me back to the days when I spoke the Breastplate aloud every day as my morning devotional.
Whenever I doubt my faith or question the existence of God, I listen to this prayer and it humbles me

I first heard this beautiful prayer from the inspirational Bishop David O’Connell’s funeral. I was moved and have been wanting to learn it since. Coincidentally, a wonderful priest sent me this video on St. Patrick’s Feast Day. This morning I arise singing this prayer. May God strengthen our faith in Christ today until our last day 🙏

My husband had a liver transplant over 20 yrs ago, I went to the hospitals chaple and prayed silently. I just said dear God please keep my husband safe. Now at thus moment ge has suffered two strokes & fell in the hospital. When going into a nursing for rehabilitation he had another fall & broke his hip. That was six weeks ago & we are all hoping for another miracle. Anyone reading this include us in your prayers. Thanks.

I am touched at the base of my very being.
I first heard this at a retreat and have listened to it almost every morning. I traveled to Australia and New Zealand and the three churches I visited were named St. Patrick. I can only believe this beautiful prayer is reminding me how much I need God in my daily life. The video touches every part of daily life that reminds us what is really important. Wish all people could view and take in this message.

The singer is Rita Connolly. Beautifully sung. The best I have heard and I have heard quite a few others. She was born in Dublin. You will find her on CZcams.

I find this prayer moving and powerful. I prayed it everymorning for 2 years and feel called to pray it again....
I was introduce to this on a retreat a during Lent and it touched the very core of me soul and spirit. The words and music are so powerful and the images on the video so well chosen. I have played it everyday since. It lifts me and gives me strength everyday to keep my eyes on Jesus.... something I sometimes struggle to do! Thankyou so much.

Knowing the power of music and faith, I am glad to have had such grace in my life and love, it was songs like this, and people like my Priests, who taught me to seek and study my Spiritual self.
and now I know where I stand, both in this life and in my soul's path...thank you for putting this up so I can be reminded of the deepening power of faith

Since I 'stumbled' upon the album, "The Pilgrim" I've listened to Rita sing this prayer, and prayed it many times over.
Especially after September 11, 2001, listening to and praying this prayer has helped move me forward more times than I can remember. Such a beautiful gift!

Every St. Patrick's Day, and on the days leading up to that day, I play this and share with friends who may not know it.
A lady approached me after our 6pm Mass today and asked me if I could sing this song at her funeral (God knows when). I literally have no idea of this song and it’s tune. I searched it and here I found it. Now I’m crying, listening to this song.
Hi Savirio, glad you found it moving. I often hear a congregation praying a "Hail, Mary" or a "Prayer to St Michael the Archangel", or singing the "Salve Regina" after Mass, all great prayers. But if you are going to say a prayer after Mass then make it "The Breastplate" which reminds us that when we leave the church Christ is with us and in all around us.

This sums up all that is of the Patrician Heritage that we have at our College. It will be very heart breaking when the school finishes at the end of the year. One sad day it will be. This song will always be a constant reminder of what once was.

There is no doubt the Irish have punched above their weight in relation to spreading the Good News, and I say that as an Australian with Irish heritage. Your mother must have been a woman of great faith, for this she was blessed with a peaceful death. You have a wonderful and inspiring memory of her passing. May she rest in peace.

As a Patrician Brother. One of the first things I did when made Principal of our Primary was to have this prayer said each morning before we attended class. This tradition has been taken up by all our schools in Australia now. It is also a very large Part of our Celtic Spirituality as Patrician Brothers? Lots of years ago, I bought 'The Pilgrim' CD in a flee market without knowing what it was and without listening to it first. Back home I listened and discovered a treasure! St-Patrick's Breastplate is still my all time favourite prayer and I regularly sing it myself when I'm down. It's a very powerful prayer!
Very similar to my own experience. Shaun Davey should be very proud. Anyone who likes Celtic music needs to listen to "The Pilgrim".

Yes, the prayer does seem very popular with people. It is said daily in our Patrician Brothers schools here in Sydney. I think we just like knowing that our God is wonderful and is with us in our lives.
