Given that Josephine was in fact 6 years older than Napoleon, to match Phoenix, who is also a good 20 years too old for the part, they would have needed a 55 years old actress but then again its a US film so we can't expect any semblance of historical accuracy.
That s what I think too.... a burger king movie .
Or split it into two and cast another actor for part 1
Who'd expect a child from a 55 y/o woman?
The 1987 TV Series "Napoleon and Josephine" got it right, with an American Actor as Napoleon, Armand Asante, who really looked like young Napoleon; and gorgeous Jacqueline Bisset as Josephine, who looked the right age in all scenes. Except, of course, that the real historical Josephine became an ugly ruckled hag in her last years, and Bisset just could not look ugly when she was acting a "dying old Josephine", causing then a historical inaccuracy.
it’s typical Hollywood sexism. Aging down women under the assumption that audiences can stomach an older man but not an older woman. Happens all the time :(
Kirby is phenomenal
Vanessa deserves a nomination for this role. All that repressed passion he has for him, the elegance, the pain for not have an heir, only Vanessa could have portrayed it. And in the extended version it will be a masterpiece, will be over all based in the daily life of this marriage, we'll can see there To Vanessa much more.
Well done Vanessa. You played the hell out of your role. Couldn’t have chose a better person. Exceptional my darling ❤

Oscar incoming, Van Kirby👊
I was waiting for her to say "with one of these I can get as many of those as I want."
Ah yes, so empowering…
She still got divorced for younger stuff 🤣

He only remarried for reproductive purposes. If you read into it, it’s pretty clear he still loved her. Or lusted for her. Whatever you wanna call it.
You can tell bro was tryin real hard not to look down😂😂
@@localshithead7430 Oh I know, he even admitted it on St Helena that he regretted divorcing her. He did love Marie-Louise, but she was not Josephine.
I still am correct on that he went for younger stuff 😉
Joséphine was way older than Napoleon plus Joséphine, she’s such a great kisser.
I hope there will not be a narrative throughout the film "behind every great man there is a great woman" "YOU ARE NOTHING WITHOUT ME" - okay
Me encanta verte otra vez alanna

It looks AMAZING
Academy, can I ask you a favor? Who wrote the piece that feauters the first meeting of Napoleon & Josephine? Thank you.
Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie, dite Joséphine de Beauharnais is first wife of Napoléon Bonaparte 🇨🇵
Cool 👌🏼
I recommend reading Sandra Gulland's trilogy about Josephine. Tells much more about her history than any movie. Eventually, you can watch mini series Napoleon and Josephine from 1987.
Thanks I was looking for a book about Josephine, although I had read the Kate Williams biography a few years ago.
@@francinegranville5346Vanessa Kirby has a great potential but she would be better in the role of Pauline Bonaparte
She looks like Lady Gaga and it's funny because Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga will also pair up for Joker 2.
Vanessa is way more talented than the pretentious man you’re talking about
@@Vipashayana.?????? Lmao
@@Vipashayana.don’t disrespect Joaquin Phoenix like that

Everyone knows that
I'm sorry but I didn't see that...The tensions between the two were so overplayed that all we saw was mutual hatred, boredom, violence, fights... I .don't know if she did... but we definitely don't see "what she saw in him". Phoenix overplayed the weird creepy cold guy with juvenile residues of the Joker, which made the most unrealistic Napoleon I've ever seen. No way any french would have followed such a cold and boring man ; we never see any heartwarming moments or even camaraderie with his troops... This film is just a depressing, cynical mess trying to make a point about the "absurdity" of Napoleonic Wars by not explaining them at all and presenting Napoleon and Josephine as maladjusted freaks.
You can blame the zeitgeist of media depicting capable leading men as cold, emotionally crippled sociopaths. We need more depictions of men as warm or charismatic, or emotionally intelligent, people who you could actually see drawing people to them and having room for depth.
Nice movie
She's in everything it seems.
Can’t complain
Because she's exceptional
Minha boa surpresa do cinema: Vanessa Kirby 😊

@@oXRaptorzXo Actually he wasn't. He had a Polish mistress and married the Austrian Emperors daughter. While Josephine was his first wife, the director took this story and amplified it to fictionary levels.
His last words included- France, Army and Josephine
In their early marriage, Napoleon wrote rather erotic letters to Josephine begging her to come and see him in Italy. They were romantic letters but bordered on desperate. He had affairs after he learned she had an affair. He only divorced her because she couldn't get pregnant. It's not historically accurate to say she wasn't important to him. She was. He loved her. @@africanlipplateandbonenose3223
His letters to Josephine says otherwise
When she was a kid a fortune teller told her she'd be more then a queen. Napoleon was warned if he ever left her he would lose it all. Hum. Technically she wasn't even french but a Creole from the Carribean french colonies.
What a Masterpice 👉 Napoleon from Ridley Scott. 📽❤️👌 Thank you so much wonderful Moviemaker.👍🎬 🇺🇲 I love this History Movie! ✌️
A burger king movie for us....🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵
She is so elegant and beautiful.
The divorce scene alone ought to get Vanessa nominations. All of the emotions were there and completely.
The most beautiful woman for a beautiful part.
Yes . I think she looks much better with brunette hair .

