Irish History is not Black and White. There is many grey areas in Irish History. In 1916, Most Irish did not care about Independence and many in the Cities and large Towns wanted to remain within the UK and other with Irish Home Rule, but under the British Empire. Most people were too busy earning a living , than wanting full Independence. Many of those British Troops that you are disgusted with were Irish men (Irish regiments and locally recruited) and most were Catholic and yes, many did die in the Somme and in Belgium and they are kids by today's standards. Others became the backbone of the Newly Created Irish Free State Army in 1922 (after fighting at home against the Rebels and in world war 1), as the Various Irish Regiments under the British Army were disbanded in 1922 and/or since 1916 were killed, injured (suffered PTSD - Aka Shell Shock) and continue to serve in the Civil war under the Irish Army (or in opposition) and beyond. The Irish Civil War was far more brutal war, than the War of Independence. I really mean BRUTALLY. The British did not go as far as the brutality as the Irish did to each other. Just look at the Irish Jail system and the various massacres during the Civil war. The Civil War effects us today, more than the historical British rule.
In reality the first civil war was the Micheal Collins rebellions years after the 1916 to 1922, (which was only several skirmishes by modern standards). 1916-1922 was really the first civil war. In 1916, once the British Army commanders sorted themselves out as most of the army was on leave over the Easter Weekend, as they were unprepared as most (Irish) professionals troops serving in the British Army (For Redmond - Home Rule Bill ) were in France dying by the second. The ones back in Ireland were also Irish Troops locally were cycled back to Ireland, with some English and Welsh troops to circulate back for recovery. Dublin and Ireland were often used by the British Army when bringing back troop from far abroad, such as India and Africa to reconditioned them back to social life. Ireland was a the half way point to check for the soldiers and to get them back to normal routine, before going back to England, Wales and Scotland. They were suffering from Shell Shock when coming back from world war 1 battles.
These were the men who fought the 1916 rebels, most of them were Irish Soldiers. Most Irish (people) did not want this rebellion. They wanted Home Rule, not Full Independence, as per their voting in previous election before war broke out in Europe. These same Irish Soldiers in the British Army hunted for Micheal Collins and his men, and then just a few years later, were commanded by Micheal Collins as their leader of the Irish Free State Army and then fought a brutal civil war, which was worse than all their previous battles.
There is alot of Irish History that was whitewashed as it was too inconvenience, so it was not spoken about and is put in vague terms, such as "British" to cover all angles. All Irish people at that time where British Subjects (Aka British Citizens) and the Term British was used to include them. Research the Royal Irish Regiments (in the British Army) involved in the 1916 for yourself and find out their names and history, if you do not believe me. Look at the Battle of the Somme and you find many of the Irish Soldiers (serving in the Irish Regiments of the British army) were killed there and in Belgium in Ypres.
If you ever travel there , go to the Ulster Tower near Thiepval, and close nearby you find two other Irish Graveyards of dead Irish Soldiers, along with other British soldiers.

The Irish Who fought in World War 1 fought for Ireland and often with the promise of self home Rule after the war. 1916 rebels betrayed them, who wanted full Independence, which was an economic disaster for Ireland after that.
It took too many decades for Ireland to recover economically after that.

The IRA memorials was the 1916 to the civil war was remembered by both sides, but not the IRA civil war memorials (exception by some) as it was too emotionally brutal to talk about. WW2 once the war broke out the IRA Commanders who during the civil war was ordered arrested by their former commander (who lost the civil war Eamonn DeValera -also an Americancitizen as he was born in the US. Saved his life from 1916 executions by the British) who was the leader of the government at that time and the current IRA members were detained in the largest Irish military barracks called the Curragh camp. They were detained in a brutal camp section at the opposite side where British and Germsns were held. The British and Germans organized day trips to the local town or to the horses while on day pass.
I had to research that history and was shocked. The soldiers who guarded the British and Germans were given blank bullets and the soldiers guards who guarded the IRA Camp were given real bullets.

Being a citizen of Northern Ireland and being a catholic, I honestly find it to hard to believe we got what we wanted
Even with the price payed at a useless toll, the Irish never fully made the country independent, and the fighting that took place after the Easter rising, where simply all but terrorist attacks.
Studying too, Dubliners where quiet shocked to see irish rebels in Dublin, they believed all the fighting had moved to France, and when British soldiers arrived at the outskirts of Dublin, the crowd cheered “God save the King”. Dubliners where quite happy living under the British statis-quo. So only for a few extremists radicalising a population, we have graves marked in Dublin and a still ongoing political crisis today, never to say the economy too..

Irish History is not Black and White. What I am letting you know is not taught in our history books about 1916 rebellion (aka war of Independence) and in our media is not full correct. It leaves out a lot of information. There is many grey areas in Irish History, for many hundred years that has been air brushed out of history. In 1916, Most Irish did not care about Independence and many in the Cities and large Towns wanted to remain within the UK and other with Irish Home Rule, but under the British Empire. The British Commanders knew about these groups, just originally though they were just playing march, so when they march down their small Calvary, what is now known as O'Connell street, and the Rebels shot dead the Calvary soldiers, then they knew that the rebellion was real.
