Hmmmm, I'm 57. I've suffered with pneumonia and bronchitis and asthma from childhood. They didn't have this stuff when I was young and a dust mask was not something that was ever even seen in a shop. Probably not much sense spending that kind of money on myself now as any damage is already done. Having said that I would like to urge all youth to use this type of protection because a life of lung problems is no fun at all. Trust me. AND they look really cool, like something from "Halo" .

Yeah I hear you. I'm coming up on 40 now and had athsma with severe dust and fume sensitivity since my late 20s.
I have had a lot of jobs where dust became an issue and currently work at a dusty paint warehouse. Money is decent because of hazmat pay.
I had to quit other good paying jobs because of the dust.
I've lasted at this job because I was introduced to paint respirators with added dust filters and they made a huge difference for me. I'd be dying at work otherwise.
Covid just got me more aware of the PPE available and I'm kicking myself for not investing in one of these. Now there is a shortage.
The rubber respirators are great but leave marks on the face and get uncomfortable.
I definitely see the value in saving your lungs, this would do a better job and not leave permanent lines on my face from years of use.

the damage may be done but you can still slow the progression!! I would still highly recommend you invest in some quality PPE if you are still frequently exposed to dust etc.

Hint: These are the only option for guys with a beard. Standard masks (tight seal) don't work even with stubbles, 3M actually recommends a clean shave 8 hours before the workshift. In short: bearded guys only can use masks with a "loose seal", that'll be powered systems that push the air out of the mask like the Versaflo. ;-)

  • @raytracer5726
    @raytracer5726 Před 4 lety +3

I've recently acquired a TR-600 kit (it has bigger filters, and more filter options to protect against vapours).
This is really without a doubt the best investment I've ever done, I should have bought it much sooner. I earn money with my woodwork, so it will quickly pay off.
You are saying it's not giving you extra protection then the standard half mask - I completely disagree. On paper it gives 50x reduction in dust particles, while a standard half mask is around 10x.
Because it creates high pressure area inside the helmet, the dust simply can not enter it (despite it being not airtight) - while a half mask must rely on being airtight, which it will not be, so a lot of dust enters it anyway, especially if you have even small amounts of facial hair.
But in practice it's even worse because I just could not work extended periods of time wearing a simple mask, so I had to remove it from time to time, but then I would end up breathing a lot of dust (even though it seemed like all the dust has cleared).
Also, there are a lot of tasks that produce low dust, so I wouldn't bother putting the halfmask on because of the discomfort, and again I would breathe dust. Or the tasks that require a lot of movement, which made breathing harder and more fog build up on the goggles.
This thing, I don't have to remove at all and it's comfortable for any task, which means I never have to deal with any dust unprotected.
Another important factor often overlooked, is the protection of the eyes from dust. All goggles must have some kind of ventilation to minimize the fog building up, which means fine particles will enter the goggles and end up in your eyes. This one does not, and completely protects your eyes from dust.
If you are a hobbyist, working with dust just now and then, a half mask is fine. But if have to deal with dust on daily basis, then this thing is an absolute must. I can't imagine working without it now.

Actually it does provide a higher level of protection than a standard half mask according to the NIOSH Assigned protection factors. A loose fitting PAPR or PAPR hood provides an APF of 25 while a half mask is only 10. A full face air purifying respirator provides an APF of 50. There are of course exceptions to the rule if the manufacturer can prove it provides a greater protection factor and get NIOSH approval. For example the PAPR I use at work as an APF of 1000 with a hood because of this.

@@forestwolf60 i know for the gvp series, there is an optional accessory that allows hooking the power up to a different source, generally a vehicle (I'm saving up to get one and try connecting it to my Makita batteries, fast recharge and higher energy density - plus the oem nicad batteries are like $300 new [!] for extras/replacements). I'm not kidding - they have their configuration matrix as a series of rather large flowchart type maps, and it's quite a few pages long (just the pics and model numbers with lines showing standard acceptable configurations; detailed info on the actual items is a separate lookup.) It's kind of crazy! Also, with some models, there are elevation restrictions (model x below some thousand ft, model y is ok up to some other elevation - is been a couple years so I don't recall the actual limits). These are a sizable investment, not just in money, but also in educating yourself so you buy something actually compatible with your specific requirements. BUT: absolutely worth it, IMHO.

All papr systems are expensive. His price actually isn't bad. I assume you are paying for r&d, long term testing, and certifications. They sell these systems to work in some pretty severe scenarios, so I'd imagine there's a fair bit of liability they carry as well. Think asbestos abatement, lead abatement, super harsh painting and coatings, working with chemicals, they are honestly worth it. That said, watch eBay and you can usually find a couple used ones in good condition for a pretty steep discount. Just make sure you inspect the hell out of it and get new filters!

It's actually very reasonable. A fee of an independent contractor is about 50 euro/hour here in Belgium. Which would be about 400 euro a day. (before tax, not including other expenses).
A working professional can pay it off in less than a week.
So yeah, all things considered the price of this thing is nothing in comparison to your health.

A regular shop respirator costs $35. A set of earmuffs costs like $20. I'd say $300 bucks would be reasonable for this thing. $1400 is piracy.

Could just buy a mask, 3d print the helmet, buy some muffs, 3d print the attachment, get the metal spring clips, and make your own vacuum / blower system with 3d printing, a replacement vacuum hose with quick attach points, etc... and you can even set it up to use your rechargeable drill batteries.
