Never heard this before. Here in America, we put an open box of baking soda [sodium bicarbonate]
Lot cheaper to use baking soda- also easier to find at times.
It has never worked in the bathroom absorbing odors why would it work in the fridge !!

Once opened, I actually like to store the entire toilet paper package inside the fridge for a full effect ... just remove a roll when needed in the bathroom. You also have the option to return the roll to the fridge after use in the bathroom ... or simply use a toilet paper holder installed in the bathroom.
Now your bottom and toilet smells like fish....

I've never put a roll of TP in my fridge, but I have put a portion of liver and onions down my toilet.
They make small boxes of baking soda just for this. It's cheap... Better than this TP trick.
