Pets are great companions. They can give you great joy and do your head in. They are worth it and hope it will get better with their timemanagement.

I also hate being in the UK in summer, there is just no escape from the heat, which is humid and oppressive. At least in Spain everyone has air con (in the South, anyway). I found North Spain fewer people with AC but the heat so much more doable for some reason. Love your cobra wall light!

I hate the hot weather it really knocks me about plus I wouldn't have any skin on the bone if I didn’t cover up completely , since I've had heart surgery my leg swells up when the weather changes , as my mom used to say " you can't get old in comfort " 😁 .

Part of cat training is rattling the Dreamies packet. That usually gets them heading towards you.

It's been a couple of years since we were last owned by a cat. That was Jasper, the elegant and intelligent Siamese whose portrait I use as an avatar. He was an indoor cat and rarely went outside. In the days before the 24-hour cat curfew (we live in the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne) we had a Cornish Rex, Sophie, whom we could summon by rattling a box of her favourite dry food. Over time she had associated that sound with food going into her bowl. So when we wanted her in at dusk we would stand on the verandah like a pair of idiots calling "Sophie! Sophie!" and rattling the box of food. It usually took a few tries. I am sure it amused the neighbours no end! Anyway, good luck with Midge and Bushka!

We had our cats on a mooring for 3 years and had a cat flap and they where used to coming and going.
We then bought a new boat without cat flap and decided not to put one in it was a big challenging to start but we have now got them to only go out once a day not in the evening or when people walk there dogs so about 11am for a short wile they have got used to it . I think its important you set some ground rules with the cats and get them used to coming in use food and treats we also have the issue of them not liking moving but are coming ground to it we make sure they are behind a cabin door so we can drive and let thme settle for a wile in the new spot before letting them out .
We cut entrances in hedge so they can go in is people or bikes go past and make sure they are in before we settle for the day .cats will run rings around you if you let them so try some rules and stick by it other wise they will wonder if they know they can be out all day and night .put a litter tray by the door the meowing will stop after a wile and put ear plugs in to sleep . You are there parent owner so you set the rules

Hi Phil, have you thought of putting a tracker on the cats,at least you would know where they are.As for heat, back in my boating days I got quite ill on a couple of occasions and you’re right,as you get older it’s worse,in fact an in law’s elderly father was seriously ill and ended up in hospital for a week.
    Keep cool.

I’ve always been lucky with my cats. They were highly trainable. I could get them to voluntarily go into their cat transporters for vet visits. My mother-in-law would make the whole process of flea medication and vet visits into a huge stressfest. So, she had major issues when the cats needed to be helped.
All our cats came to a bell. They used to love tuna or cheese/dreamies and only got those treats when we wanted them in. Maybe you could try Pavlov’s bell style training.

I took in 2 strays and they are mostly content to stay in when it is hot or sit on the front porch when it is pleasant but at night they want to travel. This past winter they didn't want out at all and that was easier for me. I lose a lot of sleep with their comings and goings at night but at least my house isn't moving!

Cats, sometimes you wonder if they do these things on purpose...lol. We have 2 cats and 2 dogs. The cats are great pets because they're relatively low maintenance and don't require, or demand, a lot of attention. Just kind of set and forget pets I guess. The dogs, which we love just as much, are easier in some respects because they want to please you for the most part which makes it easier to get them to do what you want them to do. Best of luck! Take care. Oh, I watch several narrow boat channels and you are the first one that has talked about night cruising. The only thing I've heard others say about it is they avoid it.

Hello Phil, as previous cat ‘owner’ I feel your frustrations! I had good results with tinned tuna (tinned in water, not oil or brine) standing out side and taping the edge of the tin with a metal fork usually got the cats in. They need to know what the tin sounds like first, so open the tin in front of them and give them some tuna. Best of luck, Simon

Hi. If you have both cats indoors but you have to open the doors, how about putting them on a Long Leash so they cannot leave through the door

I laughed out loud at this. The ‘owner’of this house is Heidi a tuxedo who requires 24 hr attention. I cannot imagine trying to cope with her on a boat.

🙀Cats can be real little perishers at times my Ginger Girl does exactly the same I stand in the garden call by her name and things like here kitty kitty kitty my neighbours must think I'm potty I don't go to bed until I can get her in which is quite often 3:00 am in the morning which promotes to say where the hell have you been, you know what is frogs, toads, newts & mice come out at night and the country some have the chance to grab a rabbit it's a good life being a Cat next time on Earth I am coming back as a Ginger Tom. 😾😼

Oh Phil, I feel for you. I didn't realise you were still struggling with them. What a nightmare for you. Is there any chance that you could get a small air conditioning unit? Or would it drain the batteries? Apart from that, I don't know what to suggest I'm afraid. Sorry.

Your mistake is by saying in the intro to your videos "MY two cats Bushka and Midge"! They are not your cats. You are their human. Don't get me wrong. I don't have anything against cats. However, I've seen that my friends who have cats living in their homes are totally ruled by them. Good luck.

Even if we are staying put they can have totally different lifestyles every few weeks. Mine keep me on my toes constantly. One or other of them will have packed their bags and gone away for a day or two on a killing safari. I read recently that cats can travel far from home to around seven miles, someone tracked theirs. My vet wants me to take them in for an annual jab……I would never get them together and I am not going twice……can never be sure they would be around at appointment time. But of course love them to bits and happiness and content is when both are together and we are all in one room for when they are having a 24hr sleeping session.

This is why cats are not suitable for narrowboats. They like to own all the territory they can see and they want it to be consistent. You have many years of this ahead. 🙀😸😸
