  • The Harley Davidson community is full of people talking about horsepower. What they don't mention much is weight! These things go hand in hand and once you realize that, some Harley models shine more than you thought!

    This feels like one of those "someone needed to say it" videos. Lots of detail, lots of facts, and absolutely one that needs to be shared and added to discussions.

      Appreciate that. All I see on the Facebook groups are dyno sheets which means nothing if your bike is hundreds of pounds heavier than the one you're racing! Also another conversation that needs to be had is rider skill but I don't know if they are ready for that one. haha

    Based on specs on Harley website Sportster S is .241 HP to weight ratio. Close to Pan Am but with a better torque curve.

    Finally someone said it publicly lol as someone who came from sport bikes and last year made the switch to a street bob I knew I wasn’t going to be winning the speed race but I do love the grunt and torque and it’s a different kind of ride now but I admit I was worried at first thinking I wasn’t going to get the same kind of thrill but I’m happy to admit I was wrong and love every second of ripping around on my bob. If I ever feel the need for speed again I’ll pick up another used crotch rocket because nothing compares but until then I’ll be enjoying the thump of my vtwin

    I've been saying this forever in my videos. You can't help but smile when you're a Pan Am owner out on a group ride & hear guys argue over which H-D model is faster/has more Hp. What's worse, wait until they find out how much better the Pan Am's suspension is.

    Have 3 Harley’s but my Nightser is so much fun, loves a few twisties, just have to remember on overtakes to use the full rev range as less torque lower down

    I like the HP to weigh ratio thing. Used it for years with cars. It really helps level a playing field to performance compare. That PA is fast! Way faster than most Harley riders realize. I have a 19 Softail 679 pounds same 150 crank / 135 WHP. Pretty fast by Harley standards but it would likely get its butt kicked by the PA. .263 HP per pound vs only .221 HP per pound. Hard to make 110 pounds up with traction or gearing.

    • @vernlochtefeld1626

      Someone liked my reply recently so I re read it. Since my original reply I purchased a Dual Sport bike. A KTM 690, a big single cylinder thumper. Similar in purpose to the Pan Am adventure bike. Only smaller lighter more dirt oriented. Tuned it makes about 80 HP as it made 68 WHP. At 340 pounds this is .235 hp per pound. Fast but still not the hp per pound as the PA. Also I plan to rebuild my softail this winter to 180 WHP about 212 at the crank. Due to a new fairing & speakers the bike will jump to about 700 pounds. This comes out to .3038 HP per pound. Only after a full performance big bore build will it make more hp per pound than the PA. Better than using the crank HP number would be to use WHP. But I didn’t have that for the PA. I may revisit this as I know Fuel Moto has piped & tuned WHP numbers for the PA. Results are in. Fuel Moto with AC, pipe, & tune made 147whp. 173 crank makes for .3040. Liquid cooling variable valve timing definitely brought some advantages for the PA.

    This video is right on time for me. Just the other day I got curious and started comparing power to weight between the vrod and the nightster975. I was shocked to see that the nightster had slightly better power to weight than the vrod muscle and the torque to weight was even better. I can't believe nobody's mentioned that yet. And that's not even the sportster s. It really makes me question the point of all the "performance" big twin bikes. It's like they're cosplaying as performance bikes when Harley has actual performance bikes in the revmax bikes. Seems like the big twins are fast for Harley's but the revmax bikes are fast bikes period.

    • @Helmigurt
      @Helmigurt Před 6 měsíci +1

      True. I test drove the Sportster S and the Low Rider S and the SS is in another league power wise compared to the Low Rider S. They feel similarly torquey but when the LRS runs out of steam the SS just starts… I decided for the SS for other reasons (electronics and cost) compared to the LRS but the power certainly helped!

    • @super16g123

      It's really interesting to watch what's going on with Harley Davidson nowadays. There are now actual performance Harley's being sold next to performance looking Harley's. But all of the mocos energy is behind the latter. I'm wondering how this is going to go with the performance Harley guys. Do they switch over to the superior performance revmax platform or do they now essentially just cosplay with the "performance" big twins.

    Horsepower doesn't tell power to weight, doesn't tell you how fast it gets to that HP, only that it can get there and above all else, doesn't tell you how the bike will make you feel.

  • @artvertex4152
    @artvertex4152 Před 6 měsíci

    Even if we use Torque. There is not a huge gap between Pan-Am and Road Glide TQ:WT numbers as I expected, it's like just 10% more torque. Meanwhile There is really a huge gap of HP:WT numbers, Pan-Am have like double the HP ratio of a Road Glide.
    A Road Glide to have almost the same TQ:WT ratio as a Nightster 975 is really eyeopening actually. 😮

    Here are my two cents, I do not build my bikes just to make more power. I build my bikes to be an extension of my personality. I build my bikes to separate me from the weekend riders. I want people to know I am an enthusiast just from looking at my bike, or better yet, hearing it. I don't need more power but there is nothing I enjoy more than shattering the stereotype of the slow Harley. I think the point you're trying to make is that Harleys are great bikes from the factory and don't need thousands of dollars worth of upgrades to be an awesome motorcycle and I could not agree more.

    What counts is the power-to-weight-ratio over vehicle speed, if you could show that in a graph ? And then in the five or six gears ? Then you might see that the bikes you showed with a lower MAXIMUM power-to-weight-ratio, have a higher power-to-weight-ratio in the LOWER vehicle speeds, where you ride them in reality, and that is what you notice on the road.
    But for some people this might be to complicated, they just want to hear a simple MAXIMUM power-to-weight-ratio figure like politicians or managers would, but then they may be paying more for less performance.
