Let me confirm my friend the Moahau is real and all its story's, I'm a native Māori and they are mentioned plenty of times in Te Ao Māori story's. They hang around our Maunga and Awas ( Mountains and Rivers ). They are one of the oldest races and I mean ancient ancient.
Not this rubbish that we are taught in Kura ( School ) about us evolving from Ape to Man?? Pffft what a load of junk.
It goes like this we are Humans and they are ( Them ) too separate beings.
I know a place up in the Mangatawhiri Dam that would change your views on them if you were to spend a night a lone up there.
My people co existed with them, you would not believe where the ( side tongue) came from in the Pukana we do. Another day for that story.

The Coromandel isn't remote enough for the likes of an undiscovered bipedal colossus. I've hunted up and down far more remote places throughout New Zealand and I never heard of a hairy man apart from a legend about a taniwha who was said to have long hair. There are remote places with enough resources to make it technically possible but if there was a breeding population it wouldn't be undiscovered.. it's a regional myth most likely generated by lsd back in the 70's. The Maeroero was a wild man of the woods, covered with long hair, and possessed of great strength and craftiness.
According to Maori legend we have our own Bigfoot. It is an old legend of a creature called the Mohau. It is known by many names depending where in NZ you lived (which shows that different cultures lived here who had different names for it otherwise if all arrivals came from Hawaiiki, they'd call it the same thing. Think about that one awhile!). Maori spoke of of mighty ape-men who resided in the forested areas, these areas they dared not venture into as these hairy beasts were known to tear men apart, had huge lacerating fingernails and fed on human flesh. They were known by many names Moehau, Maero, Matau, Tuuhourangi, Taongina, and Rapuwai. The Moehau were describes by the Maori as being “Terrible creatures, half man, half animal”, with a very aggressive temperament, they were only too happy to massacre and eat anyone that strayed into their domain.

I have heard her talk about the Patuparaehe when she was a young girl. I have heard of the Moehau Monster as a child myself but I was told as I got older that it was a dope grower story to keep people out of the bush. I would also like to say that Moehau is a very sacred Mountain to my People and everyone from the area. Please do not go up into the Mountain looking for this Monster it's not real and you will be told to please go away but not in a very nice way. These things seem to be able to scream like a woman, according to some reports in the USA. I heard a very loud woman type scream in the old Howard gold fields, in the South island. It was in very heavy bush. Quite a distance from me. I wasnt going to investigate it. A few years later, about 50 miles south of this location, i was standing on a narrow trail high above a river, with 3 friends. We all heard very loud foot steps coming our way. I yelled out. It stopped. We left the area. We never saw anything.

So far I am pretty surprised though most of humanity is unaware of what happens in the wild places. I also interviewed a ranger who talked about footsteps too etc.
