In this video, I review the r36s Hanheld Game Console.
Thanks to the Ark OS 2.0 system and the hard work of the Rk3326 gaming community, this system runs like a charm right out of the box. It has two SD card slots, so it i very easy to add more games. If you do need to update your cores, it can be done over wifi with the dongle. Because Ark OS is a linux system running Emulation Station, you also have access to many native ports of pc games.
It runs everything from NES to Playstation easily. N64 and Dreamcast have only minor stutters with default settings and they can be fixed by editing the retroarch settings and changing cores for some games. PS1 seems to be running flawlessly. I also had a good experience with the Arcade games and CPS3 content.
An unexpected suprise was the fact that Nintendo DS games ran smoothly also.
I rate this system a 9/10 and the only negatives are the lack of wifi, bluetooth, and HDMI out. I should note that you can add a wifi dongle to the system to add wifi.

I've been thinking about getting a miyoo plus sometime. If these consoles all had HDMI out, wifi, and Bluetooth they would be super awesome!

I have one coming today and I was curious how the PSP plays. For me personally, any handheld that can play at least PSP is a deal maker for me. I'm going to install "Ultimate Ghost N Goblins" for the PSP. If this thing can run that, OMG! 🤯 😂 Thanks for sharing.
PSP actually runs perfectly as far as I can tell!
It seems to run psp flawlessly. Remember to change the aspect ratio to core provided so it isn't stretched. It has ppsspp by default, but when I updated it broke that, but added the retroarch cores that work just as well.

the gta game for the psp that comes with the device doesnt run too well, it cant keep 30 fps at all,.@@richardwadereviews
I have had issues with that game before too, even on more powerful systems. It's strange.
Cool device but in 40 minutes I didn't really see how it runs psp (yes, there was one simple game), ps1 ( one 2d game) or dreamcast. I'll leave a like and hope for more next time.
PSP seems to run perfectly. Dreamcast works well, but it has stutters occasionally, so i think it may need some tweaks in the core. I will definitely update the firmware and make another update soon, When I do, i will be sure to include all of the systems.

The RK3326 is known to handle "light" PSP, Dreamcast, N64 and Sega Saturn games, but will definitely struggle with games that utilize their original systems more. everything up to 16 bit should run just fine, same for PSone games as it's emulation is not as demanding as the other systems in it's generation. GameCube and PS2 will technically start, emulation speed is pretty much in the "unplayable" category.
Upon further testing, Dreamcast works well if you change the emulator core to the run32 version! psp runs perfect as it is. ps1 has been fine as far as I can tell.

Thanks for making this video. I ordered one and it is on its way. Btw: you might want to update the firmware which was released recently. How do you make the Sega Saturn/ Sega 32x work? I saw someone make a video using Sega Saturn on it. Also, you should totally do more game tests. Especially with more demanding games like PSP/NDS/DC/Saturn/N64. Did you do the firmware update? I have not updated to the newest ark OS yet, but i know you can just copy the roms into the existing folders. That might work by default even without the update. I am waiting on a sd card reader to come in, but I can try it when it gets here!

@@MOSTARTdotCOM I'm going to try out an ethernet adapter on it also next week! Some wifi adapters don't work with it, so you may have to try a few different ones. This is an issue with all rk3326 devices.
I recently updated it, but not before i did this video. I plan to make another video about that. As far as i can tell, the emulators for Saturn and 32x should be there already, but you will have to add some roms for them. I also got the Portmaster ports working. I will be sure to do more demanding systems in the follow up video!
The r36s looks like an upgrade of the r35s but only in the ergonomics and the battery door, the r36s has ddr3 that operates with 1.5 volts and have 800-2133 MTps and the r35s ddr4 1.2 volts and 2133-3200 MTps and means that r36s will have more latency and less of battery time. The brand is Data Frog, the problem with the r35s was that copied almost every aspect of the powkiddy rgb20s and they had to change the console to the r36s to keep selling without legal issues. the battery in both models is 3200 not 3500 mah
False advertising. R35s and R36s mounts 2x4Gb DDR3 SK Hynix H5TQ4G63AFR-RDC. Also the only one RK3326 (that it's a RK3326S really) device with DDR4 is the XU10: except from that device all the RK3326 based mounts DDR3/DDR3L chips

How does this thing compare to other similar products, like the Miyoo Mini and the Ambernic RG35XX? There's apparently a bunch of similar handhelds like this out there, all around the same price range. I'd like to get one, but I want to know for sure which one is objectively the best choice.
It is better than both of those, but it is not better than the rg35xx plus. the rg35xx plus is more expensive though. There are many devices with the rk3326 chipset and they should perform similarly. The miyoo mini doesn't have analog sticks, so that may make a difference to you.
I have heard the 35xx has better buttons and d-pad though.

