Watch Mother Hummingbird Hatch Eggs and Feed Her Chicks
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 9. 03. 2024
- We were able to set up another new Allen's Hummingbird nest cam. She built her nest on a light bulb under an umbrella. She did the right thing, with all the rain we have been having in Southern California!
We named the mother Ella (short for umbrella) and we joined her incubation process on the 14th day after she laid her second egg. She kept busy adding nesting material and protecting her eggs from the high winds.
Then on the morning of the 16th day, she left the nest and revealed to us that the first egg hatched during the night. We watched with excitement as Ella fed her first baby. Not long afterwards we noticed a crack in the second egg and we knew it would hatch soon. Ella did some stretching on the nest and then she got up and revealed that the second egg had hatched. We wish the best for Ella and her babies. We will watch them grow, exercise their wings and finally leave the nest to go out into the world on their own.

đ§Ÿ Frequently Asked Questions
We made a video about all the frequently asked questions about hummingbird nests, you can watch it here: âą Hummingbird Nest Ultim...
âWhat species of hummingbird is this?
This is an Allen's Hummingbird which normally breeds on the West coast of the United States and Mexico, although the bird has been spotted in other areas of the southern United States.

The first egg was laid on February 15. The second egg was laid on February 17.

Both eggs hatched on March 4th.

âWhen do baby hummingbirds open their eyes?
It usually takes more than a week for a babyâs eyes to open. On average, a newbornâs eyes are open 9 days after he has hatched.
âWhat is the nest made from?
The nest is made from grasses and small twigs filled in with soft and fluffy fiber that the mother hummingbird finds on fuzzy plants like seed pods, dandelion down, cottonwood and the like. The nest is held together with spider silk and is soft and spongy to accommodate the rapidly increasing size of the baby birds. To camouflage the nest she put paint chips on the outside to try to blend in with the house.
âHow can I help with the nest building?
You can supply soft material for the mother hummingbird to use in her nest. You can buy nesting material for your hummingbird here: amzn.to/3OxY3do

Just a few hours after my husband passed away. Where I live we don't get many hummingbirds. But he loved hummingbirds when we would go to Florida to my sister's house he would sit out there on her Lanai and just watch them go to town how busy they are. And to see this hummingbird it just reminds me of the day he passed away because a hummingbird actually flew and stayed in silent motions is fluttering its wings looking at me crying holding my nephew I will never forget that momentđąđ
â€â€â€. Love hummers. Have a big collection, clear glass others painted, even one carved from a dried mushroom. And my hubby carved! them from basswood, then painted them. He passed 2days before his 91st birthday, 2020.

Hi, whatâs up with Allenâs hummers are they taking over Annaâs territory?
They do seem to be increasing in numbers. They started on the Channel Islands, but have been taking over all of Southern California. But Anna's are tough. They will find food.
@@HummingbirdSpot agreed, I had to spread out my feeders because I have a bunch of Annaâs nesting at my front yard and I now have two feeders at my rear yard guarded by male Allenâs or RufousâŠitâs hard to tell but they do have distinct markings from male Annaâs.
