I understand where Joe is coming from, but JD needs to see the speed of the NFL

I’m sorry but preseason football is less complex than SEC football. Most basic coverages and teams don’t go into the game looking for a win.
@rsswimmer8445 but the speed of the game in the NFL is totally different from college, every rookie has said this for the past 50 plus years

Wasn't 12 years ago Rg3 started a preseason game and at times he looked like a world beater and at times he looked like a rookie? BUT this gave a chance to learn and develop, it was close to playing a regular season game at full speed. We didn't have a problem with that at the time, but, don't get me wrong Jordan is special, but give a taste of what the NFL is and not shelter him! Cause I know that the younger ones will cry if things don't go right against TB, will say he's not ready for the NFL

I agree with your idea that JD should only play one series in the final preseason game. But what about in-game feel? Getting ready for hostile and friendly crowds? Seattle's twelfth man is a thing. You can manufacture crowd noise during practices, but it's not the same. Getting used to coaches and how they coach in game? JD and all the rookies have to learn how to adjust to that. He's going into a hostile environment in Tamps. Why not give him a series in the Miami game, playing in front of a hostile crowd?
@wonderfulfaison he should play in the first preseason game, not the last. What if JD gets an ankle twist in the game? NOT STARTING TO SEASON OPENER! NOW WHAT? JUST SAYING
Only argument I’d make is that a preseason crowd is nowhere near a regular season one.
@jamesalexander5562 he would have as much of a chance to get hurt in that game too. Play him because there are things the coaches need to see or dnt play him because the coaches have seen enough. But to NOT play him because he MIGHT get hurt is not a valid eason. It's just coaching (or not coaching) through fear. We can't and won't win that way.

Defense is usually ahead of offenses to start the season. Offenses need time and reps. Not starting him preseason will slow the process further. It's nonsense talking about holding him out.

I think we need to let him get some reps in during the preseason. Def need to let him get a feel for things if we plan on starting him game 1. Also, it's the "Get Loud" podcast with Smoot and Jenks.
I don't think he should START (over Mariotta) in preseason, but IMO not getting our franchise reps seems silly.

Remember he will scrimmage two NFL teams in practice. So he will get some taste of NFL speed.
You can't bubble wrap this kid. Ever since the draft I have heard folks talk about putting together an offensive line better than the Hogs to protect Jayden and prevent him from taking shots. That's not going to happen in today's NFL.
I agree I wouldn't play him deep into the 3 preseason games, but I would have him play at least the first series in Games 1 and 2 and a half against the Patriots, perhaps longer against New England if they leave defensive starters in or Washington's offense wasn't productive in that first 30 minutes.
From what I remember Tom Brady and Drew Brees regularly played in the preseason and took the extra reps.
I want to see this team get off to a fast start and don't want to see the first 2-3 weeks of the regular season used as substitute preseason games.
BTW - Washington Commanders need to get rid of the black uniforms. The team looks too much like the Steelers and it's a bad mix of colors. Nobody wants to buy a jersey with black and red.
JD should only play with starting OL.

Joe is 100% correct. It seems weird because he's a rookie but he's far from normal or average in terms of rookies.
