- Reading aloud doesn't have to be boring!
People who tend to feel self-conscious when reading in front of an audience put on a boring voice when reading aloud. The boring and flat tone of voice used by reluctant readers sends everyone listening to sleep! Here are some tips to bring life to your voice next time you find yourself reading aloud in a classroom, work or social situation.
You Gotta 'Own It'
Due to nerves a lot of people read aloud either too quickly or quietly. When you 'own' your reading spotlight, you're not in a hurry to get your bit over and done with. Occupy space with your voice and take as long as you need.
Punctuation Is Your Friend
When reading aloud the most important thing is that you have enough breath to get through to the next natural pause in the text. Punctuation in a text such as full stops and commas show you where you can next take a breath. Try to avoid taking a deep breath mid sentence as it will disrupt to flow of the text and make it harder for listeners to understand what you are talking about. Scan a little ahead of where you are reading to see where your next pause is. Then, when you get there, don't forget to breathe!
Make Your Words Dance
Your job as narrator is to bring life to the text and to indicate the important parts to the audience. You can do this by varying your voice in different ways as you read. One of the ways you can do this is by placing stress and emphasis on key words and phrases in the text.

This kind of stuff needs teaching in schools
Or even modeling. That's part of why I want to learn to speak and narrate well. Not to rub it into my future students' faces that I'm simply better than they are, but to possibly help create a passion for clear communication and engaging narration to them.
I wrote a short story for school, but thought that people wouldn't understand the feelings I want to address in my story if I read it in my normal voice. That's why I'm here :).
I only read books in my mind and each character has their own unique voice. If I read out loud, I can't tell what I just read and I have to repeat the sentence over and over again until I understand it. I think thats because of my ASD
Your videos are amazing! You're so underrated! You thankfully have given me the courage to read a book in front of my classmates.
Thanks :)
I have a deep love for stories, written and spoken, and thus, I love reading. I also love sharing that with other people. Knowing that I will someday have a wife and children, and that someday I will have students, I want to be able to take a written story and breathe new life into it through good narration. So, thank you for this video! This video is what I have been looking for!
bless you and the closed captions on this video. Thank you!
When I read aloud I sound rediculous but it helps my comprehension tremendously. I overthink at times and get distracted by reading silently
My wife wants me to read her smut books to her at night before bed, so here I am looking for tips lmao
thank you for the video and the subtitles
You Jade, are your own best example.
It's a great video. Great information. Thank you.
Many thanks, Jade! Love your accent btw
Thank you.
Thank you for gaveing a amazing ideas how read aloud front of class.

Thank you. I'm fixing to do a reading and this helped.😁

I love the picture of the cat behind you
❤
The cat painting behind you is so dope.
Thank you
Hi Jade great tips again. That’s one evil looking cat in the background.🥶🥶🥶
I must listen 👂
...hmmm.... check my channel. I nearly finished reading all the Harry Potter books and picked up stuff along the way. Things that helped me:
- Read about 90% of your normal pace. You make less mistakes.
- Scan to the next punctuation, then glance away from the writing... its hard to explain, but you instantly remember the next 5 to 6 words, so you "act them out."
thank you so much! Im doing much research on this because I am a new narrator for audible and I am looking up tips to help me get hired and more gigs. I plan to start uploading my readings to my channel too. :-)
Just know I was here
Great
all of you have very beautiful, soft, loud and scary voices when i read the comments 😂😂😂😂
I run out of breath easily
Thank you for this! I am reading to my wife and started great, but as we near the end of the book I find myself stumbling and misreading often or missing the right tone - I really want the end of the book to hit and i think this will help :) i expect her to cry like a baby at "stay gold ponyboy"
Oh man, The Outsiders??
Recording myself reading my boyfriends favorite book for his Valentine’s Day present and I sound kinda boring while I’m reading it
It might be better practising one part of the book and doing it really well. The whole thing is a huge undertaking.
Is it normal if you forget much of what you are reading? I'm trying to read a segment from a newspaper and I find I'm not really making sense of what jm reading (after I've just read it).
Any advice for this would be great! Hope it's something that can be understood and developed
Yes and it'll get better with time.
What I like to do with my reading I like to play around with my voice like voice acting
I do too. Especially horror novels , makes the story more vivid.
I get out of breath when I read aloud. Any advice in this department?
Jade has a very professor Trelawney look 🤓
Honestly, a British accent always works for me.
2015/04/29 The date when 이사 (Moving On) was released and I learn about reading to the upcoming episode The quotes from this song 😂
Jade was much lovelier back then… so was I.
i c a n t r e a d
beautiful woman
Los que vienen de la clase de el profe chona >
I disagree, a description has its puropse, otherwise the author would not have put it there.
It's ironic because her accent is somewhat difficult to understand.
Duude we came here to gain some knowledge of how not sound boring, the whole video was boring I yawned through the video
I find that when I read aloud I'm not very convincing. Even if I try to be entertaining, it just seems off like a child in a bad movie who doesn't know how to act and you can just tell that they're reading lines.
I'm a a church lay reader, and I am really trying to improve my reading, this is very helpful.
I have a playlist of reading bible books on my channel page. i do think it helps to be a good reader. Yet if the Holy Spirit is absent leading the hearer even the best readers wont make a difference except maybe planting a see for later when their hearts do come open. Not our works that pricks the hearts but with the Spirit.:) I will sub to you and if you upload will check out your bible videos.:) I think feeling the stories as if you can visual them as a real life story( since they were) pleases the listeners. What do you think?
Same here!👍😀
Jade, your facial animation, glasses and upbeat tempo makes this video easier to watch than some of the others.
Those glasses are awesome
The tip on paying attention to where the punctuation/pauses are going to come in was a great tip!
I LOVE YOU JADE!!! You are amazing and your videos have really helped me! Keep posting them, I love you, bye!! :) :)
thank you so much
Always the best, Jade. Michael
I love you!!!!!!
your voice is good
thank you for your help I love your accent.
LOVE YOU! HUGS FROM ARGENTINA!
You're really beautiful, thanks for sharing those tips
Was it Coraline's cat at the back?
It does look like the black cat from Coraline, doesn't it?
Loved the video! By the way, where did you get those frames? They look absolutely lovely on you xx
Dulce Ximena BO I got them in Bangkok. :)
Is English punctuation simple? My (German) English teachers were quite reluctant to teach us punctuation. I think my (American) English teacher in the university taught us a little bit about punctuation but never in comprehensive details.
You look awesome with that haircut and glasses. :D +99999999999999999999
Which is your favorite book ?
Haha I saw shy bear.
What did she study at uni??
i reading words of rap with music in the same time
is it good way
It sounds like a good way to me. I hope you've kept it up!
I tell you what, ¡English could really use these!
What's the problem yith the audio of this video? every time she pause speaking there is a sudden break in the background sound, witch is very disrupting and make more difficult to concentrate in listening to what she says, and yet it's an ineresting speach
It's not the audio it's just that the video has been edited there so it is more coherent
Jade...What university did you graduate from? :))
I fancy you.
Good. But i think much better if you show more example. I don't want leasining rules,i want leasining your life expiriense.
You need don't speak about reading.I think you must reading crazy book, story, dialog in your youtube video.
More example, and more pushing voise. Good luck. And thanks
Argh it's people, not 'pee-pou'!
Aaaaaargh it's breath not 'bref'!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!! Lol
Arh just get a life. Your life is boring.
Your Voice Sounds very high and shrill sometimes.
