Moehau Mountain is the sacred resting place of my ancestors. Not a single Maori interviewed, because this story was based a prank from the 1970s', not a part of NZ folklore at all.
Would like to read more of what you have to say. Very interested.
My family are from Kennedy Bay, never heard of the Moehau monster I’m going to ask the whanau

As a 62 yr old New Zealander I've NEVER heard these stories. As a farm girl who knows many hunter's and bush tramper's this video is a first for me.
I have heard of this, try talking to the local Maori, they have stories.
Thank you. I'm a 64-year-old New Zealander and I too have NEVER heard of it. its kaka as far as I'm concerned.
I live in New Zealand, and I am actively looking for these ancient human like people. I have heard stories from the Kauri forests of Northland to the Waitakeries ranges to the coromandle Peninsula the Kiamanawas ranges just to mention a few places and have had my first encounter earlier this year .

I'm a kiwi, and have Maōri ancestry (albeit not from Coromandel hapū), and have never heard of this myth/legend. However I have heard of the "Canterbury Cat", "Kaikōura cougar", "Pukaki Puma" or "Picton Panther". Supposedly a large cat that roams around in the South Island.
Bigfoot and Dogman roam the Deep Woods and Forests of the South Island too *
The Puma- Cougar you are Re-ferring to here could be a Creature Mistaken for a Wolf Like Entity- a Dogman he can get down on all fours as well as Stand Up-right which gives him immense Height of around 7-10ft- Possess Great Strength and is Highly DANGEROUS and Elusive *

I've loved these programmes for years now, thanks to Shiver , they are as much about the place and the people as they are about the legends .
Shiver has some very good documentation on things. Whenever I see one listed I haven't seen, I watch it!
They exist by many different names
Here in emerald victoria Australia
A tradie was in the bush in emerald
He felt something following him in the bush ,he freaked out and ran back to his car, when he went take off he felt his car shake
He looked into his mirror and could only see a huge hair body at the back of his car, couldn't see his head , but took off! There more than stories The information is out there! These things can shift dimensions they say& can effect weather! The smell badly, they tend like throw big sticks & stones
Something about a forest with gigantic ferns has a very ancient feeling.
Good program. I have seen lots of tv shows and movies filmed in New Zealand but never a documentary. Gives me a much better look at the beauty of the country.
Here is an interview from a hunter who has seen Bigfoot in NZ czcams.com/video/CHh5lEIfyt0/video.html
It took over 70 years for humans to discover the giant panda & everyone ridiculed the guy who first witnessed one.
And the mountain gorilla, discovered in the early 1900's (1906?)
They were talked about as in legends.
The Giant Squid was absolutely considered a myth, even when they found sucker marks on Sperm whales that implied they existed. It was only when a body was recovered in the early 90s that they were accepted by modern science

The Coromandel isn't remote enough for the likes of an undiscovered bipedal colossus. I've hunted up and down far more remote places throughout New Zealand and I never heard of a hairy man apart from a legend about a taniwha who was said to have long hair. There are remote places with enough resources to make it technically possible but if there was a breeding population it wouldn't be undiscovered.. it's a regional myth most likely generated by lsd back in the 70's. A lot of marijuana growing in the Coromandel.. it might discourage 2 legged possums from ripping off the local's crops

How'd they survive only so many pigs out there and the waitaks are big but not big enough to be true wilderness
I was lost over night in the west coast bush many years ago and slept on a fern bed I had made.
I woke cold and hungry, as I opened my eyes without moving, something was standing a few feet away and saw my eyes open and it took off straight up a steep heavily forested slope very fast, and made alot of noise crashing thru Thick bush, what ever it was it was heavy.
Deer get big over there, but would not be standing over me watching me sleep, and I know what deer sound like
Running thru the scrub.
This was big and ran thru thick bush like it was nothing, left me confused, got out that day and never thought of it again, untill now!.....
That's very spooky. Your braver than me for even being camping there. Wonder if he was just noseying around. And they have rules about being seen. I bet they do have younger ones who would be more mischievous

Why is something that we don't understand always called a Monster? I fear other Humans out in the Wild more than I fear unknown animals.

