I'm no psychologist but his mum died, followed by drastic life changes with his aunt. The one consistent thing he had from the time his mum was alive was Arsenal. Arsenal became his life; which is why his entire life revolves around Arsenal. His job and even his missus is nicknamed after an Arsenal player.
Sounds like young specs transferred his love and comfort into Arsenal. It's sad that Specs had to go through this but he's a positive impact on the world and has come through the trauma well.

I know it's funny but no matter what you say, an event like that will leave a mark. One way or another. Even if she was the worst and you wished it happened (I know), not having a mother to begin with is enough. Having one you never wanted that then leaves forever and you get no second tries? That's it. That was your mother and she's gone. Better without? Arguably. Having one at all is a blessing too and you hope for a good mother which most of us are lucky to have, I feel.
