I wanted this once in a lifetime project to be as amazing as I could make it. Since reaching our 1,000 patron goal at Patreon I have been working on this beast of a build. Those patrons that helped me convince the others that I needed this Manta will have their name physically on or in the biggest model in Warhammer 40K.
If you want to support us consider joining our Patreon where we post up early access to shows like 40k in 40m. Right now we have a community project we are doing with Patrons as well.

U should try and play a game on the manta it would be interesting
Any update video coming soon? This project is very cool and I really wanna see how it's coming along.
Its really fun seeing what your doing vs the diorama that they are doing over on Squidmar's channel. Very different and interesting approaches!
The fact that there’s a drawer labeled “the good dice” implies the existence of a drawer labeled “Steve’s Dice”.
Outstanding! XD
Have four 2000-point Chaos armies vs an 8000-point Tau superforce. I for one, think the custom 4v1 spectacular would be a sight to behold.
Yes I would love that, something else that could be really cool is 1000 points I. Infantry units vs a taunar or 2000 points infantry/ few elites vs manta
doing it with mwm is elite
mwm?
Apocalypse Mode.
midwinterminis
The way I did my manta is three 1/2"thick acrylic rods with three 6"bases, one in each wing and one in the front each about an inch or two away from the hanger. This allowed the manta to be more stable on most tabletops and more space underneath it to allow a more thematic feel when playing around it instead of one massive base. It also allowed it to move and sit above terrain pieces which you can't do with a single large base. Each rod was just drilled and fitted into the hull of the manta and each base is 1" thick decritave wood bases from hobby lobby with a 3 stacked large washers for weight.
On the one hand, I think the Manta would look amazing tilted, as if making a turn over the battlefield; on the other hand, that makes it hard if you also want to use it as a gaming table. Maybe it would still be stable with detachable rods?
Apocalypse game vs. Chaos? Have Mortarion, Magnus, Abaddon, Karn, and Lucius on the battlefield. Love the idea for a Kill Team game atop the Manta. Would be cool to see T'au vs. Ork Freebooters.
Killteam on a manta would be so cool. Especially if they used the interior as well
LOL Battle on the Manta reminds me of a Smash bros. battle in 40k. Hmmm tweak the rules for some knockback and see who falls off the Manta for the win :P
@@mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299 lol I like this idea!!
It would be cool to see like a 5,000 point normal 9th game with the taunar and manta together, or maybe a game with the objective for a tau force to escape into the manta at the other side of the board.
Liking the sound of evac to the manta would be a great game to watch
The Manta could provide "covering fire" to the retreating T'au, only hitting on 6s so it doesn't become hopeless for the pursuing attackers.
You should have the base be a pile of wrecked Imperial Knights and Space Marine Steve's tears.
You'd think for $1,700 FW would make it nice to assemble
They're no literally-any-Japanese-model-company that's for sure.
Forge World is really lacking in the quality of their printing and resin
@@MrDuckyart seriously though bought my little cousin one of those gundam kits thinking he'd need help did it himself in one day.
@@bigc4277 My understanding is that ALL the Manta's were made many years ago when quality was at lower standard. And all sold now are just coming from old warehouse stock.
I heard FW products are better quality now. I'm not speaking from first hand experience. I'm asking.
@@georgelincolnrockwell5843 that is probably true, but if you're going to charge someone $1700 for something...maybe it shouldn't be shoddy and half assed 🤷🏻♂️
For the base you could do something like Midwinter Minis is doing with his warlord titan. Instead of one big base do several smaller bases. Would probably look weird on a flyer but I think there could be potential there.
One way to model the flight stands would be to design it like a Tau Empire flight dock, with Tau-style winches holding it up. Maybe some tiny Tau technicians, hauling fueling hoses, carting spare power packs, or waving glowing signal wands. Just make it a diorama of the Tau preparing the Manta for war.
Base idea you could put a ruined, rail gun through the chest, Knight Tyrant or something, that would be really cool!
The lights on the left and right should be different colors. Real life planes do this so that it's easy to tell which direction the plane is going, and it's also done on astronaut's suits to quickly determine the orientation just by the lights.
Loving the Manta Saga - and yes please continue to film, edit, and post more unit/model building videos in the future! I love this content.
is anyone else wondering about what Tycho is working on in the foreground of the shot where nick is editing
It's the Hellbringer Drake from Conquest!
You could theoretically use a resin/epoxy and fiberglass sheets to make a custom stand for it it would be light weight and also durable. The hardest part would be making a mold for the stand to late the fiberglass in to pore the epoxy over.
"The good dice" hahahaha nice. I love these videos and I can't wait to see it on the tabletop!
Putting lights in the manta was a bright idea 👍
Awesome content playon
👉Scenario idea !!! : A table in the air (or space ?) where it's only the manta (and some tau planes like the razorshark) versus some other planes from other factions (like necron scythes or stormravens SM...) ! 😃
Bonus ideas :
- Change the normal rules to move to make it like all the planes are actually going really fast in the same direction (they only move sideways or so).