Beautifully said and absolutely correct!
Well said. It’s no monster it’s simply a creature that has always been there but is highly elusive. It doesn’t want to be seen.
I’m from Nz and the only monster I’ve heard of is the Taniwha and that’s a lizard type but love to hear something different!
The Maeroero was a wild man of the woods, covered with long hair, and possessed of great strength and craftiness.
According to Maori legend we have our own Bigfoot. It is an old legend of a creature called the Mohau. It is known by many names depending where in NZ you lived (which shows that different cultures lived here who had different names for it otherwise if all arrivals came from Hawaiiki, they'd call it the same thing. Think about that one awhile!). Maori spoke of of mighty ape-men who resided in the forested areas, these areas they dared not venture into as these hairy beasts were known to tear men apart, had huge lacerating fingernails and fed on human flesh. They were known by many names Moehau, Maero, Matau, Tuuhourangi, Taongina, and Rapuwai. The Moehau were describes by the Maori as being “Terrible creatures, half man, half animal”, with a very aggressive temperament, they were only too happy to massacre and eat anyone that strayed into their domain.
They didn't interview one indigenous person of New Zealand!!!!

Their is alot of scared places all over NZ just that people has not explore these places or even heard of it since moving in the far north I have found out that their is alot of sacred places up here that I didn't know NGAPUHI are very spiritual people
In America they have such a thing called a Thunderbird.....These birds have been reported by hunters with wingspans of between 20 and 50 feet, yet despite every person in the country possessing a mobile phone, no bodies managed to get a photo of one of these huge birds ?
coz it's fake a 30-50 ft wingspan will not go unnoticed lol
Ever tried taking a photo of the Moon, or a helicopter on your phone?
The locals keep saying "a gorilla like creature"........mostly these cryptids are described as "ape like creatures" any ways whatever it is it almost certainly arrives and leaves through portals.
I'd say your correct on that. I've read they live in 2 dimensions. I've seen yowie hunting footage in Australia where they sense this acrid burnt smell. I think it's when they re-enter our world this happens.
Are they the same portals used by you by your logic?
I have recordings of these beings and they call themselves "the Bigfoot people" they know what we call them... (digging into the mystery) czcams.com/video/SbRBe-FF1-U/video.html here are some of the recordings...
I don't know why so many make a big scene about them. They have been here before us. Maybe we should pay attention and learn from them, in every country.

Born and bred from Coromandel I have pig hunted and possum eradicated for D.O.C and my IWI almost the entire Coromandel Peninsula. I have had years of eradicating possums on Moehau and have covered most of it. I'm Tangata Whenua and my grandmother was born in Waiaro below Moehau. I have heard her talk about the Patuparaehe when she was a young girl. I have heard of the Moehau Monster as a child myself but I was told as I got older that it was a dope grower story to keep people out of the bush. I would also like to say that Moehau is a very sacred Mountain to my People and everyone from the area. Please do not go up into the Mountain looking for this Monster it's not real and you will be told to please go away but not in a very nice way. It's also a very dangerous Mountain and people have died on it. You have been warned
The oral history pre dates European arrival. Theres history of it in the wanganui region where early maori explorers were said to have encountered them...believe it or not
Therein lies the problem with monster tales....the maoris have said they encountered this particular one but what they say and what is the truth may be far from each other...

I've known about them for years, some places in NZ are actually named after them just like in the US. Pukemaeroero is one of many. You need to dig deep and explore Maori stories too. These beings were discounted by late settlers, names of places change in time and they slowly moved to the realm of myths and legends...
These things seem to be able to scream like a woman, according to some reports in the USA. I heard a very loud woman type scream in the old Howard gold fields, in the South island. It was in very heavy bush. Quite a distance from me. I wasnt going to investigate it. A few years later, about 50 miles south of this location, i was standing on a narrow trail high above a river, with 3 friends. We all heard very loud foot steps coming our way. I yelled out. It stopped. We left the area. We never saw anything.
I interviewed a hunter who told me about him and his mate where camping in wild bush and heard this human scream next to their tent in wild bush. I'm finishing up a documentary with interaction in it and its quite shocking. How much I show to the public I'm struggling with. My goal is to record them and understand who they are. So far I am pretty surprised though most of humanity is unaware of what happens in the wild places. I also interviewed a ranger who talked about footsteps too etc.
