Our son was in the USMC and deployed to Afghanistan when this song came out. His second tour of duty was Iraq. And it didn't matter where I was or what I was doing when this song came on all I could do was cry. When you watch your baby boy get on a bus heading off to an airport where he'll board a plane that'll take him to a war zone it will break you and not just your heart. I spent most of my time on my knees praying. If I was some place where I couldn't get on my knees I prayed anyway. Nick was my only son and I wasn't going to give him up without a fight. But this fight I fought on my knees. He returned safely after Iraq to twin baby boys of his own who were born seven days after he left for his second and last tour. To God be all the glory.
'But no one laughs, because there's nothin' funny when a soldier cries.' That made my eyes well up with tears. I nearly bawled my eyes out...

As an American soldier I know how inspiring it is to get a letter from back home, this song brings tears to my eyes, because I know how it hurts to wait, not knowing if anyone will write you, and the fact that you know nothing about what is going on at home.

My mom played this when I was too little to understand the words.
I was going through my old boot camp letters form years ago, and it started playing through my head randomly. I instantly googled the words I was remembering.

Even if after you sign up and you get easy duty, the fact that you're willing to sign your right to a normal life away to protect your family and country means more than words can say. I'm thankful for those who did sign, I'm thankful for your service. In a perfect world, I wish you all would make it home without a scratch. I'm saddened when people are angry at the military, at the soldiers who are fighting to protect this country. It isn't the soldiers we should be angry at, if there's anyone to be angry at it isn't the ones who had to follow orders.

My mom is a veteran, and so is my uncle. And my brother... he went to Afganistan and never came back. I never got to write him a letter, I miss him so much. This song brings tears to my eyes each time I play it.
My father was in the Air Force and this song is very true. He was always excited to receive letters from me and my mom. He said even in Desert Storm, those letters brought him some joy and hope. God bless to our troops in every branch of service, those who have, had and will, we thank you for your bravery.

@@shopshop817 If I thought a friend died in a no win situation (Which actually happened in Beirut bombing) I would not put his friends in a situation where they thought they were not backed up by the country that had sent them there. You hold your tongue and tell them how proud you are that they are protecting us. To take morale away from a soldier is tantamount to treason in my eyes.
Example: Vietnam. We lost 50,000 soldiers because they lost morale and just didn't give two shits anymore I know I had family that fought and were spit on when they came home.
So I don't care what you think of my compassion when you should be questioning Bryan's compassion for the guys who served with his friend that are still fighting. How do you think they feel hearing this from your own countrymen? Defeated maybe?

My dad never served in the military. But with that being said, every time I've listened to this song since he passed last month it brings me to tears. He was constantly at war with himself. So am I. But the part when he says "Son you make me proud." Hits me like a damn sledge hammer. I'd give anything in the world just to hear him say that one more time. I love you dad. Rest in peace.

3:15 makes me cry every time I hear that line. My entire life has been to prove to my mom that I can be something, that I can be someone. It took me 20 years and now I am entering the Marines, and for the first time in my life, my mother is proud of me. When I told her that I was going to enlist she cried. She didn't tell me she was proud, but I can tell she is. I hope that others can experience the emotions that I am feeling now, and that this song will last through the ages, as a reminder

Its a scary thought. And people think its an easy think to go through but in all reality, us as military significant others we have the hardest job. We wait months for our loved ones to come home. I want to follow in my father and my uncle's footsteps and join with the Army. I know I have the right reasons. I just don't know about being away from my family that long... I still love this song.
My late father was a US Army Korean War combat veteran. This song always choked him up because his own father, who loved his 4 sons dearly, could not bear to see him off at the train station when he left for the war. His father, my grandfather, died before he could return home from Korea which prevented my Dad from attending his funeral. I wrote John Michael Montgomery about my father and imagine my Dad's surprise when he got a nice package in the mail with a personal letter, CD and signed T-shirt from John Michael Montgomery? I will be forever grateful to him for doing that for my father.

Man..does this song bring back memories. Before I shipped to Germany back in 82 (11th Armored Cav) my Dad took me in his bedroom. He wasn't much for words, so he gives me this watch. I can't even write this without tears..he was a good man, and he loved me dearly, used to talk to my picture while I was gone. Had I known how much he'd miss me I don't know that I would have gone, but..I felt it was my duty. I always wanted to be a soldier, so I became one. I know he was proud of me.

I was in the military for 4 years kid and in that time I saw 3 tours and held my best friend in my arms as he died, I think its great that our youth are serving and all but to make that decision you need to know without a doubt that this is something that you want to do. I is a hard as hell life. If you do go over there make sure you don't try to be a hero, hero's die. Keep your head down and make sure you trust the man or woman to your right and left, protect them as they protect you and you will live to see the next day.

my dad and brother are both in the army and in Afghanistan currently, i send them letters almost everyday from home, i miss them so much but i know that when they get home they always say how much the appreciated them. i am enrolling in the army in July to follow in their footsteps and my mom is leaving in March for her 4th tour. i respect all soldiers, marines and the airforce so much, its because of our troops we have free a country, you guys are the real heros in this world

Yeah, Jacob, wait until maybe your senior year and really think about it. Make sure you join for the right reasons ... for you. It's great that you want to because your grandpa served, but it's something you have to feel. The military isn't for everyone. Only the disciplined ones will be able to finish out their contract and go out on top, or serve the full 20+ years and retire. I've seen too many kids get discharged because they were not mature enough to follow rules and regulations. Not trying to scare you ... just really think it over when the time is right.
As for this guy, i enjoyed all of my 21 years, 6 months, and 22 days on active duty.
Jakob Goldbach I graduated in 2015 I'm 19 now and I leave for basic on the 17 of January I'm going in as infantry before you go in make sure that's what you actually want to do don't just hop in cause you think you'll love it.
