- This is the first video of how to build a garden pond in my 'Backyard Garden Pond' series and I am planning to build entire fish pond from treated pine timber. I have used 2x4 or 90x45mm wood to build a frame for the backyard pond which covers all the 4 sides. For the base of the fish pond, I have used 200x50mm treated pine sleepers. To make the fish pond more appealing and add beauty to backyard I have decided to add a glass viewing window to the pond. Glass window will be facing the house so fish in the pond can be seen from the inside of the house.
At this stage I haven't decided if I will be turning it into a goldfish pond or add some native Australian pond fish. However, your suggestion in the comment section will help me in making this tough decision. Garden pond will be followed by some modern landscape of the backyard with some water fall, decking, plants etc., Detailed and step by step article on how to build a garden pond can be found on my blog www.fishaholic.net/2021/09/di.... If you are interested in do it yourself projects then this series might be for you.
Even though I have tried to keep this built cheap, it still cost me quite a lot as sourcing timber these days is not cheap and the screws are expensive too. Melbourne weather is very unpredictable and most of the time it wasn't in my favor. This is not the best garden pond in the backyard but I have put in quite a lot of hours and energy into building this pond. I really hope you will enjoy this video and might inspire some of you to build your own above ground fish pond.

thanks for sharing, I love 👍5, a hug, my friend
Thank you, am glad the frame of pond is built very solid.
Off to an amazing start mate
Thanks gents, did the best I could to make the frame very solid. Hopefully rest of the build will go well.
I can’t wait for next video mate 😁
Thank you Rafael
Built my own after viewing your videos. Very helpful and great detail!! I'm so very pleased and love my new koi viewing window tank. I'll be building more in the future.
Thank you John for sharing your feedback. Very pleased that my video has provided some sort of help. Would be an amazing feeling seeing Koi fish in the pond through the glass.
Fantastic construction idea plan now to build one UK fan
Thanks heaps
Great Video!!!! I can't waIT TO START THIS SUMMER!
It's so relaxing sitting next to the pond every afternoon
I am copying this build . Love it . Cheers .
Thank you Andrew, wish you all the best
Super cool
Thank you friend
Wow thats an epic pond build mate, looking forward to the progress
Thank you Genie, I have been wanting to make a pond for over a year. Finally decided to go ahead and finish building frame of pond.
Amazing DIY 👍
Thank you, glad you like this diy video
nice job !
Thank you for watching this pond video
nice
Thank you
Waiting for the finishi set up of this pond ❤️❤️
Thank you Jasper, bit too much hard work on this pond.
This was a brilliant video mate! Very detailed and easy to follow. I'll be doing my pond exactly the same apart from I want a bottom drain on mine so I will not be boarding the bottom. What glass did you use if you don't mind me asking..
Thanks 😊
Hi Danny, I appreciate your kind feedback. I have used 25mm toughened and laminated glass. Pond is over a year old now with no issues.
Amazing great sharing frd subscription added stay connected with us