What a nice, healthy couple. 😊🤭🤗
The more i learn of Josephine the less I like her.
Once again, they talk without knowing. Napoleon never was brutal with his wife. When you have to play historical figure it's a shame to not be on point.
Release date please
Why you didn't show the dance with Alexander? 😠
This movie is so good I hope they have a Bill and Ted Easter egg or a post credit scene with them in it
Is there any truth to the rumors surrounding the animated feud between cast members Vanessa Kirby and Tina Louise on the "Back To Gilligan's Island" TV movie set.
She's the one that whispered the idea of re-establishing slavery in the colonies, to his husband.
Wasn't she a marvelous person ?
Because, yeah, slavery was abolished since 1794 in the French Republic and its colonies, then, long before UK did...
She actually was from a long run slavist family, friend whith almost every plantation owners in the French Antilles.
Funny how this movies tries to make her a progressive figure.
Just saw this. As ALWAYS, Vanessa absolutely crushed it. She's such a terrific actress. The story of Napolean and Josephine is simply too epic to tell in a single film. But I enjoyed it. The scenes at Waterloo were excellent. And Vanessa and Joaquin were both fantastic. Vanessa is one of those rare actors where I'll go see a film, even if not particularly interested in it, JUST because she's attached to it. That's unusual. But ever since I saw her play Princess Margaret on The Crown, I can't not see her work.

didn't all of Josephine teeth rot out?
Movie fucked up the timeline of her death, Napoleon was on the first Island when he learned of her death and secluded himself in his room for days...the movie has him finding out after he lands in France

Josephine's character is just a much better looking version of me tbh
I love Vanessa Kirby but she is MISCAST. Josephine was older than Napoleon. That dynamic is completely eliminated here because Joaquin is 15 years older than Vanessa and looks 25 years older!
Nah, she was perfectly cast, it was Joaquin that was too damn old for the role. He’s 49 and Napoleon died age 51 so he’s really only acceptable for the role if the movie was about the last few years of his life.
And she's a great kisser
Will be a shame if this turns out to be some pandering feminist spin on reality.
Meaning? If you'd pick up a real history book you'd see Napoleon was actually pretty progressive for his time. On top of having POC generals and commanders in his army (yes they were real), he gave women quite a few rights. To sum it up: as long as they weren't dependent on a man, they could vote, own property even with male relatives, had the right to divorce and other rights. While he still restricted women from holding public office and enlisting in the military, women still enjoyed more freedom in France than US women did a whole century for the 19th Amendment came to pass.

Are we sure Josephine wasn’t black?
😂
It wouldn't matter who played her - this is not a documentary. It's just another Hollywood "historical drama" - they're always more fiction than fact.
@@CharleyGurlIt would matter, on the contrary. If all this woke bullshit wouldn’t matter, then why the hell did they cast a black actress to play Ann Boleyn ?

As a political commentary after the 2023 elections in Poland!!!😎
Maybe in Holland too? Who knows ?
Yeah she was great till napoleon dumped her.😂
Wrongly casted movie
What was her role again? Why is she even there? All she did was leach off Napolean (I'm talking about the historical figure not the actress btw).
She was higher nobility and got Napoleon into the rooms and with people he would never have without her. Just read about her trust you’ll learn a lot.
Did she even help with his battle plans tho? I think not
@@brooketryon228 She never needed to of course not. Her skill was her connection. You don't think Napoleon just did everything himself without someone to point him in the direction of the people to help him promminence. She knew how to big him up the higher ups and get them to trust him, cause of his minor nobility (which mattered a lot back then).
As much as I despise the twisting of narrative for girl power modern audiences, in this case Josephine was actually key to opening the doors to the elites that held the keys for Napoleon to be even eligible for higher office and command
She looks better with brunette hair .
All women do.
Marilyn Monroe is the only blonde who can compare with a raven beauty...but that's merely the exception proving the rule.
And Norma Jean wasn't a true blonde
This movie is a disgrace. I want my money back, and two hours of my life wasted watching this crap back.. and also I want someone somehow to wipe out my memory of this trash.
Phoenx is a complete ridiculous miscast for the personage of Napoleon, too old for young Napoleon, to skinny for old Napoleon, and that look of a sycopath that does not fit real Napoleon of any age. Vanesa Kirby could have done a reasonable Josephine, but it was presented as Gothic vamp, ruining any intent of historical accuracy.
The worst movie about Napoleon ever. it is not because of the actors, it is the movie itself.
Movie sucks
Its a good film
Pathetic movie... It's a shame! This movie is nothing compared to Waterloo from 1970!
In real life Josephine was 6 years older than Napoleon. But I gather that small, niggly litte details like that don't really matters.
