To me, this song has always expressed melancholy, longing, regret, and doubt (not a groundbreaking view, considering the lyrics) and has been something of an anthem to some of my own experiences. Since it speaks of the night and being haunted, I’ve also imagined the setting to be dark. But the lighting in the room and your radiant smile at the start-which felt so personal-warmed the tone. And your guitar and voice really softened the edges. There was a sense of reassurance which melted away some of the melancholy. The song still holds that feeling of sadness for me but hearing/watching you sing it, now it’s the type of sadness which one recognizes as containing its own beauty that couldn’t exist without the sadness, you know? Thank you for treating this song with sensitivity and gentleness.
