Video update of my mechpit in its current state. I mention in the video that the keyboard is almost required to play. What I meant by that is that it is required to communicate with the team, not to pilot the mech.
I think as far as playerbase they're largely capped out. It's going to take game-level initiative for that to change, such as work in making anything more than the skirmish experience appealing/regular.
There was a star wars imperial Walker or flight sim video game (usually at upscale theaters or theme parks) that simulated cockpit movement. It shouldnt be too hard to incorporate or adapt the expensive driving sim cockpits.
...just when I thought I had everything I wanted. Haha. You've inspired me sir. Good job man. Also nice to see some mechwarriors are still using a stick.
So glad to see others playing the way its meant to be played. One hand with a joystick and one hand a mouse is not natural feeling at all. I learned to play mechwarrior at 8 years with a joystick and throttle, but I bet if I had tried with a joystick and mouse at that age I just would have got frustrated and put the game down.
OH my god. I need one of these please... Im a huge fan of MWO and i really would love something like this. man this is so cool. feels like your in a real mech
That’s pretty awesome. Now you just need a vr headset to put you in the mech, or build a blackout room around your setup with a couple flickering lights.
Dude this is so cool I've been dreaming of making somthing like this. can you make a video or a link on how you made it? it would be a dream come true to copy what you made here I just have no idea how to start or complete it. Please please tell me how you did all of this!
Just a note: If you don't have TARGET compatible joystick, you can use FreePIE as an alternative. Quick tutorial can be found from the joystick thread of MWO forums: mwomercs.com/forums/topic/62571-all-joystick-users/page__st__320__p__4840937#entry4840937
Great setup, I have a similar setup for Flight/Racing titles with ButtKickers and motion platform. It's amazing what setups like this can do as they transform the game/experience. Question - on your throttle does it have a center bump? I have the Thrustmaster Warthog which doesn't. I can't see a way to make the throttle 0->100 (with a modifier key for reverse). -100->0->100 is just horrible with my throttle, idea on a fix?
Okay, fair enough. Honestly I'll admit I've not tried setting a larger deadzone but could absolutely see how that would help. That way you have a much larger area to stop in, hmmmm gonna have to give that a go.
When i found hawken, i wanted to build exactly this setup. I stayed away from MWO for a long time due to alot of perceived negativity going on. Long story short, hawken died, I decided to make my own judgement on MWO (and currently love it) and have now decided to attempt to revamp my cockpit build. Like i said, this is exactly the dot on the "i" setup i had envisioned for my cockpit and would love and really appreciate if you shared some info on the build.
Actually, I found his thread on the MWO forums, i havent found any code though but I believe it was a teensy++ that was used for the toggles and switches mwomercs.com/forums/topic/135323-fousts-mechpit-rev-3/
Yeah that is the build thread. If you follow the link at the top of that thread to the first revision it shows the teensy++ and has links to the generic hid application that I used to program it. I then use a application called xpadder to handle making the toggles act as a momentary switch. And thank you for the kind words, they are appreciated.
Gary Cifers Don Richardson Yeah I went hunting in the forums and found it. Hopefully I will be starting on my own pit after we get this upcoming move out of the way. Your threads and Loc Nars have caused me to get nothing done at work for the last hour or so.... Oh well! Thanks for documenting everything and putting it out there!
You would have to aim a camera at it or maybe some software to capture a section of the screen and then send that to a tablet or monitor. There is no provision in MWO to "export" the battlegrid or any of the other displays.
How did you get the pedals to work alongside the stick? Are they aviator pedals made as part of the set? Do you think I could do the same thing with pedals from a steering wheel set?
Even with blinds, the window must've given you disruptive lighting at least a few times over the years. That's my own experience from living in a hot and sunny place though.
There are way to many variables in that for me to even hazard a guess. I mean just for a hotas you are talking a swing in price from $50 on up to $400+
Hi, are you still using this? If you are, is the joystick you set for mouse emulation through thrustmaster's software working out well for you accuracy-wise? Thanks and congrats on the awesome pit, I'd love to build one myself.
+Ale Ale Yes I still use it. Yes I am using thrustmaster's software to handle the mouse emulation. As far as accuracy goes I have a video of me playing on the mwomercs.com forums in the joystick thread.
The trick to that was taking MWO's joystick configuration out of the equation completely. To MWO the joystick looked just like a mouse. I used thrustmasters TARGET software to make that work.
Yes I did. MWO does not have the ability to display the tac map independently. The best I ever got to was a zoom in on the mini map sent to a tablet. It looked bad and it was laggy. Same story when I tried to use a tablet as the panels instead of the switch panels, when it worked it was laggy and was a giant pain to setup. Which is really the long and short of the sim pit. Nothing in MWO is designed around the idea of a simulation. So everything that you try to do to make it more sim like is making it harder on yourself to just play the game.
Dismantled. It had a few revisions past the one in the video, but I ended up playing more games that weren't MWO in it than I was playing MWO so it was time for it to go.
Hell yeah, awesome setup. I need to find those side panels you used. This is my current setup. czcams.com/video/2M0Kx3_jrYU/video.html I went for the Japanese gundam pod feel.
As a high tier player I honestly would not use anything other than a mouse for pin point aiming. A mouse is the most accurate and precise form of controll for any shooter and at high level play you need to be able to pin point very small components. Your set up would be ok for just messing around in quick play though I suppose...
So you made a comment on a sim cockpit to give your opinion on mouse control, while also assuming that I was not a high tier player? Thanks for your input?
super cool setup, just wish the guys at MWO put more money into marketing so there was a bigger player base.
I think as far as playerbase they're largely capped out. It's going to take game-level initiative for that to change, such as work in making anything more than the skirmish experience appealing/regular.
it would be super cool to feel that the chair was simulating the movement of the robot
There was a star wars imperial Walker or flight sim video game (usually at upscale theaters or theme parks) that simulated cockpit movement. It shouldnt be too hard to incorporate or adapt the expensive driving sim cockpits.
Just build this whole gig on top of a ball pivot in the center of balance and throw a couple linear actuators on two corners
...just when I thought I had everything I wanted. Haha. You've inspired me sir. Good job man. Also nice to see some mechwarriors are still using a stick.
This is an awesome set-up. Lot of time and love went into this creation.
Well done sir. That's freaking awesome.
You can increase the dead zone setting on your stick to clear up that twitch when centered.
Louie Merwin I play it with mouse and keyboard and it is frustrating.
I do just fine with mouse and keyboard, but, that's what I'm used to. I started with MWO.
I play left hand Joystick and right hand mouse. czcams.com/video/gCvp_2d7mRE/video.html
I can play MW just fine with kb+mouse. My aim is way better thanks to mouse precision.
OH my god. I need one of these please...

