IMPROVISATION: PSALM 122 | GERBEN BUDDING

Improvisation on Psalm 122 on the De Koff organ in the Westerkerk in Gouda.
The organ of the Westerkerk was built in 1960 by the firm J. de Koff en Zoon in Utrecht. Initially it stood in the Reformed Maranatha Church in Hilversum. After the closure of this church, the organ was bought by the Reformed Schranskerk in Leeuwarden. When this church also closed, the organ was moved from Leeuwarden to the Goudse Westerkerk in February 2001. Quite a lot had to be changed to the church building and instrument, in order to fit the spacious organ in the Westerkerk. This was done by a group of volunteers led by organ builder Slooff from Ouderkerk aan den IJssel.
The organ was inaugurated on February 1, 2002.

Gerben Budding (1987) is internationally active as a concert organist and church musician. He is director of music of the Sint-Janskerk in Gouda with its beautiful Moreau organ from 1736 and vesper organist at the Utrecht Domkerk with its famous Bätz organ from 1831.
He received education on the conservatory in Utrecht. There he got his Bachelor and Masters’ degree Organ with improvisation (both summa cum laude), a first-grade qualification as church musician and a Bachelor and Masters’ degree Choir Direction (with honours).
He won the First Prize at the international organ competition ‘Agati-Tronci’ in Pistoia (Italy), the second prize at the international Schnitger competition in Alkmaar, the Litaize Award at the international César Franck competition in Haarlem and the Public Award at the improvisation competition in Dudelange (Luxemburg).