Thank you David
What's the maximum length and width you can go to using this method of build?
I think it's brilliant. Proper good job on it mate.
Apologies, Christopher. I am not sure about the Max dims. If I had more space, then I would have gone 3m x 2m pond with front to back bracing at the top centre.
I really love this idea, have watched it loads. Appreciate people posting this sort of content 👍 I wanted to ask you how is the finished pond a year on? Anything you regret doing or may have done differently?
Hi Ben, no regrets so far. Pond is holding up well. The only challenge is excessive sunlight in summer as I haven't built a roof over the pond.
@@Fishaholic fantastic, mate! Great stuff. Im definitely going to steal your ideas and have planned to add a roof to it anyway. Having said that. Where I am from, kent England we don't have enough sun to be to much of a problem 😁
Wish you best of luck with the built
👍👍👍
Thanks heaps mate
How can I calculate the necessary thickness of the boards so that they don't collapse due to the water pressure?
I am not sure, I overkill on everything
Nice looking build mate, looks like it's built to last, it's a good old size what are you planning on stocking it with?
Thank you Heap, probably goldfish. Have limited options since it won't be a heated pond and temp drops under 10 degree Celsius in winter.
I know what you mean, the UK has a rough winter too! Kinda envious of these guys who can keep cichlids in outdoor ponds lol
@@AfricanCichlids must be on very good wages
Hi this is going to sound silly what wood glue did you use mate nice pond im doing one right now as well
I think he used liquid nail. Good stuff.
Looks really strong but aint it a litte over kill? If i would not use gleu and only screws would it be strong enough?
Hi mate, it is too strong for sure. I wanted to build a pond that can stand for years to come. The glue I have used is the cheapest available at bunnings. I have used it in the past and it is extremely strong. You shouldn't have any issue if you decide not to use any glue.
Okr then i get it haha. I want to make something like it, but i want to disassamble in future maybe.
I am for sure using your structure. Thanks for the nice video
@@jambek3773 my Pond is complete now with a glass window and a top filter. Am glad that you found this video helpful. If there is anything you can't find in my videos and want help with your build then am more then happy to assist.
@@Fishaholic is the frame standard 4x2? And what size is it please
Hi mate, frame is 4x2 with treated pine sleepers at the bottom and 100x100 in corners. Don't remember the exact dims but I believe it's 2.2 x 1 x 1 in meters
Great build but what are the demensions of your pond?
Hi mate, pond is 220 x 120 x 110 cm (length x width x high) approximately
@@Fishaholic Thank you for the quick reply and info. Your pond is around the same demensions as mine but your build is for the walls & veiwing window are on point. Goinng to use your design for my pond expansion👍
How much are you expanding your pond. I only have few Oranda and white clouds in mine.

We are building one right now
Wish you all the best
@@Fishaholic that's bud how is all by you this is our new channel
And I'm going to set a viewing window and your video is on of the best On installement the right way
Hi. I am in the UK and want to have this built (I am not good at carpentry). I am wondering about the glass thickness. I want to build the frame 6.5ft but 1.5ft of that will house a pump, so the pond area will be 5ft long, 4ft high and 3ft wide. the glass i was thinking 4ft x 3ft. How thick do I need the glass please.
Hi Lynda, My Pond is slightly bigger than yours but the height is almost the same. I have used a 140cm x 60cm - 25mm 'thickness' toughen laminated glass. Pond has been up for a year now without any issues.
I am not a carpenter and have only basic skills that I learnt from watching videos on CZcams. As long as you have some help, you should be okay. This project will be expensive though due to cost of timber, liner and glass
@@Fishaholic I am going to use recylcled timber to get the cost down. Thank you for your advice. I love your pond. Ive started with a half barrel pond and instantly wanted a bigger one. lol. then I saw your video and that was it. It was doable. Thanks again.
@@lyndahines7554 glad to hear that you like my Pond build. Wish you best of luck
Although I'm a fan of if it's worth doing it's worth over doing fishaholics 25mm toughened laminated glass is overkill for something that size. I'm not knocking it if it's available and you can afford it the thicker the better but realistically 25mm glass is going to be literally bullet proof and therefore very expensive. I've been out of the glass industry about 17 years but my recommendation would be 7.3mm toughened laminate. It's made up of a 5mm piece of toughened glass a 0.3mm plastic and then a 2mm piece of normal glass. You want to mount it with the 5mm piece on the inside. Even 7.3mm laminate isn't cheap but it's far more readily available and sensibly priced and should be strong enough to hold what you want it to 😊
I completely agree with you, Ricky. Pond Glass was $ 784, which was expensive back then and will be more expensive now due to inflation.
Hi mate, do you sell the plans for this at all?
Hi Chris, I only sketched it on a paper before the built and kept changing the plan during the build. If you watch all the videos then it should suffice your requirements
@@Fishaholic No bother, just thought I'd ask. I'll just follow the video👍
@@ChrisHibs1875 I have used more wood, glue, nails and stuff then what is required just to ensure pond lasts for over a decade. The whole project cost me around 4 grand with filtration and lighting etc
What was the total cost of this build?
Approximately AUD 4500 for the pond with filtration.
