- In July 1975 Ghatak commenced shooting on the sculptor at Shantiniketan for a stretch of four days. The movie is a biographical (personality study) film where Baij has been featured as a political icon too. In the film, Ramkinkar Baij speaks about the problems that he faces in his life. He speaks about how he has shielded his dripping roof with his oil paintings. Ghatak asks him what he is going to do for the show that is coming soon. Ramkinkar answers to this question: “As the paintings are made by oil on canvas water will not do any damage to them. I can pull them out for the show. But my worry is what I will replace them with to stop the rainwater. It costs hundred rupees to buy grass for thatching. It is very expensive.
Professor R. Siva Kumar, an authority on the Santiniketan School of Art[3][4] wrote, "Ramkinkar Baij was born on the 25th May 1906 in Bankura in West Bengal, into a family of little economic and social standing, and grew, by the sheer dint of talent and determination, into one of the most distinguished early modernists in Indian art. As a young boy he grew up watching local craftsmen and image-makers at work; and making small clay figurines and paintings with whatever came his way. His talent, prodigious for his age, attracted the attention of local people, especially of the nationalists with whom he was associated. This led him in 1925, on the advice of Ramananda Chatterjee the nationalist publisher and apologist for the new Indian art movement, to mark his way to Kala Bhavana, the art school at Santiniketan. At Santiniketan, under the guidance of Nandalal Bose and encouraged by its liberating intellectual environment, shaped by Rabindranath Tagore, his artistic skills and intellectual horizons acquired new depth and complexity. Soon after completing his studies at Kala Bhavana he became a member of its faculty, and along with Nandalal and Benodebehari Mujhrejee played a decisive role in making Santiniketan the most important centre for modern art in pre-Independent India.Ramkinkar Baij responded to the natural zest for life, and took a great interest in human figures, body language, and in the general human drama. Modern Western art and pre and post-classical Indian art were his main point of reference. He used local material advantageously, and worked combining the skills of a modeller and a carver. His paintings too take on expressionist dimensions like his sculptures, which are filled with force and vitality. While Baij was making a portrait of Tagore, during one sitting, the old poet advised him to approach the subject as a tiger and through the observation suck into its blood. After this, in Baij’s own words, he “did not look back”.
Some of his sculptures are preserved and displayed at locations including Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, Late Rani Chanda Collection & Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta, H.K. Kejriwal Collection & Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, Bangalore, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Reserve Bank of India, New Delhi, Jane and Kito de Boer, Dubai, and the Delhi Art Gallery in New Delhi.

Ramkinkar Baij Documentary by Ritwik Ghatak
No one, I repeat, no one in the whole universe can make a documentary like this except Ritwik babu, so simple, just a couple of friends are talking to each other, so humane, yet so important, its a conversation between two closest souls, yet an interview. Pronam to both the legends.

this is a masterpiece!!

Ghatak is Rude to him.
Actually, this is quite normal to talk like this with friends.
@@MohanMohankst what may be 'normal' to you not normal to others. It's pretty apparent Ghatak thinks since he has a camera he has a more powerful equipment in those days. This docu is a piece of garbage anyways worse than the alcohol he was consuming at that time perhaps.
@@timc9372 that's for sure Ghatak didn't learn and obeyed the colonial British etiquettes properly.
In Bangla, I still don't think it's rude at all.
@@MohanMohankst Ray was bangali too.Did you ever watch him talking like that to anyone?
Tim C you don't understand art and artists
Sad. I am pain to see this poorly done documentary! It is an insult to great sculptor by another great film maker!
PALASHRANJAN BHAUMICK why you are saying poorly ? it was incomplete .
I felt same way. I will say poorly taken interview. The way interviewer taking interview some times it was kind of insulting. I don't care if it was completed then how they would have edited it but what I can see here the way throwing some of the question towards him was disrespectful.
Are you stupid or what?? Ritwik Ghatak and Ramkinkar Baij were great friends and so Ghatak was only joking and teasing him a bit... and it's not an interview, it's a friendly discussion
