This is a video of a press conference where Microsoft was introducing the upcoming Xbox game system. It also includes some early footage of Halo and other games.
man 2001 was the craziest and best year of my life. 8th grader going in to freshmen year. everything was so new and the world seemed so adventurous and positive to me. so many changes and Friends made. the og xbox coming out was the fuckin shit.
I was watching those two boys playing Halo with the Duke controllers, and all that ran through my mind was, "Let go, let go! Save your hands, SAVE YOUR HANDS!"
and microsoft said quite clearly that the reveal was to showcase the console's all in one capabilities. E3 is to show off the gaming side. Including 15 launch titles.
Off the heels of the Xbox One event and on our way into E3 2013, looking back on this was very refreshing. Some tech that actually worked and didn't have features geared to piss off the consumers that keep them in business, and less trend-grabbing. The execs presenting talk to their customers like smart people, not idiots, and they even joke around with each other on stage like the real people they are. Less posturing, more legitmacy.
This is an early alpha/demo version of the game, and the controls were different than the released game. Also, production Xbox's didn't exist yet, the game is actually running on a development kit hiding somewhere off camera. The 'Xbox' is just a prototype shell.
It was a smart move for Microsoft to make a game console and they were right about online gaming is the future and I love halo great job Microsoft couldn't live with out my Xbox 360
It was from a studio tape that a game collector had and wanted to see what was on it. We were looking for the alpha build of Halo (which is seen in this video). I just posted the video so we could share what was on the tape with other game collectors/fans.
Have you edited the video? I would live to see the whole press conference, i just can't find anything related to the 2001 E3 Press Conference of Microsoft... Would really be glad if you could upload the whole video.... =]
Listen more carefully next time, he said there will be 50-100% more available at launch. One issue with console launches is constrained supply. They managed to make a whole lot available for launch. They knew they joined too late to be the sales leader, they just wanted to get their foot in the door. Which obviously, has worked for them.
Actually, there was no point at all when they considered giving up. The Xbox plan was a multi-generation plan. There are entire books written on this subject, I suggest you check those out.
1 Fact we can’t disagree or lie: Xbox was the first home console to come with online and dvd capability. Edit they made other consoles with DVD’s and online but they failed and stopped making systems with those capability. Xbox was the the first successful console built in with such texture and had no problem with it.
One reason why PS2 has sold so much more is due to the fact PS2 are still being made and sold in 2012 while xbox stopped being made by the time the 360 came out.
to expand the fanbase i suppose? i mean im most excited for the gaming but ill give the other features a try either way... who knows it may turn out good... i truly believe drm is the future and could really benefit those who work hard on the games we play... its a new idea on consoles so they wanted to see how people felt about it... personally i thought it was a great idea but hey maybe later in the future it makes a welcomed comeback...
I can even be an example of used games working: I wasn't into console gaming until Xbox, about 3 years after it's release. A friend gave me his old Xbox & a copy of a game called Halo (never heard of it). I love Halo, and have since bought (on release day, at full price) Halo PC, Halo 2, Halo 2 PC, a 360 just to play Halo 3, Halo Reach, and new 360 just to play Halo 4 (wanted the special console). So for giving me a 3-yo game, Microsoft has made over $1000 off me just on Halo.
I'm here because I want 2 take a trip down memory lane...and I own all 3 "Xbox Consoles " which I'm sure almost every other person that watched this video is or at least own the first 2 consoles...but with that said Microsoft where the 1st one's 2 target the online gamers and made it the now "Standard Of Gaming" and 13yrs later it's still the must have "Standard"
I have watched both PS4's and Xbox's game lineups at E3 this year, and I have to say that, for once, Xbox's actually looked better. Deadrising 3, The Witcher 3, Forza 5, Halo 5, Ryse: Son of Rome, Project Spark, and Quantum Break, were the major titles introduced. Some of these games are being made by studios like, 343 Industries, Crytek, Turn 10 Studios, Remedy, DICE, Capcom and Insomniac Games. The only highlights that PS4 had were Killzone, Infamous, The Order, and Driveclub.
Search CZcams for 1998 philips flat tv You can find many of their commercials for their 1990's era models, that were available to the public at that time. And again, I'm sure cost isn't an issue for Microsoft. Of course they wanted to show off their new tech in the flashiest way possible...
LCD TVs originally came out in 1988 (though not as big as the one in the video) and plasmas came out in 1997. So, yes, a flat screen TV in 2001 is no big deal...
Actually it did work, it wasn't meant to be profitable, like I said the only purpose was to get their foot in the door, it takes money to make money. It was an investment that not only paid off on the bottom line, but it also increased the company's mindshare and goodwill.
