    Chinabackers also have different tuners and have a toaster style humbucker in neck position, Rickeys use single coils, the bridge looks just like the horribly designed Rickeys,🤣Sorry they just are, and the tuners on originals have open gear clover leaf pegs , today Chinabackers are sold and advertised as replicas , the best one out there IMO is the Ricky inspired Harley Benton RB414 vintage series bass ,the quality is fair superior and the bridge pickup is an artec alnico 5 pickup, This isn't a Rickenbacker but it looks like one that they should've made.

    The Machine heads are a real give away & as you stated the 5 piece neck.

  • @david_onbass
    @david_onbass Před 4 měsíci +1

    Another give away is that the placement of the front strap button is not correct - it would have been more towards the tip, and it's not the correct type of strap button. Also, in all my years of tracking and watching (as well as owning) 4001's, I've never seen a factory FireGlo with a white pickguard and a black truss cover. They just didn't do that. The pickguard also doesn't appear to be made of the correct material for the year that this 4001 is supposed to be, which would be pre-mid 1975. I base that on the placement of the neck pickup and that it's a toaster style pickup.

    Interesting video, and a great aid to the unwary buyer - thank you for posting this! That is certainly one of the more faithful-looking fakers I've seen. BTW, another little giveaway I noticed, FWIW: the chrome pickup surround on the bridge pup is wrong. The two flat chrome strips where the mounting screws go are not sufficiently different from each other in width (on my own 4003 for example, the wide one is about 17mm wide and the narrow one is 11mm). Also they are the wrong way round (the wider one should be pointing towards the bridge), and I'd suggest that if anyone tried to fit it on the "right" way round, they'd find that the pickup would be offset from the cavity.

    Seem to be confused about a few things if you go on reverb they have a really in-depth very conclusive way to authenticate any Rickenbacker you were right about the double truss rod although the stereo input jack plate does vary widely and was changed four different times with the most modern from 1998 to present having the writing stereo and stereo Sonic on it the name plate having three screws is also a key authenticator but they give you the codes for the serial number and everything right there on reverb so it's a very easy authentication process and if you take off your pickguard the model number on a real Rick will be written inside on the wood

    A counterfeit would have the Rickenbacker truss rod cover (and sticker on the pickguard) Those are sold on AliBaba or whatever that's called. These 1970-80's Japanese Ric clones had their name on the TRC (Ibanez, Aria, Greco, Fernandez, Univox et al) John Hall successfully sued and got a cease-and-desist and they were discontinued. The Greco was almost as good as the original, and Ibanez were hit and miss (especially bolt-on neck models) Someone got a black Rickenbacker TRC and slapped it on this because that color would have never come with a black TRC (only the white "tuxedo" finish had black pickguard and TRC. Calling this a fugazi isn't accurate, it's an import with a fake TRC - only the TRC is counterfeit.

Fake Rickenbackers is nothing new Ibanez and Greco made tons of them back in the 70s. china is pumping tons of terrible fakes out now. if you are buying a Rickenbacker for $300 chances are its fake lol especially if you are buying one off Aliexpress, dont be stupid, just because it shows a real Rickenbacker you are gonna get something completely different and the sellers in China know its too much trouble to send it back so you are screwed.
