Is Becoming an Expat Worth It or Should we Stick to Slow Travel?

- Why don't we just move here? That's the question we ask ourselves whenever we travel to an amazing new city. Maybe it's worth it for great weather, better health care, or a lower cost of living. But not everything is as picture perfect as it seems on the surface. And becoming an expat in a new country takes a lot of work. So how does living as an expat compare to slow traveling around the world? And why do we keep choosing slow travel instead?

Excellent video. Thank you. We are 66YO retired educators visiting Poland and Estonia after helping a new school open in Lviv. We are seriously thinking of selling our Portland condo and moving to Europe because the quality of life (Numbeo's 2024) is better in Europe than in the US. Is renting a better option than owning a home for expats? We always wanted to own, but now it seems that putting the cash in CDs is wiser than purchasing a home. Plus the healthcare is better in Europe than in the US. Your thoughts? Dean & Cindy

For buying vs renting, there are so many considerations. I don't know anything about the real estate market in Poland and Estonia, but I would be looking at what the returns on investment are there, how your home ownership rights are or aren't protected, and what the re-sale market is like. And these are just a few examples. And regardless of where you're thinking of living, you need to also think of your financial plan in general, where you want your investments to be, and if you plan on using the money from the sale of your home to live your later years.
Personally, I would want to know a lot about the place I'm moving to before investing any significant amount of money there.

I have lived overseas for the past 7 years. I now view renting a residence as an investment in good information. No matter how much you investigate you can always find a more desirable place to live later.
