Which writing skills do your students struggle with the most?

I teach 3rd grade and I feel the one thing they struggle most with is staying on topic. They start off great and then add random information that does not go with their paragraph topic.

@@KellyHughes13 I totally agree! I plan to make a video on this over the summer.

I've been a member of Simplify Writing for a couple of years now and didn't realize you had CZcams videos! This is great! I'm so grateful to have access to such great resources. =)

It’s good to see you over here! I just started publishing consistently on CZcams about a month ago, so it’s pretty new to me too!

Thank you, April. I found your video really informative. My students are struggling with writing stamina and paragraph writing.

My students are still struggling with conventions, hooking the reader, and remaining on topic. A lot of the times, their writing tends to start off well, but drifts to unrelated topics.

I’ve definitely experienced this as well. I have it on my list to make a video lesson about staying on topic!

Years ago, I went to a PD where this idea was introduced. The presenter then though, had kids count the number of words they had on the page and chart it. Just to show them they can get words on the page. Would you suggest that too?

    • @AprilSmith

I’m not against this idea, but it would take more time to count the words. If you have a group of students who pause and get distracted a lot, I’d highly recommend tracking the minutes instead.

Do you have any extra special interventions for low incidence special needs students?

    • @AprilSmith

I don’t have any specific to low incidence special needs, but many of these are use to support those students.