Unfortunately, this one does not have that capability. I recommend the rgb30 for that or maybe the sf2000 that I reviewed.
Is there a way to safe power off thru the menu or can you just long press power button with bricking it?
You can hit start and shutdown from here. The long press will also work though. Kepp in mind, that with retroarch, you have to exit the game to preserve game saves.
Are there any 4/3 handhelds that have larger screens than 3.5? Not looking for widescreen.
The rgb30 has a 4 inch screen! I am going to be getting one within the next two weeks and i will review it on the channel. It is a 720p square screen, so it is a little strange, but it makes it perfect for a wide variety of content.
I think also the anbernic rg405m has 4:3 screen that is 4 inches.
This looks similar to the xu10.

That is actually the exact same chipset and will run arkOS or EmuElec also! It should perform exactly the same. I can see that the xu10 does not have a battery door, but it probably wouldn't be too hard to open it to replace the battery if needed.
Does it let you use the analog sticks on the snes and sega genesis games?
Yes, you can use either, but it doesn't feel very good to me to do that.
@@richardwadereviews I have a Nintendo ds but I hate the control pad on it because it is so small and hard to do diagonal movement. On my pc I use an Xbox controller so I think the analog sticks will feel better.

can you dump the operating system sd card to internet archive?
I am waiting on an SD card reader to come in right now. Once I get it, how do I go about doing that? Also, there are two different SD cards on the system. One is the Operating System and one contains the roms. I am sure the OS could be dumped, however the roms might have copyright issues. It is the standard ArkOS operating system for rk3326 systems that it is running, so the same OS for the rg351P will work for this device. It is freely available. There are versions of EmuElec that will work on it also.
If you want to check SNES mode 7, just play F-ZERO.
Does this have the first 3 resident evil games??
It's hard to say because every distributor puts different games on the games card. You can add your own PlayStation roms. You just have to rename the extension from the normal .bin or .iso to .pbp to get into recognize them. You don't actually have to convert the file type, just change the extension. That being said, I believe mine had at least one of them on it.

can you play it without battery but you have it plugged in?
Yes, but it will shorten the battery life if you do that. The battery is replaceable though!
The bumpers, the face buttons, and the D pad feel good to me. Maybe I just have bad taste.
I like the d pad and face buttons, but the back buttons make my hands cramp when I have to use them often, like playing Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast. By the way, I found that if you change the emulator to RetroRun32 on the Dreamcast, it actually works perfectly. I plan to do a follow up video with the best settings for each system soon.
@@richardwadereviews so I have a problem with a few MAME games but I can’t change out the emulator. Technically it says mame 2003. And that’s an emulator I think so armored police batrider I can’t play on this until I learn how to download ROMs I guess also Sega mega drive ranger X, which is a awesome game. I can’t change out the emulator to play that either. I wonder if I pick up a USB type C Wi-Fi adapter if I can update the system that will do anything.
Hello! I missed this comment before, but if you change the emulator to final burn alpha it can run a lot of things better. Sometimes different versions of mame run different things better.

This was a weird one. They have a lot of people slapping their name on the boxes. There is even a Data Frog and Powkiddy version! They are all the same hardware and manufacturer though.

I am sure it is capable of it if a linux emulator exists for the system. i gave it away to a friend, so i can't test it.

see this then, but basically every cheap dongle I have tried has worked on these systems. They run linux, so the compatibility keeps growing.

You can add them to the folders and they should come up after that. They probably stopped including them since they aren't perfect on it.

For PSP did you notice if it came with Star Wars battlefront games?
The one I got did not, but the games aren't really consistent between the different makers of the console. Some of them have larger SD cards in them also, with more games. The good news is that you can add roms to it, so you would just have to find them and copy them to the psp folder on the sd card.

XU10 is better for dreamcast and saturn fyi.
It's the exact same hardware, so it could just be that the xu10 is actually configured with the right cores out of the box.

@@timmyd463229 i had issues connecting with wifi until after i updated it. I actually used a usb-c to ethernet adapter to update using the built in update. It performs much better, but the update did break standalone emulators. The alternative is working great now though.

It can use a usb wifi dongle in the OTG port, but not all of them work with it. I am thinking about trying out an ethernet adapter on it also.

Also, anything with the rk3326 processor will perform just like this. It's all about the feel of the hardware to decide which is better for you.

So I randomly bought all of the devices you asked about within the past few month. My personal opinion is that r36s is best between these names. My only issue with r36s is trigger button loudness.