This is a really impressive setup
That’s pretty awesome. Now you just need a vr headset to put you in the mech, or build a blackout room around your setup with a couple flickering lights.
Amazing pit !
This looks badass, good job dude!
Nice job with this. Hoping to see more updates in the future!
Just one word: EPIC!

Would love to see the 2021 set up
neat
i'm try'n to set up a duel stick set up using vkb's and i cannot get it to recognize the sticks .
Hate using Joystick setups. But this is cool.
What did you use to interface the buttons and switches with your computer??
I would love to build one!

I want to build one of these too! But there's not enough room in the house for it. :(

My throttle does not have a center stop. It became muscle memory and a generous center dead zone that I ended up with.
Okay, fair enough. Honestly I'll admit I've not tried setting a larger deadzone but could absolutely see how that would help. That way you have a much larger area to stop in, hmmmm gonna have to give that a go.

I second this request. Do you have a build thread? More curious about the toggles and how you got them to interface with the game/computer. Thanks!

Is there any way to get the battle grid to show up on a tablet or attached monitor separately from the main screen?
You would have to aim a camera at it or maybe some software to capture a section of the screen and then send that to a tablet or monitor. There is no provision in MWO to "export" the battlegrid or any of the other displays.
How did you get the pedals to work alongside the stick? Are they aviator pedals made as part of the set? Do you think I could do the same thing with pedals from a steering wheel set?
Jonasan-san they were from a old thrustmaster set I wired to one of the axis on the t16000m
Even with blinds, the window must've given you disruptive lighting at least a few times over the years.
That's my own experience from living in a hot and sunny place though.
broooo, soooo cool, how did you change the sensitivity wiht one botton?
im wanting to build a simpit that works as if I was in the pit of a mech whats a ruff estimate cost wise for something like that

What toggle switches are you using?
so how did u build the toggle switches??
what program do you use to make the joystick function as the mouse cursor? Im trying to make my own sim pit and nothing i use seems to work.
+Autumn2552 I use thrustmaster's joystick profiler software T.A.R.G.E.T
I want to see his 2021 mech pit.
Omg
Wonderful setup~ how do you eliminate the deadzone of joystick & rudder? I have a huge deadzone even if I set the "deadzone" option in settings to 0.
The trick to that was taking MWO's joystick configuration out of the equation completely. To MWO the joystick looked just like a mouse. I used thrustmasters TARGET software to make that work.
@@Fousticle Appreciated for the detailed coatching, it works fantastic
I am curious how this pit looks nowadays
You think about using a tablet you send the Tac. Map too so you don't have to hit a button to see it?
Yes I did. MWO does not have the ability to display the tac map independently. The best I ever got to was a zoom in on the mini map sent to a tablet. It looked bad and it was laggy. Same story when I tried to use a tablet as the panels instead of the switch panels, when it worked it was laggy and was a giant pain to setup.

add native VR support and im buying one too, despite the game being owned and operated by PGI.
wheres the self destruct button, oh wait that was Mechwarrior 2 and mercenaires
I know shouting into the past might not work, but do you have a list of settings, software, and hardware you used to pull this off?
I put most of that kind of information here:

@@Fousticle Thank you!
This is sick af, dude. You still play?
very inmersive setup, It hurts that the cabin screens are not functional to be able to play without hud
Up next, trackir 5. A pit is not complete without head tracking!!
Would be nice to have head tracking for arm mounts

did you make your own toggles and buttons
I bought the toggle switches and buttons, but I built the panels. You can see the work here: mwomercs.com/forums/topic/135323-fousts-mechpit-rev-3/
Faust. Where ya hiding?
Where did you get the panels?
