ahh, the good ol' days. when fighters fought 3 different times in one night. they didn't need a 6-month camp to prepare for one, single opponent. they didn't hold out, refusing to fight certain opponents. and they certainly would never NOT defend the championship. they were damn proud to BE the champion and couldn't wait to defend it and prove they were the best. fedor is probably still one of the only guys left like that. where he doesn't seem to prepare for a specific opponent. he just fights his fight, no matter who he is against.
+Faith Rox not necessarily true. Guys like a prime Royce Gracie, Dan Severn, Marco Ruas, Don Frye, Mark Coleman and Frank Shamrock could have held their own with today's fighters. Hell, Vitor Belfort came from that era and he just BARELY retired 4 nights ago!

+Ann Graziano Dan Severn NEVER did steroids. And there is no proof that a young Royce, Ruas or Frank Shamrock were juicing. Vitor, Coleman and Frye no doubt juiced but so did many others of that era because there were no weight classes, or if any, two weight classes. If they fought in today's era all they would have to do is drop a weight class or two and their skills would still be there.

I met Art Davie and Rorian Gracie at a gun store in Westminster Ca with my dad. My dad was getting a hunting license renewed and Art and Rorian were picking up four shotguns they bought because the 1992 LA Riots happened a month prior. I remember Rorian had a business card with G.R.A.P.L.E. which became G.S.T. he was teaching to the US military and Law Enforcement.
I remember seeing commercials for those early UFC and competing orgs. They always used the same clip of Don Frye and that Japanese fella pounding each other like they were in a hockey brawl. And every tape would have a fight of that absurdly large black guy who had a tendency to get walloped.
1.44mb per 3.5inch floppy disk, I'm showing my age lol. It was 12 or 13 floppy disks to install duke nukem 3d. I wonder what the math would be for floppy disks to install Witcher 3 lol.

Shortly later, I got in trouble with ROTC over a rebellious prank I played on the university. (I felt like I was being “bullied” by the Public Safety office, so I played that rebellious prank as my way of “standing up to the bully”). I had a long history of being bullied. Since I got in trouble, my mother blamed it on the “bad influence” of martial arts. Fun early UFC days fact.....Do you know that Royce Gracie wasn't the best Gracie fighter at the time of the early UFC? The family all will tell you that Rickson Gracie was a much tougher fighter but he was bigger than Royce, maybe 20 pounds, and looked more like a fighter, plus he would beat down opponents en route to submitting them. Rorion wanted to showcase how anyone can use Gracie JJ to defend themselves and how it is a superior form of JJ so they used the skinny, 170 pound Royce, who physically did not look like a fighter and only used strikes to set up submissions, if he used them at all. Rickson, on the other hand, didn't just beat you, he beat the hell out of you first. Watch Rickson Gracie fights, he destroyed guys. BTW, I trained for two years at The Gracie Academy under Royce's nephews Rener and Ryron. This was back when Rorion was there everyday and I spoke with him numerous times. A lot of people rag on Rorion but he was really nice and respectful to students then. This was 10-11 years ago. Brian Ortega was in our class too so I saw him when he was a skinny teenager. I only rolled with him once or twice. We all trained 3-4 times a week. Even at that age, he was developing a rep in class for his quick triangles.
MRBARBARYCOAST I have nothing but great things to say about my two years training with the Gracies. The Academy was all about respect and helping/teaching your fellow students. It wasn't the UFC mentality at all. Guys like that usually left after a week because no one got into the meat head mentality. You were respected for how much you helped others and humility. Your personal skill was no good unless you could pass it on to others. I really liked it.