- Have another table full of infantry on the ground the represents the rest of the army. The skyship battle could interact with the battle (bombs, explosions and so..)
This is awesome and I would love to see Michael and his necrons back for an Apocalypse game.
For a stand I recommend looking into some of the fancy stands they use for displaying cakes and baked goods. I bet you could find a clear one that you could modify easily
The draw that says the good dice in the standing desk 🤣🤣🤣. Nice touch
You could use a cake bord as a base
For the Tau'va!
Great glorious googly moogly, go Nick go! This is supper exciting, I can't wait to see how it turns out. You got this!
For the base, you could customise the rods to have battlesuits 'manta striking' out of it, and make the rods look like their engine smoke or similar
Dude! Saskatchewan pride! Lol
Glad to see a fellow from the prairies doing well! Love your work! Keep it up!
Buddy from work is also from Saskatchewan, this video is now officially the second time I've heard the term 'bunnyhug'
Love these videos!
I came for the battle reports, but these shorter build videos are great to watch.
More on how you do PlayOn's terrain, etc
As a necron player (Who was inspired to take up the hobby thanks to you awesome guys!) I would love to see an apocalypse game against the T'au and that beautiful Manta! I'm sure whatever paint scheme it ends up with, it will be an absolute beauty! keep it up and cant wait to see it!
On the base plate, you should have a couple tau (3/4 maybe) hunkered down like the manta is swooping down for air support.
The drawer for "good dice" killed me 🤣 great ad spot! And really good work on the Manta! For the Greater Good!
Can't wait to see thing painted.. Can't wait to see it in action!! Whole project already looks amazing
For the greater good!
I feel like you need something for size comparison. Dropping a few pathfinders out of a bay would look cool.
The most impressive part of this, for me, is that Nick is building a Manta whilst working a full-time job, having commitments to Play On Tabletop, having young kids, and a wife who I'm sure like's to see him occasionally.
As someone in a similar position, I am in awe. I'd never get that Manta built. Inspirational stuff Nick!
Maybe you could make 3 stands at the front and the wings and connect them with big ring magnets and steel balls? That would allow the manta to fly over any terrain with a dynamic pose. The model might be to heavy to pull that of but if it's not that'd be dope.
The missed opportunity to call this Nick's Manta-piece. Looking fantastic!

As soon as you mentioned who to fight, Jerry came to mind, please make it happen team!
the trench part gave me anxiety, but you did well, nice job!
The stand needs to be 2 parallel sheets of clear plastic. The plastic is the type that can reflect light through carved channels. Having light shine through the channels to portray beams of light. Similar to those found in alien spacecraft with scanners. Having the Manta scan the ground as it moves across the field.
It's coming along beautifully... Can't wait to see the finished product 🤘
The Good Dice! So that's where they've been hiding.. 😂👌
Awesome stuff Nick and co. The LED work on this is FANTASTIC! Two more things; I also say Deh-cal, it might be a Canadian thing and neighbouring Saskatchewan, I am very familiar with a bunny hug, oh! Next video, tell 'em all what a touque is, eh?
For the flying base, purchase a large acrylic cake stand (the single layer one) and just sit it on that
Next you should see if you can get hold of an old Eldar Vampire kit, it's a similar kind of hell, but on a slightly smaller scale!
I wish Forge World would bring the Vampire back. So very hard to find these days.
Keep it up Nick! You are a hobby inspiration for us all.
Looking forward to see a game being played with (or on) the Manta when it's finished :D it looks awesome
A Kill Team match on the manta would be super fun!!
I don't play 40k, but this project is cool enough that I'm keeping an eye on it. The LEDs are neat.
Freaking awesome Nick!
Your energy is amazing and you've done an amazing job :D
Kill team game. Space Wolves Reivers vs Tau as a throwback to the OG kill team box.
Yes, Tau vs Necrons! Looking forward to more Manta videos.
This project is A-W-E-S-O-M-E. You are an inspiration to us all.
kill team on the manta would be cool. All Flyer battle would also be cool
The way you say decal reminds me of TPB and I love that
the engine lights look so on point!
I would love to see Mr. Initiative to krump a Tau Manta.
So darn cool. Stay awesome Nick!
Great work T. Nick, she's really coming together!
For the base I'd suggest forgoing the actual base and just using 4-5 support struts. That way you can more easily stand 'er up on the table as she flys about :)
As for the how...did somebody say "reinforcements"?
This is amazing. Absolutely fabulous work and thank you so much for not cutting the wing off!!!
I should try a modeling project where I use some LEDs. Perhaps when I get around to a Wraithknight or a Doomsday Ark.
I’d make the acrylic rods look like search lights.
Set up some ladders, scaffolding and such then play a Tau vs. Whatever Kill Team game ON the manta. Like an ambush party attacked it before take off or something
Wow that LED scheme looks amazing.
Play on Tabletop’s Manta obviously won the battle against Squidmar’s Manta in every possible way.
