  • Anyone who's used a Meade Autostar II handbox knows that after a few months of use in the field, the responsiveness can be pretty hit & miss. You mash the keys just to try and get it to respond, and the key you use the most (enter) just becomes hopelessly useless.
This shows you how to dismantle and clear the handbox and apply an appropriate conductive varnish to refresh the conductivity of the pads.

Great video. I used deoxit on all connections to include the ribbon cable. The ribbon cable connections were completely corroded, before cleaning when I turned on my controller the display was unreadable. Buttons w ere non functional. After cleaning with fiberglass pen 🖊 and deoxit it works like new. My biggest issue was the corrosion on the ribbon cable leads. I was about to buy a new 497 controller which there is only 1 on Ebay for sale and they want 400 bucks because of no supply due to covid and supply chain issues, you saved me a bunch. Thanks again, just awesome!

Hello, i have a meade etx-ls and it uses autostar 3. However, the screen of the remote control is broken. When I turn the telescope's on button, a red light comes on the keypad, but it does not give a command. Any ideas where I can find the screen?

I tried cleaning the black dots or conducting pads, it did not seem to make much difference, so I took a self adhesive copper foil tape , cut small square pads just big enough to stick on top of the dots, press them down hard so they won't fall lose and damage or short other electronics, (always a possibility a cooper pad may come lose and fall off short out something , but a risk well worth taking otherwise the bloody thing is useless anyway) I have repaired many TV remotes like that , so i know it works, and my Meade LX200 Autostar started to work brilliant, before that you would need to press buttons many times and harder before it accepted any commands.

Yep, you're getting the same result - the conductive silver paint is less likely to detach though. It does make a massive difference.

Hi firstly I have Meade Autostar 497 control controller. The lights are on when the remote operates, keys are active
    working
but there is no text on the screen. I think the LCD screen is broken and I will replace it with a working screen
    .
Do you think the whole controller is broken ? Thank you.

Hard to know. I suggest you go and join the following group as there are many people who know these controllers well.

It's worth noting that the Autostar 497 handboxes actually contain "brains" unlike the Autostar II handboxes (like in the video), which are just a display and keypad (all the brains are in the scope). It may not be as simple as replacing the screen.

@@TurboTalksTech I cleaned mine per you video and they still aren't repaired, as in they don't work. The one in the video wasn't broken; It was dirty. Cleaning is not the same are repairing.