man i miss xbox, where it was all about the games. microsoft was on a great path, then they fell off a cliff and focused on one thing. sports, sports here sports there football, football, football god they took a massive drop now
Yeah, I have no doubt this wasn't a cheap TV... :) There's also a good chance it's a prototype loaned to Microsoft in exchange for advertising the brand all over their E3 booth or something. They could always be seen at places like E3 long before anyone you actually knew had one...
+Typical British Guy thank xbox for what? xbox has never won any console generation. failed to the ps2, failed to the nintendo wii, and is now failing to the PS4, LMAO!
H20Gotti They do thank them for online support. And actually no the OGXOBX shat on the PS2 when it was lunched. Along side halo 2 having the best multiplayer at the time. I think the OGXBOX destroyed the PS2. P.S before you come out with some "you a xbox fanboy and you're a fagget" No I'm not. I own a ps1,2,3, OGXOBX, xbox 360, xb1, NES, SNES and the Gameboy. So please let's have a normal argument if where to have one.
_Just_ sports? Are you kidding? You missed the most important things about the new Xbox: TV, Television... Oh, and TV! That's apparently what everyone wants in a game system these days... :) And to have it look like an 80's Betamax player...
Wow the Xbox One is looking real nice Don't know why they are re-releasing halo 1 though, we've already played that and the HD versi- oh This isn't Xbox One, this is the Xbox one my mistake
But it depends entirely on how they handle the DRM... For $60 the game needs to be able to be freely sold/traded/given away. At that price point, the game makers have built in payment for the loss of resales. If resales are blocked completely, they need to be selling games no higher than $30. I simply don't see that happening. Many people just can't afford to pay full price for every game they want, used games allow that. Microsoft made no mention of reducing the price of DRM'd games.
I think Sony is still holding back a ton of Exclusives to either announce for next year, or later on before the launch... They won the show with that price as it was... They haven't given any news as to what studios like Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, or the other 10 Sony studios are working on... I think in the end, as always Sony will have the better Exclusives of the bunch... Just hope Microsoft puts Halo back on PC too so I can play my Sony games on PS4 and Xbox games on my PC!
Nope, you are wrong. The first LCD TV came out in 1988 (14" sized and not HD). Philips and Pioneer both had Plasma TVs on the market in 1997/1998, and 16x9 LCDs starting coming out shortly after (before 2000). And if that's when the public could get them, you know Microsoft/corporations could get them much earlier. And do you really think Microsoft cares about the cost? I'm pretty sure Gates could afford it. This video was made in 2001, so not sure what you are trying to say...
No they would have, trust me. Used games have been the scourge of the industry for years. We are moving towards a future where everything is digital, and nothing will be shared or traded because those systems won't be put in place. In the end, we need to let it happen as quick as possible, otherwise the transition will be so much more painful than it already is. And most of the money from the used games fee goes to the game developer, not Microsoft.
I have only original xbox modded not a 360 because my last one got the old rrod, I have a wii and original modded xbox now and I'm not getting another Microsoft console any time soon
And thus they completely miss the gaming market... Gamers don't want an all-in-one system, they want a game system... The fact that the system will stop playing games if it's offline for more than a day but will still 'play blu-ray and DVDs' just proves who they are really targeting this to. Now there's rumors flying around that MS is paying people to write good reviews and bribing 3rd parties to not show games on PS4 at E3...
man 2001 was the craziest and best year of my life. 8th grader going in to freshmen year. everything was so new and the world seemed so adventurous and positive to me. so many changes and Friends made. the og xbox coming out was the fuckin shit.
"we think the online capability will be the future of video games"
Shit your right about that.
Halo 1 launching on the original Xbox holding no online capabilities at all just sounds so wrong now.
Usul573
Give launch titles some slack.
I was watching those two boys playing Halo with the Duke controllers, and all that ran through my mind was,
"Let go, let go! Save your hands, SAVE YOUR HANDS!"
Has anyone managed to get a hold of the full press conference? I would love to see it.
It's out!? Wow finally!!
Ah, I remember going to LAN parties at a friends house and playing 4v4 on blood gulch....good times :')
This is Awesome!!!
I felt more hyped watching this, then e3 2019
lmao true
yeah and its an awesome video. thanks! :)
Online focus, HD capable, voice chat, HDD, back in 2001. Man
i was watching 2013 e3 and came to this i must have gone back in time
i remember when I was 6 and my brother got a xbox for his birthday. Thinking about those days just gives me excitement. Xbox 360 just isn't the same