Now I understand what caused Squidmar’s Manta to crash.
I wonder if you could do a cinematic mission with squads of Space Marine Inceptors landing on the Manta in-flight and trying to capture the cockpit entrance while Tau emerge to ward them off.
You carry on with your pronunciation of decal my man, thats how we say it in the UK.
if you want the windows to be clear then a clear resin print with a gloss varnish (people say pledge is best but i haven't tested it) turns pretty see-through
I think you should try and put it on something scenic like the DP-Standees… Bombing down some city….
Plus I‘m all for KT on a Manta 😅
Nick you’re a gaming and hobby inspiration to us all!
Bunny hug … now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time.
2:01 I was tabbed out and only kinda listening, and I could've sworn Nick said "I've experimented with LSD before."
Playing kill team on the manta sounds fun! It may need some more terrain on top though. =)
Bunny-hug is clearly the correct name.
Can't wait to see the paint job! 🇬🇧
I would suggest to use the manta as an object to conquer in 1000pts game on a sidetable next to an apocalypse table. If the tau win, they can use the manta on the maintable instantly, if they lose, they have too wait till turn 3. start both games at the same time. There was something similar in an old white dwarf. I really like the idea to have multiple tables in an apocalypse game. Cheers Mitch
I love watching this project evolve! Thank you!!
Doing a great job man can't wait to see it painted. 🤟
In the first hour wow, love your content guys:D
This has my heart pumping
I totally understand why you are nervous xD
YES I was just binging the previous episodes, looking great so far!!!
Don't worry Nick! As a fellow Canadian you're saying decal the proper way!
Have an apoc going on while a kill team game is also happening on its back. Have the kill team game be a group of infiltrators fighting through the manta trying to sabatoge key systems (destroying a rail gun or blowing up one engine slowing it down) while teams of fire warriors try and defend and earth caste engineers also try and give buffs (the rail guns get stronger, get faster, better save) I think it would be complicated since killteam takes a fraction of the time apoc does, but it would be cool
Or have a three part series,
Killteam on the manta and who ever wins either buffs or nerds the manta
Game 2 is a normal game on the battlefield as a tau hunter cadre try and destroy a high value enemy asset (some lord of war like the space marine super heavy tank or a thunder hawk) this decides if in the third game if they can use that lord of war
Game 3 is apoc and this is where everything,
Comes in as the manta and enemy super heavy finally duke it out
It would be a lot of work but could be very cool
Thank you for reading my essay on toy soldier game
It's looking great!
Possible kill team rule- Manta takes flight on turn [x] and all models slip towards the back at increasing speeds as the game progresses. Could make for some fun dynamics as everyone rushes for the front of the Manta
Love the content!
Yes face it off with the necrons !
I think a revisit to a Appocolipse with this beast woud be amazing!!
Great job ! I can't wait for a kill team game played on this beast !
When painting is finished, you must give us some shots under low lighting to show off all this LED work.
Definitely excited to see it in Apocalypse
Custom game idea: Manta vs. Everyone.
It would be so cool if plants/rocks/corpses created a subtle T'au symbol on the base. Proud of your perseverance, Nick.
Interesting idea!
those standing desks are amazing for painting, too. I use one at home for my hobby.
The Manta is awesome
Consider putting it on a cradle instead of fixed struts. That way distribution of mass would be through the cradle instead of internal structure putting in onto 4 struts. Of course, moving it might be a problem since you'd likely not have it permanently held, but that might make it easier to push around
Place a bluetooth receiver linked to some small speakers that you can hide in the vents. The T'au will charge in battle like the Valkyries of old (or bombard human planets with annoying tunes, if they are feeling like pranking)
It's the game's largest and best armed drop pod. Also the rules for the manta specifically say that you can have units embarked on any vehicles it can carry that can have units embarked on them and those units do not count towards the 200 infantry the manta can carry on it's own. If you loaded four devilfish into the thing with their max of 12 warriors/drones that's another 48 units to spring up out of nowhere in addition to the 8 XV8s, 200 infantry/drones and the four devilfish.
I hear a lot of people say it sucks but I think that's probably more shit talking than anything else. There's not many of the things floating around because of the cost so they're not showing up that much. I got to think this thing would give you some serious advantage - especially if you get to play first. Your opponent has set up his initial deployment and now that you've had the sneak peak you can disembark and have at it as best suits you. Of course you need to play at least a 3000 point game to get the Manta in there with any appreciable amount of points left for XV8s, infantry and drones.
Having some crisis suits manta striking by hanging off of the manta's supports or something would be a very cool touch.
Nice "deckels" on that Stormsurge, lol
Ok I'm officially hooked on 40k
Hear me out, Vallhallan's posing as Guvesa have snuck onboard in an attempt to kill an ethereal. A fierce battle takes place Over the wings as it attempts to take off. Que Dramatic music; Tau force 1.
Here’s an idea for an apocalypse battle report - Blood Angels VS Tyranids, set in Baal’s last stand
You know shits serious when nick uses his full name in the intro