Microsoft hit the nail right on the head.
Look at those graphics, so ahead of there time
and microsoft said quite clearly that the reveal was to showcase the console's all in one capabilities. E3 is to show off the gaming side. Including 15 launch titles.

Less posturing, more legitmacy.
on the halo scene the damn xbox wasnt even plugged in.
the OG Xbox is the best console of 2000 by far
You idiot, OG Xbox wasn't even released in 2000.
The best selling console of the year 2000 was the PS2!
Loved halo on xbox , I could never play online tho :[
It was from a studio tape that a game collector had and wanted to see what was on it. We were looking for the alpha build of Halo (which is seen in this video). I just posted the video so we could share what was on the tape with other game collectors/fans.
hes right,, its our future gaming syystem
Have you edited the video? I would live to see the whole press conference, i just can't find anything related to the 2001 E3 Press Conference of Microsoft... Would really be glad if you could upload the whole video.... =]

Definitely
Too much caffeine or coke.
2020 anyone?
lol this is crazy look back at this, kinda looks like looking back at the corney old NES commercials lol
@fotobianchi Nope, no edits (made by me). It was a studio tape that I transferred, and this is everything that was on it...
Actually, there was no point at all when they considered giving up. The Xbox plan was a multi-generation plan. There are entire books written on this subject, I suggest you check those out.
2:13 what is the other guy doing? are they both playing single player campaign on one screen?
The redhead kid is also mashing on the buttons like a maniac. Something tells me they arent actually playing that game

Just wish they made the Xbox machine looking like the first picture they showed back in the day
Remember the White colored X Xbox ?
One reason why PS2 has sold so much more is due to the fact PS2 are still being made and sold in 2012 while xbox stopped being made by the time the 360 came out.
Can u imagine Years before this they were creating Xbox and had a vision of Xbox Live....
O how right they were, thats some foresight.
@skak8664 Yes, I love it to. It is my favorite controller of all time!
Even funnier that the Xbox wasn't even TURNED ON
i think the xbox was the beast of 2001
dude halo is fucking awesome
to expand the fanbase i suppose? i mean im most excited for the gaming but ill give the other features a try either way... who knows it may turn out good... i truly believe drm is the future and could really benefit those who work hard on the games we play... its a new idea on consoles so they wanted to see how people felt about it... personally i thought it was a great idea but hey maybe later in the future it makes a welcomed comeback...
I Loved my origional xbox, bought it couple weeks after launch, and it in many many was was better than the current gen consoles
it was in sales maybe but it most the most technologically advanced console ever (basing it at the time)
I can even be an example of used games working: I wasn't into console gaming until Xbox, about 3 years after it's release. A friend gave me his old Xbox & a copy of a game called Halo (never heard of it). Only 13 years ago and it looks so old??
Fun Fact: The console wouldn't turn on during the E3 presentation.
I saw oddworld ah the memories

How come the game cases never changed?
But, back then it was cutting edge.
Dat awkward Halo scene and I say that as a die hard Halo fan.
Search CZcams for

The year I was born.... shit why does it look like the 90s
Someone got the full conference?
@koolio415 Saturn actually, it had online chat.

“Pew pew pew pew pew pew”
I still use 2 Duke's :)
Yeah, I have no doubt this wasn't a cheap TV... :) There's also a good chance it's a prototype loaned to Microsoft in exchange for advertising the brand all over their E3 booth or something. They could always be seen at places like E3 long before anyone you actually knew had one...
And thus began the great playstation/xbox war
i love this xbox =D and the xbox 360 too jeje.... ahh and i will love the new xbox 8
$300 for the Xbox?!? Crazy to think about it now in time where you can get one for $10

All the Sony ponys need to thank the OGXBOX.
+Typical British Guy thank xbox for what? xbox has never won any console generation. failed to the ps2, failed to the nintendo wii, and is now failing to the PS4, LMAO!
H20Gotti They do thank them for online support.

H20Gotti and a lot more consle but I can't be bothered to type all it.
H20Gotti plus a pc.
H20Gotti Also I am taking about the OGXBOX not the others.
It's a prototype Xbox, it actually looks like a computer and is sitting somewhere out of camera range. The console you see is just an empty shell...
yeah direct x
Halo was going to be a PC title before Microsoft bought out Bungie.
_Just_ sports? Are you kidding? You missed the most important things about the new Xbox: TV, Television... Oh, and TV! That's apparently what everyone wants in a game system these days... :) And to have it look like an 80's Betamax player...

Wow the Xbox One is looking real nice
Don't know why they are re-releasing halo 1 though, we've already played that and the HD versi-

This isn't Xbox One, this is the Xbox one
my mistake
Read from bottom to top
its funny how microsoft had a good start and know there selling a xbox 1 for 500$ its the end for xbox gaming by the looks

3:38 who is that?

@SwitchBladeUKv1 yeah I'm glad they didn't stick with the original name for the console : directxbox

Xbox wasn't plugged in when those dudes were playing
wow halo 1 & 2 look better than alot of games that come out 2day in 2011.
So what the fuck does this mean? It was really necessary to write "PS4" on a video that has nothing to do with it?
I have only original xbox modded not a 360 because my last one got the old rrod, I have a wii and original modded xbox now and I'm not getting another Microsoft console any time soon

when xbox stopped shipping the ps2 was on 132 million lol
Sweet Donkys look at that controller! Its like they hired Paul Bunyan to design it, way too big (just to fit that stupid Xbox logo jewel in there)
@AceySucks6606 i was just about to comment on this
